Okay, so I finished watching the anime a month ago because a friend recommended it to me, and we're thrilled with the series.We're planning to buy the Light Novel because we read somewhere that it's the original source. It would have been very easy for the story to make her insufferable, it would have been easy for her to be written as a cringe girlboss character or soapbox feminist.Instead, Maomao is a feminist character but mostly by means of unfairly having to limit herself because the society she lives in wouldn't allow her to speak openly. Even when she knows she is right, she has to concoct ways to approach important problems for a circular path because her lack of status means that she has no real rights or authority, and her lack of status is a direct result of her being a woman. Her internal monologue is hyper-aware of how she needs to phrase things in a specific way to protect herself from reprisal or punishment, and sometimes she gets worked up and her mask slips but its still something that she has to always remind herself of. She can't call Jinshi a creep and tell him to fuck off, she can only come up with excuses for she she needs to be elsewhere. She can never actually defend herself from malicious concubines, she can only imply that her closeness to some other people of station would make abusing her a bad idea. Etc. But the show doesn't ever have Maomao bemoan the unfairness of this situation to force a message on us, it simply presents us with an unfair situation and trusts that we are smart enough to recognize that its unfair.Which forms an interesting contrast to Jinshi, who is the exactly opposite. Jinshi has ALL of the status and power, and zero fucking awareness. When Maomao tells him that she was kidnapped and sold as a slave to the palace, Jinshi's response is sympathy, but also that there should have been more guards to stop criminals like that. Not that, say, the fact that they live in a society where women can be bought and sold is itself fucked up and the real problem. The kidnappers didn't write the laws or make selling women to the palace legal. The nobles did.

I read the manga before I saw the anime and honestly I liked the manga significantly more. Maybe the anime just had dull directing or poorer pacing, I dunno the anime just didn't vibe with me. I also found it easier to tolerate Jinshi in the manga than in the anime. Apparently the story goes deeper into focusing on Jinshi and Jinshi/Maomao which is kind of a shame because I didn't like him at all and because I'm primarily interested in the mysteries and not the romance.
