Most people throughout human history have been racist because in-group preference is a trait nature has bestowed upon complex living beings to maximize their survival. Rejecting our very nature is a sign of mental illness.
Was this part of the script or did some fansubbers take liberties with the dialog?

Most anime characters are racist. In anime you might find them casually pointing out that someone else isn't japanese. Many people in the west would consider that racist.
