Infinity Castle is officially the most successful anime movie in history

And everyone will forget it in a week.

You confuse "spam the board" with longevity. The generation that's going full nostalgia for this it's still growing.

KNY has no longevity. It can only "exist" when the anime is on air and when the anime is gone, it's forgotten.

It's funny how One Piece the best selling manga in history and Demon Slayer with record breaking movies seem to have no influence on any other manga. And One Piece is like what, almost 30 years old? And Demon Slayer manga ended 5 years ago?

Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, YYH and JoJos created new ways of writing shonen. OP and Demon Slayer didn't. They just made their authors rich I guess.
>>
>>282437935
Yeah it will be dead and forgotten this time for sure.
>>
>>282438915
Just give it a week. People will forget it about. It's like Avatar, looks pretty, makes a lot of money but not much else to say.
>>
>>282438825
Total cope lots of mangaka cite one piece as their favorite manga
How many years after Naruto and bleach came out did their "successors" take to come out? How long has it been since kimetsu's anime started?
Also mashle is hugely inspired by kny for just one example

>How many years after Naruto and bleach came out did their "successors" take to come out?
Naruto ended in 2014 and Bleach in 2016. BNHA started in 2014, Black Clover in 2015, Demon Slayer in 2016 and JJK in 2018. So Naruto only took 1 year to inspire after it ended and Bleach didn't take long after. One Piece is almost 30 and it inspired nothing.
>Also mashle is hugely inspired by kny for just one example
Mashle flopped and nobody cares about it.

Naruto when it ran had people theory crafting on YouTube and even to this day, people are still talking about Naruto, even if it's mainly just people seething about it as usual. No one talks about Demon Slayer besides "it looks nice and makes a lot of money."

>Still has not had a billion dollar film
>1/3rd of Inside Out 2's gross and 1/5th of Ne Zha 2's gross

Seriously why has anime failed so hard to get any mainstream appeal? Same with manga where One Piece is the best selling manga ever at about 550 million copies all-time but Donald Duck has certified sales of 250 million copies per year.
>>
>>282437935
It really makes me wonder how much the next movie will make, since Aniplex marketed it as the final battle, with posters worldwide headlining "The Final Battle Ignites" and no Part 1 tag anywhere in global campaigns like in Japan where it's titled "Chapter 1." I bet the Western audiences and a huge chunk of Asia who isn't Japan just walked in thinking they were getting the actual finale when the movie is just set up for the next. It's like Marvel releasing Avengers Infinity War but marketing it as Endgame to maximize profits.

A 2d, anime movie is going to pull 600 million international.

And pulling 100 million in america as a fucking foreign movie.
No matter how you cope, it's a league of its own.

>>
>>282443239
>A 2d, anime movie is going to pull 600 million international.
So literally nothing to Hollywood
That Superman Legacy movie made 600 million and it was underperforming
China still made 2 billion with a budget of 80 million so it made a bigger ROI and without needing America
>>
>>282443326
Lol you're mindbroken.
>>
>>282443326
>That Superman Legacy movie made 600 million and it was underperforming
So now you AGREE it underperformed?
And it underperformed, jeremy, because it needed 500 million to break even, you massive retard.
hell, it's #7 movie of the year (kimetsu is officially in the top ten, of a perfectly normal movie year with all blockbusters actually coming out)
Kimetsu is right now the #2 foreign movie in usa too, as a fucking 2d anime movie, but you don't count that kind of hurdles.
Seems like, in the end, it stood up to hollywood blockbusters pretty well, and made more money in profit than almost every movie released this year.
>>
>>282443326
>so it made a bigger ROI and without needing America
Actually... no?
2 billion/80 million = 25 ROI
555 million/20 million = 27 ROI
And it's still in cinemas, without needing to have the government force people to go watch it.
>>
>>282443368
Demon Slayer
>Gross 555 million
>Budget 20 million
>ROI: 27x
Nezha 2
>Gross: 2.229 billion
>Budget 80 million
>ROI: 27.8x
Nezha 2 not only made 4x the box office, it actually had a better ROI and did it without a big global release. China carried it alone
Nezha 2 and Battle at Lake Changjin don't need westerners while Demon Slayer depends on Japan running movies forever + Asia except China going Spirit Bomb + Sony marketing push, and still can't break 600 million
>>
>>282443461
I do not know who you're talking to and I don't give a shit

So what's with this massive explosion in mainsteam popularity for anime? My theory is that in 2004 or whatever there weren't a lot of people in their 30s watching anime. But the kids who watched anime back then are now adults with disposable income and that's why stuff like Demon Slayer and JJK is doing hundreds of million at the box office whereas a Bleach movie or whatever popular shounen 20 years ago would do like $10 million at best because the audience was largely still 13 year olds.
>>
>>282443847

While it's true that it is impressive, it still need to do more to create some ripple in the current movie industry.
BUT you can't rule out the fact it managed to attracted this much attention with little marketing, not being an original stand a lone film, AND it pretty much secured the success of the continuing triolgy.
/a/ tend to forget, Anime in general lack a lot of structural backbone and financial support, but accessibility and global cultural acceptance are something that other international industry can't have. No matter how much it get censored or pushed back by political force, there will always be another force that try to equalize it. People will consume anime no matter the risk and there is always a market for anime.
Hollywood and Disney can not copy anime format, the cultural gap is too big, they have tried grooming mangaka into drawing for capeshit, and it's not working. With the current momentum DS is going, the next movies will only raise the record higher.

It's shown there's a huge fanbase, that are really devoted and that it can be a success even for families despite the massive amount of deaths and somewhat adult content (gore, mentions of suicide).

That's why I say the ONLY anime franchise that can break into one billion and maybe go beyond that. The ONE anime franchise that can break every Japanese record in history... is Dragon Ball Z. As a full-on remake as a film series, with the best of the best Toei has to offer from Wano, Daima and Broly.

Pokémon films peaked in the 90s because of the Pokémania, but Pokémon movies are glorified commercials now.

Demon Slayer is big in Asia, but mostly niche in the West. Dragon Ball is a different beast, it's embedded into global pop culture. Latin America treats Goku like a folk hero, Europe (especially France, Spain) grew up on DBZ on TV and North America still sees DBZ as their anime gateway. No other anime franchise has that level of generational penetration across continents.

Demon Slayer arcs are all formulaic melodrama built for TV. DBZ arcs (Saiyan, Frieza, Cell, Buu) are literally structured like Hollywood blockbusters: escalating stakes, iconic villains, transformations, giant battles, payoffs. Each arc could be a self-contained 2.5-hour movie.

Also, Demon Slayer relies mostly on anime fans + Japan. DBZ cuts across Millennials and Gen Xers who grew up with DBZ on TV, Gen Z who know Goku through memes, games, Fortnite, and YouTube. We even have an entire generation discovering it through Super and Daima.

Dragon Ball is the ONLY anime with the bones to play in the billion-dollar sandbox like MCU. But Japan is shit tier when it comes to business.

Made all of its money on OW then made lesser each day. And if Demon Slayer could make that money in a dead month of September with zero competition while Super Hero could make almost $40M in America competing against Top Gun and Dr. Strange, then a Z remake can easily make double the money.

>Nobody does that, it's pointless
Nah. Box OfficeMojo, The Numbers, and industry analysts like Scott Mendelson and Erik Davis REGULARLY adjust box office for inflation. When Gone With the Wind is called the highest-grossing movie of all time, it's only because of inflation adjustment. Unadjusted, it's nowhere near the top.
>and americans are so poor nowadays a movie ticket is worth far more.
Nice contradiction. If tickets are worth far more, then comparing raw box office without adjustment is even less fair. Higher prices don't mean higher turnout. Inflation adjusted figures help gauge actual audience size and cultural reach.
>>282444797
>kimetsu is about to stand on top of usa's foreign box office
Factually wrong. It may beat the $128M of Crouching Tiger, but that's not what highest-grossing means in any meaningful historical context so Demon Slayer clears $225M in the US alone, it did not surpass Crouching Tiger.

Horseshit, it's had more influence on the 'dripfeed the reader/audience details about the big picture and present lurid ideas to them while leaving big gaps, and allow the audience to speculate on the future of the story to drive more fan attention to the series' school of writing in nipland than any of the other big boys, particularly because it's traditional peers were less 'big picture' focused. Basically, how people discuss the plot of OP in recent times is very finely tuned to what fans of series meant for young adults do, which is speculate about the plot and the implications of the trivia or, rather non-plot important details about characters and/or the setting) that's given to the audience.

>Not outside its home country
Wrong. Conjuring earned $248M overseas, in addition to $151M domestic. That's 62% of its total gross from non-domestic markets. Demon Slayer earned $228M in Japan (its home market) and $225M outside it. That's roughly 59% international. Almost identical in international balance, but Conjuring did it faster and without a frontloaded rollout.
>It did, in japan, where you so FERVENTLY said it would get destroyed by them.
Demon Slayer did hold its own in Japan... In its home turf. Doesn't mean Jurassic World underperformed, it means Toho scheduled Demon Slayer to drop first in Japan then slowly in Asia around August, smartly. The studio moved the release to September specifically to avoid direct combat with Superman and Jurassic World instead of simulcasting. Just strategic distribution 101. Demon Slayer had two full months of clear runway only competing in its home turf, just like a Marvel movie dodging Star Wars.

Anyway, Conjuring was a soulless piece of shit cash-in that dominated the global September box office without relying on a domestic mega-boost or release manipulation. $400M, the real winner of September box office war.

Pirating manga and anime is a institution by this point and the protocols of the elders of kyoto dictate that either you either tolerate it, losing vast sums of revenue in exchange for the possibility that overseas merch will contribute to your bottom line, or you get very defensive over your IP, which is unpopular both domestically and overseas. Genuinely, the last big anime film with a big budget release where all possible revenue was 'captured' in a way that a tech literate nerd couldn't just download a copy and/or get bootlegs worth watching was probably the first Pokemon movie, while the big domestic releases of the usual suspects (Doremon and Detective Conan, ect) are huge in Japan with limited appeal elsewhere.

It's a good, well written series that didn't take two decades to finish. What's not to like about it? The themes it explores are also very straightforward (honesty, friendship, loss, sacrifice, etc) and the author never tries to deconstruct or be edgy with her writing. It's the manga equivalent of The Three Musketeers or The Count of Monte Cristo, no wonder it's successful.

You niggers should be happy to witness this, it's an once in a lifetime event, no anime will ever be this successful, ever again.

Unironically I agree. In the time between the last season and this new movie, the series was practically forgotten (at least in the West). Demon Slayer seems to only exist while it's airing. That's why no one cared much about the manga before the anime started.

Western TV for all its fault still has way better writing.
>Watch Frieren after all the weeb and media hype
>It's literally just a cute girl doing cute things show
>Exact same copy-paste character archetypes in all modern slice of life anime
>Medieval Fantasy setting is completely inconsequential. Half the shit they do makes no sense for the setting and would actually fit more if the show was just set in modern Tokyo. Like the constant visiting of desert cafes.
>Once again an anime is hyped up to kingdom come, is a completely copy-paste job, with the exact same characters we've seen thousands of times before, same events and dialogue and plots we've seen a thousand times before, with a slightly interesting hook that isn't truly taken advantage of because the rest of the writing is so generic.
How in fuck does anime get hyped up well beyond it's actual quality? Even mainstream sites were acting like Frieren came from the heavens itself and it's just another generic as fuck copy-paste SoL anime with Isekai elements.
For all the faults of Western TV, especially how fucking pozzed it's become, if you compare the writing in Western shows to anime, even the most mediocre Western TV writing shits over pretty much everything in Weebshit.
Why does anime get this magic pass that Western television and animation don't? It seems that anime gets that exact same boost that Nintendo games do, where a 4/10 Nintendo game becomes a 8/10 simply in every review simply because Nintendo is on the name.
Like seriously, is there a comedy anime that even comes 1/100th as funny and as well written as the Simpsons or South Park? Fantasy anime that comes close to even GoT or HoD at it's worst? Dramas that comes 1/1000th as good as The Wire, Breaking Bad, Rome etc.
Yet people act like the absolute most boring as fuck, 2/10 anime that is literally just the same characters, plots, word for word writing we've seen a 1000 times before, is somehow better than anything the West puts out.

Rinse and repeat three or four times. That's the whole plot of Saint Seiya. Every arc after Sanctuary is just a repetition of the Twelve Houses. Demon Slayer is the same. It has the same rinse and repeat plot and every arc is a repetition of Mugen Train.

>the solution to every fight was speed instead of whatever each breathing had going on before and in spite of the one character whose breathing style is specifically about speed
>mc figures out the enemy's deal by remembering a conversation he had specifically about this kind of thing and then remembers that his dad had shown him an insane skill to specifically counter this kind of thing, which he somehow never thought about training before in his training arc, despite also searching for the secrets of his dad's breathing style
This movie was the most boring, shoddily written one I've seen in a while, hard-carried by the animation alone and even that started to wear off when I realized it be mainly about fighting ONE guy, who they fought before in the other one, so it was all just dragged out spamming the same attacks over and over and over again without any sense.

Anime production is becoming more and more quality oriented, and I'm wondering if bigger hit like this will affect Kadokawa's “quantity over quality” strategy. They have decent LN sources, but many of them get terrible anime adaptations or don't get a 2nd season even though getting popular. Kadokawa alone producing over 100 shows a year, human resources are severely stretched thin.

Except if you just talk about the original 1994 movie, then it made over $700 million dollars and if you adjust that to 2025 dollars, that's $1.6 billion dollars today. So Lion King is forever the undisputed king of 2D animation

Maybe 20 years ago but modern western media is so fucking awful it's one of the big reason's anime(specific ones at least) have blown up in the west.

Forgot to add, if you also adjust inflation, Spirited Away looks FAR MORE impressive. Spirited Away made $396M in 2001 and if we inflation adjust that into 2025 money, it's $675M.

Because it does exactly what millions of other mediocre anime have already done. It's like if Taylor Swift became a musical phenomenon.

Oh wait.
>>
>>282453452
Why are you so obsessed with Taylor Swift, Jeremy?
>>
Now that anime is officially popular and mainstream, I fully expect all you contrarians to leave this place and never return.
>>
>>282453215
Because most people who watch anime are invested in slow paced seasonal romcom and slice of life series that never hope to approach the numbers of this movie.
That's 40 years of rom com and slice of life getting annihilated

>Monster
Nobody gives a damn about that series. People only mention in when they want to appear like cultured anime enthusiasts.

>>282454460
The manga ended years ago. It's hard to discuss exactly the same things over and over again. Many former anime only fans already picked up the manga, and those who didn't, casually discuss stuff here and there. It's bizarre to expect complex discussions on a daily basis at this point. That's why Kimetsu threads about this movie are dominated by people praising it as an anime adaptation, or mentioning box office results.

I still saw people cosplayin to watch Infinity Castle on weekend 2 when anime movies are supposed to be dying. Yet IC is still collecting millies.

See, it doesn't count if it doesn't tickle your discussion quorum feelings, no matter if people who read manga then watch anime or even then watch movies. Imagine fucking that for a movie that broke past a billion dollars in theaters and could get a China release.
