Whatever happened to deep anime? You know, the kind like Lain, Evangelion, Monster, Ergo Proxy, etc. It seems most anime nowadays is just isekai or shonen bullshit rather than shows that make you think. Feels like the last one like that was Shinsekai Yori
>>282446016Same as Hollywood.Too much risk for not enough return and depends on people with actual talent while for slop anyone can do.
>>282446016I don't know. The anime fandom is weird. They dislike when stories are about things. It's the only medium where putting in effort like that is actively hated.
Wonder Egg Priority came out a couple years ago and you hated it.
>>282446016Did you watch Heikemonogatari?
>>282446145redditors would eat up any 2deep4u slop though
>>282446016>boohoo my cartoons for children are not deep enough
>>282446683Those anime I mentioned were deep though
>>282446369They kinda fucked it up though near the end desuIt had potential. But there were some clear problems.
>>282446016Watch flowers of evil. Rotorscoped so reviews are bad, but the content is gold.
Last time they tried to be deep nobody watched, people only want escapism cuz the world sucks too much right now
Didn't Konaka recently say Despera is still happening?
>Shinsekai Yori>deep
>>282446016The industry mostly panders for retarded zoomer audience now. Under Ninja was good you should try it. Sonny Boy was okay.
>>282446016No one has the talent or money for it anymore.
>>282446932Not bad but it's over 10 years old at this point
>>282446016I know it's not the same but try soloprojects, Japanese boy who draws and ongaku are very good.
>>282448188ongaku is very good. i still think about the final rotoscoped scene.
"""subtle""" req thread
pseud thread
Once you grow up you'll understand
>>282446016Watch more anime
>>282446932Read the manga instead
>>282446016The people who made Lain fucked up and didn't captalize on it's success and popularity. Wasted potential to make tons of money. They just let all the hype die down.
>>282446016It seems today, that all you see, is isekai and shonen, and /a/ on /tv/
>>282446016People would rather watch isekai #9821421
PLEASANT DAY PLEASANT TIME HAHAHAHA
>>282448908Was it even popular when it aired? also thank god they didn't make it le franchiseslop
>>282446016Talented people went into game development.
>>282446016The new trend for intellectuals is to think of ways you could spin anything as deep. It's too easy to look at your NGE and say that's deep. It needs no braincells. How can I make some isekai like Re:Zero sound deep? It needs 20+ braincells. Your entire brain has to do multithreading to manage. Now that's intellectual.
>>282448908It's so sad the creators didn't milk Lain to death like this.
>>282446016>Lain, Evangelion, Monster, Ergo Proxy, etc. It's all pretentious crap
>>282446016>Lain, Evangelion, Monster, Ergo Proxy, all shit, isekai is better
>>282446016Watch The Tatami Time Machine Blues.
>>282447926Yes, but it will be released in 2027.
>>282448596This. Anime adapts almost nothing.
>>282451176I doubt I'll get an answer but. What is your favorite anime and what do you think is truly intellectual? What makes these pretentious?
>>282451722Why even engage with the retards that call everything "pseud" or "pretentious".Imagine such a person's psychology to click reply in this thread and type that.
>>282451822The seething of these people is so unreasonable it's hard for me to comprehend, so I was intrested for some insight. But yeah you're probably right anon.
>deep anime
>>282452051What's the problem?
>>282446016You act like this ever was common yet the 4 examples you mention are over 10 years apart. It never was common, you simply didn't watch anime back then. Also if you don't like modern anime then why watch it? They could stop making anime today and there'd be enough anime for me to watch for the rest of my life. Post the last 10 anime you watched so I can laugh.
>>282446016They just don't make enough money.
>>282452111Lain came 1 year after EOE and there's a shit ton of anime like these from 95 to the mid 00s.
>>282446016The more money gets poured into the industry, the more everybody will stick to a formula that works. Experimentation and risk have a cost and there is a point where the oportunity cost becomes too great.
>>282452111Not OP but I mostly agree with him. Here's 5 I recently watched.>Witch Hunter Robin>You're Under Arrest! (OVA)>Letter to Momo>Owarimonogatari>Takopii no GenzaiNow post yours.
>>282446016>"deep" animeThey insisted upon themselves.
>>282451176Yeah, they try so ridiculously hard to appear deep that they end up being a deranged comedy in the end. I just can't take them seriously.
>>282451722>I doubt I'll get an answer but. What is your favorite animeMF Ghost>and what do you think is truly intellectual?u mean, in anime?>What makes these pretentious?the "pretentious" stuff act deep but it's mostly edgy shit. they put in some bible names, random freud crap, edgy atmosphere, then let the 16-year-old audience feel like nietzsche because they watched a cartoon with muted colors and bible names. it's the anime equivalent of writing your school essay in purple prose so the teacher thinks you are smart.
There were several 2deep4u anime recently though
>>282453736Pic related?
>>282446016foreign audience too important, translation destroys nuancewhy put in more work just to make weird nonsense?power fantasy and coom make money
>>282446918>They kinda fucked it up though near the end desuThat they did. Still, the episodic, MOTW parts dealing with teenage girl trauma were pretty good.
>>282446016Define what makes something "deep".Something like ashiterizu baby can be considered deep.>>282450481No, it wasnt but give it some slack because the anime boom at the time kinda buried it and other thematic shows for more marketable stuff.
>>282446094this>>282446369also this, /a/ got thoroughly filtered by wep especially the ending / extra episode
>>282446016People realized the "literally me" sad characters aren't deep. People were seeking relatability but realized everyone is sad so it's nothing special. Also, they realized shock value isn't deep, either. Both relatability and shock value only works the first few times and fails once you've consumed enough media to see enough of it.
>>282453644This reads as if you've only seen Evangelion, and just assumed all the other ones were the same.
>>282451722Ergo Proxy in particular stuck me as pseudo-deep though you asked other anon and I tend to give the genre a benefit of the doubt. Somebody namedrops "cogito ergo sum" and the show expects me to think it's deep because of the aesthetic or namedrop w.e. It feels shallow. Forced deep.
>>282453742Yeah, Rick and morty and Kowloon
>>282446016Because it's inflexible. The thought-provoking kind of stuff tends to be one-and-done. Every time one of them is released it takes up a certain space in history, especially when its audience intersects even across time or media. Once this conceptual "space" is taken, anything that comes too close to it is instantly considered plagiarism or a "cheap rip-off". A notable example from the /tv/ medium is Matrix and Equilibrium. Equilibrium was a great movie but it got shit on by critics and a large chunk of the public as a "matrix rip-off" because both are dystopian in nature, both have edgy&cool trenchcoats and both have gun-kata. No actual criticism of substance, just "it's bad because... I say it is a rip-off, so it just is, OK?!"More flexible things like isekai also get treated like that, but the big difference is that with inflexible things it's just a 1:1 comparison that is already enough to dismiss something that's not the very first of its kind instantly, while with more flexible things you need to accumulate bad examples, or at least have enough sample size to gaslight the public into believing that the proof is "right around the corner" in the next example you just didn't happen to see yourself yet.
>>282451053No FMA 2003 or Paranoia Agent?
>>282451822Your defensive reply proves that pic right, honestly. And for the record, people like you do say shit like that, and you're never able to properly articulate why or how a piece of media is "deep" or not. You turn your nose up at more simple stories, and act as if you're more intelligent because you watched something others call "deep".
>it's "deep" because it criticized religion, capitalism, or otherwise made basic observations about philosophy and the human condition
>>282455210>it's deep because there's something underneath the surface level of the presented storyYeah that's kind of the definition.
>>282455299By that definition, most shounen are deep.
