Ghibli characters are generally average weak vulnerable people. Even a character like Howl is a bit of a neurotic loser. But that's the leverage that makes the stories more affecting. Ghibli stories are often more "human" feeling than average especially for anime. Because critically it's not like typical isekai where the MC is boring but gets their whole life magically fixed just by going to another world.
