If a new Revue Starlight series came out today, would /a/ care?
a new anime? sure. i saw someone translated some official manga chapter recently but it's about one of the junior high branches. even if the art's incredible i just can't give a fuck about that.if it's not anime it has to be the same characters.if it's new characters it has to be animated.
>>282492159Sorry, couldn't resist.
Give me love cobra. Ready for something new.Revues have moved to the next stage.
FURUKAWA WHERE ARE YOU
>>282492504Instead of fleshing out other schools like the manga and stage plays did, what about a brand new series with a totally new school and cast? It could still be an "other school" story but keep the same 8-9 character format. And we still don’t know what Love Cobra is about.
>>282492159I know I'd be hyped
>>282492159Probably, Princession Orchestra threads seem to be doing fine
>>282493537sure whatever, that still fits the recipe of what i think could be good. if singing and dancing and cute girls in lethal melee are important to the series it has to be animated. the performances of the actresses is what allows the series to be compelling in other forms. whatever bushiroad is still trying to push for the series at this point is so far diluted from the original anime it's nearly impossible to care about it. i don't care about karen's dog's girlfriend who goes to junior high school in germany.
Hikari drags this show down from being a 10/10I hate how Hikari is obviously a Homura expy to the point of having zero personality in a colorful castI hate how Karen was basically reduced to nothing but a Hikari simpI hate how she just ditched Mahiru like it's nothing and nobody called her out for itI hate how cuck-y Mahiru feels as a characterI hate how Nana lost to Hikari when thematically she should've won
>>282492159I got scammed and I started to watch it. Now on ep 11. If the movie isn't life changing i'm suing
This story doesn't need a sequel
>>282494380No problem then, the movie is that good.
>>282494699did you just spoil me? fuck you
>>282494814That's just fanart silly
>>282492159I would like you have no idea
good series overall but its insane how hard the movie carries it all.
>>282492159I'll care regardless but I'll care much more if it's about the Siegfeld juniors. I love them and their story so far and think they have a lot of potential that would make an expansion of that interesting, but other than the stage plays (which were great) they haven't committed to a longer independent story like Seisho.I love Seisho but the movie and Pride MV satisfied me with too much substance and catharsis to enjoy stuff like El Dorado as much as I shouldI know some people would prefer some of the other side-schools to get focus instead of Siegfeld juniors but there's at least one character I don't care about in Rinmeikan/Frontier and I like everyone in Siegfeld/Seiran so it's clear where the line is drawn
Revue is a show that is trying too hard and is style over substance.Still got me to watch it and the movie, though. Didn't like the story much but it looked great and the girls were hot.
>>282495831I mean that’s the show’s selling point. It’s spectacle over writing. They did it so well I legit haven’t found a battle shounen that tops Revue of Pride episode 3 or the final scene in Revue of Star Gatherer episode 12. They get what spectacle means and drive it home, while other action shows just throw sakuga around without actual "spectacle". Dandadan, JJK, Mob Psycho are just sakuga fests to me.
>>282495320I love the series, esp ep 3, 7, 8 and 12.
>>282494279>Hikari is obviously a Homura expyWatch the OVA. And theres a few cute scenes of her with Karen>Karen was basically reduced to nothing but a Hikari simpThe movie literally fixed that. Karen has real struggle like your average teen>she just ditched Mahiru like it's nothingI agree, but Mahiru's pair is in another school. Cliche i know>cuck-y MahiruBro she gained a lot of growth over the series and become oneesan-tier. And watch the movie.>Nana lost to Hikari when thematicallyI have nothing to say since the plot needed it to turn out that way.
>>282492159I would be curious but also highly skeptical that it would be worthwhile. The film closed the circle on everything Revue Starlight (at least in terms of anime installments) was trying to tell and accomplish with its highly meta/diagetic narrative and any further followups on that would feel pointless. The best possible result if they decided to make another Revue Starlight anime would be a lesser rehash of what the first anime + Rondo + Gekijouban together did.
>>282494279>I hate how cuck-y Mahiru feels as a charactergrow up
>>282497649The question is, what theme will they go with in a newer anime? Then again, RevStar’s theme isn’t all that new to begin with. Wanting to shine is pretty much your classic Takarazuka trope, like in RoV.
>>282498981The theme of wanting to shine as top star was just the surface level theme, though the TV anime only slightly set up the layers beyond that while the films are what really elaborated on those deeper layers to the point that the surface level theme took a back seat in the last film. I guess newer anime can go with a slightly different surface level theme but at best would weakly repeat the deeper meta themes of storytelling/where the stage ends and the "real" world begins/etc.
It's been a year since ReLive ended.
>>282492569When are we getting Used Cars the anime, but with QT3.14 anime waifus selling cars?
>>282492159I would!
>>282501233damn already huhI remember sorta getting into some of the stories that the other school characters had but ultimately I hated the flat sprite shuffling visual limitations a lot more for this than for other gacha of anime I liked, and despite liking some stories here and there the content overall felt like pointless additions that didn't add on to the anime experience at all
>>282504267I like the Arcana Arcadia story, and I like these two, a pompous dork being topped by a midget.
>>282495831>style over substanceWhen people say this it's basically a compliment to a show. The core of the story is simple, just being about the inner struggles of the girls, but when combined with the presentation it is amazing.
>>282504267I was turned off from ReLive after it started because I was playing for Seisho and didn't like how they were depicted, but after a while I accepted that Seisho is kind of shallow in this game and enjoyed the other schools insteadWish the archives didn't break, there were a lot of good stories I never finished
>catching a revue thread outside of rewatch weekrarealso still no news
>>282504858>no newshttps://x.com/syasendou/status/1968989116030210507The scriptwriter of Love Cobra vagueposted about Love Cobra a couple days ago, so it's coming out soon for sure this time. Within the week I bet.If you mean actual Revue news there was the Sieglet live show and a few audio dramas I guess.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1dk2A8YMCUEven though this is obviously just hastily slapped together ReLIVE assets I almost prefer it to the Live2D. Some nicer art with more subdued poses and different expressions and it would look serviceable
>>282504382I had started watching it with hope that it would be a big improvement over the story that came before but I just couldn't stay interested with the extremely limited visuals, especially when it comes to Revue the visual presentation is super important and if anything the attempt to tell a better more dramatic and more Revue-like story only emphasized the problem even more. >>282504541Honestly my favorite parts of ReLive really were just a couple of the more SoL-y stories where the visuals didn't impede the experience nearly as much. The only time I felt like ReLive did an okay job with a more dramatic story was when the RMK butais fought (and failed) to keep their department. And yeah I have to agree that ReLive Seisho are just cardboard cutouts of their anime selves, it's jarring to think about that vs how they absolutely blossomed in the film
>>282505016Thanks for sharing these!>After this, I might not be able to write any more love storiesoh no

>>282492159Only the movie was good
>>282509146The vn was good too
>>282509192This really is an underrated franchise I didn't know there was a VN or a game or a series I just loved the movie and found out after
The world needs more anime about cute dorky girls fighting with swords
>>282509268the "curse" of revue starlight as a franchise is that so much of the material is centered around the stage plays, and if you're not a fan of live action, then you simply have to suffer knowing that it's practically ended(I find them very compelling personally though)
>>282492159>watched it months ago>haven't gotten around watching the movieOne of these days...
>>282509386Anon...
Haven't seen the movie yet. But the banana episode stuck with me and I still think about it to this day despite thinking the anime overall was just okay. Best ed in years though
>>282492159I'd be a little interested, though you really can't go anywhere new with the current cast
>>282509449it is quite funny how iconic Fly Me to the Stars is as an Ending Song(at least in comparison to how relatively niche Revue Starlight is), enough so that it's like the de facto yuri shipping song. The entire downward scrawl while the song plays is just absolutely gorgeous. I love it so much that I have a framed poster of it in my room
>>282509417>>282509446I was saving it for when I finally quit my job and had more free time but LOL, LMAO even.
>>282494380I personally loved the series, but the movie is on a whole other level.>>282509551Same
>>282509551I'll have to give it a rewatch. I kinda forgot how many years its been since it aired so maybe I'll be more favorable towards it. And finally watch the movie
>>282509551Same. I've watched and re-watched the anime and movie so many times, I played the game for years, I enjoyed the VN, and I even still have the "call to the stage" ringtone as the ringtone on my phone.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq-si4DUEVo
>>282509831different anon, but personally for me, the anime series is a 7/10 show with two 10/10 episodes and a fucking amazing 11/10 movie. The 7/10 isn't derogatory though, it's just that the overall series has its weak points, especially when it comes to being efficient with screentime (I adore their seiyuu, but Kaoruko and Futaba in the series kinda just did nothing).
>>282509511It’s also a great supplementary song for couples who don’t get enough time together, like Banana Junna. But my favorite is the Karen-chan version. The visuals focus on Karen alone, while the song is sung by the whole Kukugumi cast minus Karen and Hikari. It’s not the song itself that left an impression on me, but its thematic weight and the way it showed Karen stepping up to confront Hikari head on. At the end of episode 11 she says, “...Aijou Karen, Hairimasu” with determination.
>>282509906>Kaoruko and Futaba in the series kinda just did nothingThey had the second best revue song in the show, not to mention the movie, plus I love their version of the ED.They really compliment each other's voices perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzV6yucF4pU
Rewatching the show after getting in a relationship made me appreciate FutaKao more and they're easily my favs now especially FutabaMy gf fucking hates Futaba though
>>282509551I tried the show out of curiosity and wasn't even a yurifag then. I knew nothing about the fights or the underground stuff. It's one of the legit shows I watched blind. This is my take from my first watchthrough, so don't crucify me. I wasn't focusing much on the first half of Episode 1, and the freaking second half came out of nowhere and blew my mind in the best way. Like, what is this fantastic song, why is this character dancing while fighting, and so on. Then the transformation scene happened, the bass boost/drop, and I knew I was locked into the franchise for good.I've watched the series and movies a million times, completed the VN, and seen all the stage shows. The only thing missing was Re Live, but I only started watching the show right after the game ended.
>Junna-chan kys
Am I the only one who hears "shiawase ga oshikko" here?
Did you know? Kaoruko is a snarky, sarcastic asshole, not because she can but because she's the youngest in the 99gumi cast. She gives off youngest child energy. She's literally a brat.
You know when I first watched this I thought the anime was pretty good. Then I watched the movie and that was genuinely the greatest anime movie I've ever seen. I cannot stop thinking about it. Everything about that movie was a 10/10 every single song went on my phone.
>>282512163Which one's your favorite song from tthe movie? I still sing Utsukushii Hito Arui wa Sore wa in the car from time to time
>>282512317It's definitely a tie between that and Wagamama highway. It's just sounds so incredible. Fuck Super star spectacle is kind of godlike too I can't possibly choose.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiKjdgHhXH4Talking about revue songs, for me it's Starlight, especially its second half. It somehow managed to capture the feeling of pure hope breaking through every kind of bullshit life throws at you.I always listen to it whenever I'm in a rough patch in my life, i just love it so much
>>282512317nta but I really love MEDALSUZDALPANIC
>>282509831>>282509386I really envy you anons. What I would do to watch the movie for the first time again. It's easily my most rewatched piece of media, I've watched it dozens of times.
>>282512815I started watching Revue Starlight because I stumbled upon the OP on youtube one day and it hooked me. Before that the only things I knew about RS besides the fact that it exists is that one of the girls are evil and Karen's transformation sequence. The first 2 episodes were okay then in episode 3 when YORI TAKAKU YORI KAGAYAKU dropped I instantly knew that I struck gold with this series.
Only OGs would know who Judy Knightley is.She was also voiced in the VN by a former Takarazuka actress. How cool is that?
Where to get/watch the stage play? and which ones should I watch?
Prince Mahiru is iconic
>>282514743>good onesEverything with Akira (Blue Glitter, Edel Delight), everything with Seiran (Live #2, Blue Glitter, Live #4. Baby Blue is iffy), everything with Siegfeld juniors (Edel Delight, Regalia, Rebellion, Remains, Rerise).Seisho is not bad but 2 and 4 are the best because they have more Akira and Hisame, the best characters.Just watch them all in order though.
>>282516562#3 Growth was quite good in my opinion. I forgot which stage live had them fighting each other, but Maya's part was the most epic.
>>282512027>youngest brat with a :3 face voiced by Itou Ayasait keeps happening

>>282510349>those subsIt's REBORN, dammit!Sai (再: again, twice, second time)sei (生: life, genuine, birth)san (さん: neutral suffix for "perso- WAIT. HOLD ON.)>再生産>Reproduction (economics)>Reproduction can also refer to the worker's daily reproduction of his own labor power. This consists of the tasks of everyday existence — food preparation, laundry and so forth — that maintain him and his ability to show up at his job as required. >that industrial imagery in the transformation sequence>that food imagery in the movie>the laundry scene in the OVA>that scene where they pass on their writing process and the implicit division of labor between backstage and the actors to the next generation but also warn them about the resulting anxieties and sense of incompleteness>they reproduce the conditions that created them, if you will>to graduate: to move on to the next stage of life, using the previous stage as fuel>Nana: "I feel like I just drank a strong sake" (allegedly the first thing the Buddha said after being enlightened)>said as she graduates from her writing role into acting in a meta role, which allows Junna to graduate in the above sense>that same metaphor arguably works for every other pairingHoly FUCK.How am I still learning new things about this cartoon after so many rewatches?Maybe it finally clicked because I just drank a strong sake.
>>282519807This is from the first episode, maybe thats why the subs is shit. I genuinely remember in other transformation scenes it says Reborn.Doesnt matter, Saiseisan is the word
>>282519883Different groups sub it as "reborn" or "remade".There's been ongoing discussion among fans about which is the correct translation, but it just finally clicked for me why it's even possible to disagree at all and why no one translation could ever capture the intended meaning.
>>282519202Hmm, seems like a tough topic to tackle. The core concept of performing on stage is one person hogging the spotlight while the other actors act as foils to make that person shine. To "share the spotlight" often ends up making everyone dimmer. Even your standard idol group has a foil.
>>282498981The rekindling of faded passion as rebirth is Sieglets' whole thing with the extinct animal and clock vibe.Destruction of self vs. growth and realization of self as methods to evolve art is also kind of Siegfeld + Arcana Arcadia + movie Mayakuro but I like it every time
>>282519947I kinda get where the confusion comes from. Ignore the 再 in 再生産 for a sec. 生産 just means production. Production is a broad term, and if you focus on the mechanical imagery in the Karen Saiseisan scene it leans toward 製造, meaning manufacturing. In the Revue Starlight world, 生産 implies producing everything, from the stage itself to every part of the performance. So Produce = Manufacture = Make feel like fair translations.Remade works in the sense of building the stage again so it doesn’t sound awkward.Reborn suggests Karen or the Stage Girls being reborn over and over on stage. That’s probably the most accurate thematically, but it loses the broader nuance of production. Produce = Manufacture ≠ Born.Reproduce is the literal 1-1 translation of 再生産, but in English it gives off a totally different meaning. IMO I prefer Reborn because it captures the Stage Girls context better.
>>282520871I've seen 再生 being translated as Renaissance (can't find the source right now), which just adds to the confusion."Reborn" definitely works better in English because the associations that invokes in a typical English speaker capture more of the meaning as it was probably intended, but it's a shame how that erases the mechanical/industrial ties with the visuals and the cyclical associations (compare: Nietzsche's eternal recurrence), which were probably intentional considering Nana's whole arc.I still prefer "reborn" for its emotional content, but I finally understand why everyone on both sides feels so strongly about this.
>>282515797Is it good?
>>282522049Link it. I need more Cow.
>>282521410The "Reborn" vs "Remade" debate kinda comes down to abstract vs concrete.Reborn fits the Stage Girls' theme and concept, so it reads as abstract.Remade highlights the physical act/aspect of rebuilding the stage, so it reads as concrete.Saiseisan captures both abstract and concrete.
>>282522713Ain’t no fucking way, utterly unbeknownst to me.
>>282522632>abstract vs concrete.I think the real debate is about what different viewers perceive as abstract or concrete.Personally, I experience narrative themes as more concrete than physical/visual motifs (hence "reborn" over "remade"), but I can easily imagine it's the other way around for many people.
>>282522713It's amazing how well their voices work together.
>>282522713I love Ito Ayasa's voice
>>282522713Didn't they also cover each other's songs? I mean like Maya singing Futaba/Kaoruko song for example. I forgot where I saw that.
Does anyone have that fanart of short hair Mahiru with Suzu?
>>282522713I like how Maya's chorus has a commanding tone like "Do you see the gap between us?" while Kaoruko has a more "Admit that I am better, you WILL praise me" tone
>>282524098Hmm, I’m not sure if it was from a live concert or if I’m just having a Mandela effect, but I remember the characters swapping songs. The link you shared with me is fantastic though.

Sorry if this turns into too much of a /v/ talk, but for those who played the El Dorado VN, which route/pair is your favorite? Mine’s Nana and Mahiru, mostly because I’m a Mahiru-oshi.

>>282531636Yes please
>>282527045I kinda wonder the same but also have a feeling I already know the answer based on ReLive. I just don't think any of this stuff works very well without the grand sweeping visuals unique to the anime, very ironically even the actual stageplays themselves kinda have this issue too IMO
>>282533108>>282531636you couldn't afford it
>>282527045It's about the same quality as one of the upper-end ReLIVE stories but Seisho is written competently this time. It's not bad but I think the art is kind of weak. Majority seems to enjoy it though, but for its price I'd have rather just bought another stageplay stream ticket
>>282529227no bully
>>282527045It’s good, and it wowed me a few times. I wouldn’t call it anime level good since the VN leans on different strengths. It’s made for people who already love the characters and want to see them fleshed out more. Instead of the usual revue tournament, it takes a unique approach by having the girls perform in the El Dorado play. So the VN is more about being impressed by their acting than the spectacle you get in the 12 episode series and the movie.
>>282538380Can I appreciate it without having played the mobile game at all?
>>282538905I never played the mobile game, so I’d say yes. The VN doesn’t mention any other schools, and some of its plot points are tied directly to the 12 episode series. It works like a sequel to the series, filling the gap between the series and the movie. The movie’s timeline is a little confusing though, since it shows them performing El Dorado and then the credits roll with them moving on to the next stage aka graduating from Seisho.Like in my pic here from the movie, you can see the girls practicing the El Dorado play and even saying the exact lines from it. So I think it’s fair to assume the VN picks up somewhere around there.
>>282539240Alright sounds good enough for me. It's like 20 bucks anyway.
Not gonna lie, I thought Love Cobra was dead, but then I checked the director’s page and he’s still tweeting about it. Kinda comforting to know it’s still in development after all these years.
This is pure speculation with no proof, just me noticing patterns from other anime that went through late development. It could be a few different things. Girls Band Cry was already in development before Bocchi and MyGO, but somehow both of those aired first. A lot of that came down to delays in the hiring process due to COVID. Love Cobra might be going through the same thing. The talent hiring process could be slowing things down, and my gut says it’s shaping up to be another big franchise like Revue Starlight. Not just a "new series", but a full multimedia project with stage plays and all that.
>>282524979For me, it's Junna and Karen. They're just too cute together, and them going to the sea together was just my favorite scene

>>282546685>and her cheerful personality kinda reminds me of Karen.Ah I see. From her design I thought she'd be a cool but autistic type but this is nice tooThanks anon

I don't remember the actual quote or the source though so just trust me on this unconditionallyI feel like that's what most people felt, she doesn't really have flaws unlike the rest of the cast until the movie (being stupid is not a flaw), and saying "well actually she was just trying really hard to hide them" in the movie feels almost like a retcon but I don't really care because it fixed everything and made it interestingEither way, if they never fixed Karen or Hikari, the latter would still be worse because proto Karen is still prettier and cooler.

I really wish this series fully committed to the Broadway musical elements instead of reducing all of the songs to background insert songs. What a wasted opportunity to have an anime Broadway musical. Singing one line of the song before going back to talking just wasn't it man.
>>282516562Akira is indeed the best, cool and composed with great talent to back it up unless a certain blonde is involved. It's funny that I first come across her through the game and didn't like her, but watching Blue Glitter it's immediately apparent how great she is, and it keeps getting better. >>282555411Watch the stageplays if you don't mind it, they leave much more importance to songs as story elements. #1 is kinda close in theme to the anime but as the stageplays progresses it turns quite different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJX6etN5K70
>>282555411Yeah same here. I adore this series but it really feels every scene with an insert song would've been greatly elevated if the song was deeper integrated into it.My biggest example of this is Revue of Malice with Wagamama Highway. The lyrics of the song itself is already a dialogue between Kaoruko and Futaba, at that point just go all the way and have them sing it out directly.

>>282561744NTA but that's a tough question. Symphogear has great songs and they always pull off flawless OP song drops. But the Revue movie is jaw dropping good. So imo I would rank them Revue Movie>Symphogear>Revue series.
>>282555411>Singing one line of the song before going back to talking just wasn't it manThere was this one episode of Healer Girl that had the first segment of the episode, before the opening song, that was entirely sang-through. I was pissed when it turned out they weren't going to commit to the bit and instead just defaulted to dialogue again after the OP song
I would like a quasi-sequel series with a new cast.
>>282563875Healer Girl had a whole episode they sang all the way through, the sports festival one.
>>282563897How can she be so cute?
>>282565485We may never know
>>282494279>I hate how Karen was basically reduced to nothing but a Hikari simpIt's the reason I love the movie so fucking much. It acknowledges this and actually makes Karen a her own character in a really satisfying way.
>>282494380>Finish the show>Think it's alright>Had astronomically high expectations for the movie because I have not heard a single bad thing about it> Get worried as I'm watching it because it wasn't as good as I was expecting>Get to the last 20 minutes of the movie>I just watched the anime of the decadeI died and came back to life because of this movie.

>>282560904Anon, don't tell me that you're even shorter than Akira's VA here?
>>282576761It's always great to see another anon be exposed to the sheer beauty of Super Star Spectacle. There's an annual rewatch that happens every June where we all watch the show and movie together, be sure to join us next year.
>>282576761The moment Revue of Souls begin I start ascending further and further until credits roll. Just chills every time.
>>282505016Love Cobra is alive, therefore, I am.
>>282577924It's just so perfect. Like it genuinely WAS a Super Star Spectacle. Literally no other way I could possibly describe it. The best anime movie I have ever seen in my entire life. I try and convince any of my friends to watch revue just so I have an excuse to re watch the movie with. I already got one of them and he loved it.
The director of this work was a disciple of Ikuhara.Ikuhara directed Utena.Their style "blends reality and fantasy". I like this style. It's just difficult to understand.I hope a successor to this work will emerge.
