I just got done watching Bake after reading the Bake LNs after all this time, so I'm gonna ramble on my thoughts for a bit. (I read and watched both of them raw just in case someone asks me for whatever translation I used.)In short, I really loved it as it's own unique thing, Shaft's style is over-powering and they very expertly took Bake's story and adapted in an extremely visual, fun way, giving it their own spin and flavour, but I do find myself preferring the book over the anime (which isn't saying a lot, I adore the LN and the anime is a masterpiece.), the anime is a much faster paced, more plot driven, visual masterpiece in a very pretty, but lonely, open world whereas the LN is a lot slower, has a lot more just pointless banter (my favourite part of the series) and takes place in the inaka which gives it a comfier vibe. There are some changes here and there that I both love and hate but I think the most impressive part is how much they kept the characters and plot true to form, while completely changing the setting and atmosphere, turning it into it's own work while still being a perfect adaptation. Seeing stuff like the first date, the Rainy Devil fight done in such a way was sort of mindblowing. I also felt a lot of Mononoke inspiration, maybe just on my brain because Sakurai voiced youkai/kaii/mononoke guy.I'm gonna read Kizu next, and then watch the adaptation after that.

The only downside I'd say is they make it slightly less avant-garde in subsequent adaptations. I assume partially because Bake was them trying to discover what direction they wanted, a deliberate highlight of all of the different stories within Bake, and because they didn't want it to be overbearing. Kizu was somewhat similar but that is because it was a callback to Bake (plus Shaft doesn't hold back for movies). Don't get me wrong, it is all still pretty good in this regard, just slightly less crazy. Fortunately though, with the latest adaptations they've started to try to get weirder again. There was even a statement where it was sort of said that since they came back after a 5 year gap they were trying to be safe so that the next stuff may be even crazier. I have a feeling that this could lead to them making stuff that manages to get even more weird and surreal than some of the artistic gags and quirks in Bake. This is a good series (and studio) to be a fan of, the gift that keeps on giving.

The character that got it worst was probably Hachikuji which is a shame because she's my favourite, but she's the easiest to cut/hardest to adapt because so much of her is just boke/tsukkoming it up with Arararararagi and a ton of her great dialogue got cut.

If you watch Koyomi Vamp you miss most of Hanekawa's scenes which were cut due to being less consequential to the greater story while being super long. She immediately is introduced and becomes Araragi's girlfriend and eventual wife. This differs it a lot from most harems as now you don't have the same old competition thing they all do, you already have the winner. This ironically allows the other relationships to be developed deeper too, as they can be more centered on the specific girls. Araragi also is in a rather unique position as he has his bond with Shinobu. This allows there to be another romantic plotline, but it doesn't feel like the generic "and he married them all" ending some harems that feel more daring do, it is a truly unique situation and doesn't feel contrived. He also gets up to regular antics with the other girls due to the characters' different quirks. While it might not be as romantic, it still provides a lot of the variety girl content that harems are mainly popular for. Each girl is also a lot more unique than the quota filling usual harem. There is no fear of allowing them to overlap in some traits where it is natural and also each has a lot of love put into them beyond just how they are sexually appealing. In fact a lot of stuff in Monogatari is written in a way to be logical and intriguing while leading into a sexually appealing result. Nisio essentially crafted Monogatari in a way to have all of the upsides of a harem, and none of the downsides. You can truly write anything good and mature as long as you put care into what you do, and make something that flows smoothly. I almost wonder if this what his main goal in making Monogatari.
