Today in 1967, Mach GoGoGo arrives in America as Speed Racer.

Did you watch it growing up?
>>
Too Chad Coded for modern f/a/gs
You need to have a moderately decent relationship with your dad to appreciate it
>>
>>282495332
I grew up watching almost every single Tatsunoko Pro anime EXCEPT Mach GoGoGo, kek.
>>
>>282495332
I sometimes saw it on Cartoon Network growing up in the 90s but it was always just random episodes with no context. I really enjoyed the premises like a a spy car in races and all the weird side plots that amusingly revolved around racing. I kind of disliked the kid and the monkey, just very time consuming intrusions on all the other more interesting stuff.
>>
>>282495332
I watched it, as a little kid. Yeah. Not in America, though.
>>
>>282495332
mach 5 is still a kino design
>>
I only watched the movie
>>
>>282495643
Did ANYBODY like Spridle and Chim-Chim? I feel like they're the original example of the annoying kid and his pet animal that you hate every minute they're onscreen.

Yes, I loved watching it as a kid.

Speed was my first sociopath crush.

>>
>>282497287
The movie is a great example of how live action adaptations of anime should be produced. A shame nobody has taken on the trend.
>>
>>282497287
>>282499198
The biggest problem with many live action adaptations is that they try to be realistic rather than embracing fantasy. This is why most of them end up looking like cosplay performances.
>>
>>282495332
Yes, as a tiny anon in the late '60s. On a B&W TV set even.
>>
>>282495332
Hell yeah, theme song alone would have been enough for me.
>>
>>282495332
I have a DVD boxset. I should probably watch it some day...
>>
Yes, on CN.
>>
>>282495332
I only watched some of it because my dad grew up watching it and loved it.
>>282495612
Really?
>>
This is one of the single digit number of anime that should be watched with the English dub correct?
>>
>>282495332
Just the episode now and then. It was action packed fun. Not to mention all the "oooohs" thrown around.

speed racer is SOVL. Mammoth car is the best arc.

>>282497287
Haven’t seen the movie in years but I remember it being really fun since it’s effectively a cartoon (which pissed off hollywood reviewfags). I can’t imagine it being fun if it was shot like Ford vs Ferrari. I should watch it again, the only things I remember are the bouncy ball ejector seats, the weird German pancake bit, and the “and I’m there to see it” voiceover at the end
>>
>>282495643
me too, watched it on tv somehow and loved it
>>
>>282497323
It's weird. For as obnoxious as they are, they also take an active role in resolving some of the major conflicts (spying on the Car Acrobatic Team, getting involved in fisticuffs, etc.)
>>
>>282502022
>Mammoth Car is the best arc
Seconded. The chase sequence from Part 1 is amazing.
>>
>>282495717
It really is THE anime car, isn't it? Are there any other anime cars that are even close to as famous?
>>
>>282497287
This movie is good af and people are retarded for complaining about it being campy. Shame that it's not on any streaming services anymore.
>>
>>282504973
it was free on youtube movies not too long ago, i rewatched it a few months ago that way. seems it got rotated out of the free movies since then though.
>>
>>282504973
>campy
Camp defined the 60's and 70's. Speed Racer is supposed to be that way. Look what they did with the remake in late 90's. It was cool but not as fun as the original.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEcbsTgY-IE
>>
>>282503730
I can't think of any other fully fictional cars that are as iconic. There's stuff like wangan midnight and initial D that have their cars, but using existing models feels like it's not quite the same thing.

The Batmobile?
>>
>>282503730
Well... The better question is how many people would buy the Mach 5 if it were real?
>>
>>282495332
I did! That and AstroBoy.
>>
>>282502022
>>282503725
>Mammoth Car
oh my fucking god. You just resurrected a childhood memory that has been utterly dormant for forty years.
>>
I remember seeing random episodes on cartoon network but I don't remember anything specific
>>
>>282495332
Watching speed racer gave my small child mind the impression that cars exploding and drivers dying were common in real life races. Dad brought to a nascar race for the first time and I was severely disappointed when nobody died and groups of cars weren't exploding.
>>
>>282505778
you made me go back and watch this. holy crap, such a mix of QUALITY, soul, and a few kino moments shining through. I still remembered the plot twist all these decades later.

What are its spiritual successors? Initial D is too serious. Maybe Oban Star Racers?
>>
>>282506451
Yu-Gi-Oh 5D is one of them
>>

Yes. Speed Racer and Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) were my first exposure to anime.
>>
>>282506451
Cyber Formula is pretty overtly riffing on Speed Racer's premise for the first half of the show, although it's played more straight.
If you're just talking about tone, a lot of Tatsunoko productions ride a similar line between adventure and goofy situations.
There aren't many racing shows in the first place though, so it's hard to think of ones that are doing something similar to Speed Racer. 5Ds >>282506606 is a pretty good answer though. Maybe Appare-Ranman for the most modern example, although it's leaning more on Wacky Races, which has a surprising amount of staying power in Japan.
>>

>>

James Bond was trendy when Speed Racer was made. That's what the audience, Japanese boys, wanted

my father was raised on it, and I watched the series with him after the movie came out, and it made me realize both my parents were technically weebs back in the day (my dad watched Speed Racer and Ogon Bat, whereas my mom watched Candy Candy, Mazinger Z, and Saint Seiya)

>>
>>282506271
Well to be fair racing WAS a lof more dangerous in the 50's and 60's, which is the period that show was portraying. The accident in the opening was inspired by a real life accident. (The one in 4:40 in the video looks close but it's quite it https://youtu.be/9ga_5V5509U )
>>
>>282495332

Yes, I've aso read the manga few years ago, and the Wachowski brothers movie was good too
>>
>>282499198
It's one of the few examples of cgi done right. Cgi will always look face and plastic shit. Just use it at your advantage, like this movie did.
It looks liek a plastic cartoon because it's a plastic looking cartoon, and very creative looking
>>
>>282495332
It was one of my favorite shows when I was really little. Though there's probably a bit of irony in my Dad putting it on for me while I was recovering from getting hit by a car.
>>
>>282495332

I watched it in the 90s when it was airing on Cartoon Network on weekday nights. Would usually come on along side reruns of Batman TAS. Fucking loved it, had the fanclub decoder watch that came with a tape. Bought a plastic model of the Mach 5 at a hobbyshop a few years ago.
>>
>>282497287
the speed racer movie was too high iq for me, I had to stop watching. and I'm saying this as a guy who's watched "hard to be a god" twice
>>
>>282505458
>Batmobile
absolutely. (Check out other designs by Hollywood prop maker Dean Jeffries.) Even other shows built around a special car like Knight Rider were more generic.
The futuristic RV in "Ark II" comes close.

also a shout-out for the Speed Racer ED where they go through all the historical "horseless carriages"

As a kid I loved it for the action and cars, I made a steering wheel out of cardboard with the buttons drawn on it and ran around the basement pretending I was driving the Mach V.
As an adult I love it for the unintentionally hilarious animation and dialog, and for how much the plot is just completely ludicrous in most episodes.

>>
>>282495332
Yes
Because for whatever reason we had the DVDs of it. Highly doubt my parents even knew what it was but that was the magic of DVD stores. You could lurk and find things more different than what the CIA-FBI algorithm quarantine would permit you to see
>>
>>282495332
I tried watching it a few years back but couldn't get into it. Maybe it's better dubbed?
>>
>>282495332
My first anime and my last for probably twenty years, excepting some random bits of Robotech I caught at a friends house (what, you mean this is a continuing story arc and I have to watch from the first episode to know what's going on? Fuck that noise) and maybe a Ghibli movie or two. My affiliate either didn't carry Astro Boy or I didn't bother because it was B&W. Didn't genuinely get into anime until Akira found broadcast in the late 90s and when Adult Swim launched.

Capcom has been pretty open in interviews over the years about their crossover games roster, so that story is true. There are a bunch of other characters that didn't make the cut, as well.
They managed to make Phoenix Wright into a pretty fun character on UMVC3, so I guess they needed a bit more time to give Go the same treatment. Shame it never happened.
