I don't even blame Mob himself or any of the characters. It feels more like a fault of the writer One than one character encapsulating it. Obviously it's trying to get losers out there to meet people. try to live, and have hope. Not the worst thing, but often I feel like It's really preaching to the audience that getting out there and pulling up your bootstraps is easier than it really is. So while the goal is noble, if you're going through it, it's less inspiring and more insulting how detached it is.
Still love the series. I had my finger on the idea but I could really only try to explain my reasoning on my current rewatch.

>Did anyone else think [story] was too optimistic
No, I'm not a miserable retard like you that thinks everything has to be as miserable and pointless as reality.
Contrary to what you might believe, optimism is good, actually.

I mean he didn't get the dream girl, he didn't get good at math, all he really did was have more self-confidence and diligently exercise.

Optimism is overrated. We should all just give up and die. Let's start with you OP.

>dude you're not special get a normal job like me a millionaire mangaka

mob psycho thoroughly rejects the idea of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. it preaches that everyone needs a support network that is both understanding and also willing to call you out on your bullshit. rather than pull on your bootstraps it says you should reach out to other people

Correct, though I do agree with anon that this message actually works well if you see the work inside a bubble and only tries to relate it's themes to itself, when we try to go beyond the context provided by the work we start seeing the obvious plot convenices, no one really is freaked out over super powers, no one really gets hurt or dies, all bad guys just realize they were wrong all along and so on.

that's an inseparable aspect of storytelling, for better or worse.

he was naive as fuck and was only proven right through might ironically

I wholeheartedly disagree with the message of this manga, but I wouldn't call it optimistic.
I think everyone without talent is able to, with the correct guidance, reach a point in life where they're comfortable and satisfied with their achievements. People just don't get that guidance and end up making shitty decisions that ensure they'll never reach the stage in life they would have wanted.
That said, specially gifted people are special and acting like being born with super powers (money, looks, intelligence) doesn't make you special is just denial of the real world.

I think ONE just wants those people to be kind and not make their privileges their entire personality. There's a perfectly normal example in Asagiri who's a popular rich girl but also a bully. Special, but a piece of shit.

You took the words right out of my mouth

the anime should've made mob feel more uncanny like the manga and i'm tired of pretending otherwise

Japan is a better country than yours. They can be optimistic.

Completely this

the lesson seemed more like that the scope of your talents can't and shouldn't extend past what your talent actually involves unless you make a concentrated effort to improve
mob had a talent for psychic powers but that didn't make him physically strong
the leaders of claw were all powerful but had no idea how to be good leaders despite wanting to rule the world
you can see the same thing in the real world, where intelligent and skilled people are presumed to make statements and solve problems they have no experience with just because they are "smart"
