Frieren is the kind of show that people decided was "the best" right at the start and weren't willing to accept that it really doesn't do anything special afterwards.

Before that the artist and editor were doing their own thing, but the start of the exam arc marks the end of the original Frieren premise sadly. I guess that's the way shounen works, but man did it ruin the thing that made it popular in the first place.
