5 years ago today, /a/non created a masterpiece of sequential art, "Paint". A manga about the beauty of watching paint dry. Join me as we read this forgotten classic together. Please don't post spoilers for anyone who might be reading for the first time.Original thread: https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/209219703.
I can't wait to find out what happens next
>>282530474Better strap in, the story is only just starting
According to the author, this Omake is not canon.
This must be reiji miyajima's new manga
not sure if it would be funnier or not if it wasn't copypasted
Positively Lynchian
*CRACK*
>>282530872WHAT.
bumpan, i'm at the edge of my seat
>>282530345Oh I remember this. Thank you for sharing it again. I remember rushing home from work to see how it goes.
I'm glad anons get to experience this again. The anime adaptation was really phoned in
>>282531160But atleast we finally got to know what color the paint was.
>>282530908Wish the author would address this plothole. How can he keep watching the paint dry without light?
>>282531224Yeah, but the funimation subs fucked it up by referring to it as "wallpaper"
>>282531241Once you learn to watch with more than your eyes you will begin to understand
>>282531385>>282531351>wordswordswordsdoes anyone actually read all this shit?
>>282531409I blame editor meddling
>>282531482Women, amirite?
I see what he was going for, but the doorbell arc really kinda lost me. Up until this point, the plot was moving at a steady clip. She's been talking for, what, 10 chapters now? Give me the elevator pitch, bitch.
>>282531284For me, this is definitely the moment when it jumped the shark. Some anons may like the change of direction, but the series definitely wasn't the same after this
>>282531824Comedy mangaka
The End ~
And here's the Omake. What did you think of it? Was it your first time reading? And author /a/non, are you out there?
>>282531860Now dump the superior French translation
>>282531839>>282531860>epilogue is a return to formbeautifulThanks OP. I forgot how good it was.
>>282531905No way, you should always read works in their original language. However I might dump the sequel
>>282531962>SpoilerGrass?
I don't get the plot. Why did he do it?
>>282530549Incredibly deep, pseudo intellectual even
>>282531970No, the original anon came back after a year and posted a second story, but it doesn't have a name. It's a divisive work among fans, mainly because there's a lot of dialogue (as in, two people), and purists see this as abandoning the original concept of the story. But in my opinion the payoff at the end is fantastic.

>>282532231He needed to find his raison d'etre
>>282532515You're already dead, bro. We all are. Funny how time works, no? "The future" lol. A meme concept. Anyway...
>>282532231>speedreading a 60-page manga
when is this getting the anime adaptation?
>>282530792KEK, stole my idea
>>282530345Hey I remember this. I saw it shortly after my leg surgery. Good times.
>>282532231Retard, it's right there in the last omake.
the last arc was shit
>>282530345>5 years agotime is merciless.
>>282531528I remember anons debating where the sob came from
>>282531160eh I like that they tried to do their own thing with the second wall and the hints to what color the paint was, even though it became complete nonsense by the end.
>>282532595>raison d'etre
>>282531724>the sobs coming closer>the head dipKINO
Reminds me of something Dan Kim would make.
>>282531885thanks OP. this is to seinen manga what FIST was to shonen.
>>282533398It really is.
>>282533398>FISTThey don't make manga like that anymore...
>>282531860
>>282533653They really don'tAnd by "they" I mean anonGet fuckin' to it
>>282532231I hate to sound pretentious, but honestly the best answer I can give is "you'll understand when you're older."
>>282532231He likes the color white, retard. It's not intentional, but sometimes you'll find yourself withdrawing from everyone around you. Humans are social creatures but we're not made to be surrounded by constant social stimulus on all sides 24/7. Eventually you'll find yourself slipping away and won't even have noticed, and it might cause intense cognitive dissonance.
It's gratifying to see that /a/ is still able to appreciate highbrow manga such as this.I will now post the sequel story, which was created a year later.

>>282534533>>282534556>>282534721
>>282534556So it is a sequel... or a prequel?
>>282534488What is this sorcery
That's part of the mystery
>>282534848 meant for >>282534823
>>282534848No no no not again, I just wanted to see paint dry...
For better or worse, you can see the author trying a new direction.
I'm starting to think the wall is evil
>>282534556Is this Paint Next generation?
It was a prequel all along!
The End~
>>282535378Did they leave the drawing there for a decade before he painted over it?
>>282535334>worked so hard to talk to the painter because her dad left her
>>282535378
Don't worry, guys. The line about her parents pushing him to propose implies they get back together... right?
It's... It's pure kino.
>>282535334wow i'm fucking retarded
Kino. The anime I consume have to be truly bone-chilling, genre-redefining, trope-subverting, highbrow, emotionally draining, atmospheric, spine-tingling, teeth clenching, gut wrenching, stomach turning, dark and eerie, dread-inducing suspenseful build up with gradual feeling of escalation that matches the anime ultimate despair, elegantly disturbed, postmodern and nuanced, Lynchian, bone-chilling grizzly slow burn with an unflinching “say more with less” approach, strong character development and nail-biting, mind-bending finale, open-ended, disturbingly ambiguous, free of cheap fanservice, generic artstyle and infantile tropes.
>>282535334I genuinely liked this, thanks for reposting it
I don't get it
>>282531860>>282531885Was it an intentional choice on your part to leave chapter 4 unspoilered? It was hidden in the original thread.
>>282536151That's true, I just didn't bother to check which chapters were hidden.I have no excuse for altering the intended experience in such a way.I also didn't post the alternate ch 52
>>282530416>>282536151Chapter 4 has some great foreshadowing. The protagonist moves ever so slightly, hinting towards there being more to the story than just the protagonist and the wall. It's such a small detail that the average speedreader won't notice it but it pays off for attentive anons who are following the story at its intended pace.
Finally some god damn good manga
Oh yeah I remember this one. It fucking sucks.
where's the archive link for the sequel?
>>282530345>It's just soap opera "characters" monolgueing at each otherlegitimately badin fact it's worse every time you repost it
>>282534899No counter argument.
>>282534976>>282535094Has she done anything other than crying or whining?
There's too much filler.
>>282535334wait, so some guy locked himself in his girlfriend's house and painted over her childhood drawing?
I liked it
>>282534674>she didn't have the patience to watch paint dryCINEMA
>>282535334I thought the mangaka jumped the shark, but this brought it back home
>>282537410
>>282530872This is peak>>282531329This is jumping the shark
>>282535605>>282537499Plotholes manThis is what happens when publishers force authors to crank out new chapters every week, they have to make shit up as they go even if it contradicts what came beforeSuch a shame how commercial interests always ruin the overarching artistic vision
>>282531456How quickly sympathy turns to scorn
>>282531885Thanks for dumping, and yeah
>>282531885never saw either before; i shall rate the original.>ARTskillful and complements the story and themes perfectly. perfect amount of detail for the story>PACINGmasterful. events-wise: not too much and not too little. and you don't know how much time is passing until you do>STRUCTURErelates to pacing. i'll add here that the suspense was masterful too. it could've gone anywhere especially with the ambiguity of time. the final 2 chapters are great as everyone knows but also appropriate. it's not a novel culmination but here it's not hackneyed or cliche. and it's not just where it ended but how because more novice storytellers might be tempted to thread the story from chapter 58 gradually to 59 which would have been much less effective>STORYlike i said it could've gone anywhere before the final act. personally didn't really like this choice but i didn't actively dislike it. i was still along for the ride and attached. it was done welloverall i liked it. easy recommend to all but the level 0 closeminded slop enthusiasts
>>282532231Because it's there
>>282537410>too much fillerHe needed that to ensure the surface was smooth. It's like you've never painted a wall before
>>282531824bad ending

>>2825303455 years ago already, huh
>>282531284>>282531308Okay it lost me hereIt was good while it lasted thoughI can't imagine how someone could get the idea it was best to insert a woman screeching for several pages
>>282536911>where's the archive link for the sequel?https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/228653212
It peaked at chapter 6 and I'm fully convinced the rest was just forced by the editors
Would it be more or less kino if the artist actually drew each panel each time?
>>282541008Someone needs to do something about this time thing.
>>282546859ZA WARUDO
>>282546859Personally I think we should just all become Billy Pilgrim
>>282540502would make for a good banner (if done by someone not shit)
