>>282598780The writer only planned the first half of the story ahead, then started adding more subplots and themes without wrapping anything up. On top of that, the production schedule collapsed halfway in, so the animation in the second half became more minimal the longer it went on (although the storyboards hid it pretty well). Then they missed a deadline and had to fit the finale into an underbudgeted special written by someone else because the original writer ragequit, which resulted in a badly animated episode with an even less satisfying open ending than the original TV run's open ending.The result (minus the special) is still something pretty special if you like mahou shoujo with magical realist character drama and striking visuals, but it filters plotfags hard, and I can imagine why Japanese viewers didn't buy the BDs considering the inflated prices per disk there.

>>282601633Anon, the characters and themes of the show all go to shit in the second half, and without them the symbolism is empty and means nothing.The plot never needed to explain every little detail, it could have remained dreamlike and vague. but it needed to have some kind of coherent emotional arc for the characters to make that land and there just wasn't one. There was no catharsis at the end of WEP, just confusion and rage.
