What's new for you this weekend?
Tomino will never be retro
"Retro" still doesn't mean "old".
>>282601554It does though
>>282601554"Retro" means "this existed before I was born and that makes it feel magical to me".No one in these threads is over 25 and you all know it.
>>282601554Found the dipshit still claiming the PS2 isn't retro.
come back to a schizo. jesus.I started watching legend of the overfiend. it's a little interesting so far. I want to pick up patlabor since an another anon in the previous threads gave a compelling argument for it
>>282601336i actually am watching zeta gundam rn. good stuff
I can't believe the word retro has become a trigger word for sensitive snowflakes.
>>282602064
>>282601702I'm about to hit 27 actually
>>282602127i'm 32
>>282601336I finished gundam wing, watching digimon season 2 now.
>>282602153Not retro
SAY MK IIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MmrGiwTD-E&list=RD_MmrGiwTD-E&start_radio=1>>282602153>gundam wingfunny, I'm reading Frozen Teardrop right now>>282602201anon, wing is 30 years old now. It's retro
do we have to have the same argument every thread on what we consider retro because of one faggot?if you don't like it then leave the thread and hide it
>>282601702I'm 30.Watching Rayearth right now, I only read the manga 15+ years ago.I'm having a blast.
>>282602266You're free to watch and read them as long as you stop calling them retro.
>>282602597The actual hard definition of retro comes from fashion, was coined in 1972 and specifically describes the styles between the '40s and '50s, so Astro Boy isn't retro if you want to be pedantic like the little autistic shit that you are.So, from now on we're only allowed to post anime and manga up untill 1959 in the retro threats. So, somebody has seen the latest Kenzo Masaoka short? Shit is fire yo
>>282602908Masaoka Kenzo or the fashion stuff?
is there a way to find out the staff credits? who was the character designers for this?this seriously looks familiar? hiroyuki? it's not in the ending credits so i'm wondering if it was a pen name or something
damnhot
>>282601554So Zeta Gundam isn't retro but watching Zeta Gundam could be considered retro?>>282602064Are you the guy on /m/ who made the vibe checks thread?
>>282603269I was just joking around but it looks like a janny took offense to that.
Holy shit this is where this is from? kek god damn it
>>282603935Well I don't recall who it is exactly, but it should be Kitazume or one of the other guys in his circle, the animation staff in it heavily overlaps with CCA, and Oomori shared lots of old genga from it on Twitter. Yamagata and Yamashita have some CD credits on it as well, I think most people involved on the animation side are the ex Bebow guys who had been working on Tomino shows prior.
>>282604923this is exactly what i was thinking. the artstyle is just too familiar to not have him/majority of his team in it. I'm thinking the pen name route just because of how out there this is compared to his usual works and maybe he didn't want to be associated with it under his own name?
>>282604996Yeah, that or business reasons, Dezaki and Tomino use lots of pen names as well on their regular works, Tomino boards as Minoru Yokitani on his own shows, for example. And I don't understand why.
>>282605113>I don't understand why.Japanese autism, they love their pen names, please understandThe real answer is that it's common in all of East Asia to have multiple pen names. Katsushika Hokusai for example had at least six hitsumei (art name), the first one of which was Shunrō, because his master was Katsukawa Shunshō, the kanji Shun in Shunrō comes from Shunshō and was a gift from his master as a symbol of his accomplishments.
>>282605113I didn't know that about tomino. Thank for the information, I'm not surprised he does this somehow. Especially because for a guy who became lead animation director he has a fraction of the works i would expect from him even removing his long manga career. Especially back then when standards were more rigid in nip companies. It's just obvious when it switches back to is work. He seemed to do a lot more work in the first part compared to the second part. either way it's interesting to catch things like this because you're just sitting there like "wait i know this fucking artstyle"
>>282604996https://x.com/dmfrommb/status/1409463014424731654"for years we thought that Hiroyuki kitazume had collaborated with designs on Urotsukidoji. A short time ago several Kitazume colleagues confirmed that Kitazume did not work in this title, instead there was another person hiding behind that pseudonym. What a disappointment!"
>>282605273Somehow i trust that less than it just being him or another person/his student in general.
>>282601336I was watching this retro 20 year old anime, Gurren Lagann. It's a hidden gem from the Golden Age of mecha.
>>282605491I think it's funny how in the '80s people called the original Gundam, that was less than ten years old, an old anime, and now if you call something like Gurren Lagann old someone will come out and say it's actually not an old anime at all
>>282605855No one said anything like that
>>282606064In Japan it was common.
What's with these anons today
>>282601702It's my birthday tomorrow, and I'm already over the hill.
>>282601336>stealth gundam threadI finished Char’s Counterattack and I thought it was a gigantic mess of a movie. Last twenty minutes was kino though.
>>282606264 Not stealth just what I had on hand. However, from anon reactions I should have just found a different one, seemed to attracted shitposters. It still counts as retro though.CCA was a gigantic mess of a movie and yet it's still entertaining somehow to discuss. I'm curious after you've watched all of that what your perspective on char is? There seems to be about four camps that you tend to be drawn to for his characterization.
>>282601336i'm 32 episodes into double zeta. then i can finally watch chars counter attack. getting closer to finishing up the UC timeline and bening done with gundam. i plan to watch patlabor after that.
>>282606414I thought that Char was a very self centered person and wanted attention since he never got any as a child apparently. I think he took control of Neo Zeon as a last ditch effort for attention as well. Maybe the movie spelt that out for me though and I hadn’t realized it yet.
Currently watching Macross, and I'm sorry I didn't listen before, this shit is amazing
>>282601702Considering most of /a/ is just cancer from /v/, I believe it.
The nice thing any liking older shows is that if you like it you can buy go out and buy cels right after watching it
>>282607945Unless you like good shows, in which case the cels are all sold out and/or marked up 10x on resale and/or counterfeit.
Zeta my favorite anime of all time and I've watched it about 5 times.
>>282607980If you can't spot counterfeit cels that's a personal problem. I don't seem to have issues getting cels of things I like in the sub 15k for popular series, and sub 7k for somewhat popular
Watching Genesis climber Mospeeda. Not bad but it´s no Macross.
>>282608328>I don't seem to have issues getting cels of things I likeHow do you know they're not counterfeit?Without relying on vibes. Prove it.
>>282608443In what way do you want me to prove some if the ones I have? The line fading? The way the layers were painted on the back? Whether it contains a douga, background, or genga along with the cel? You want me to scan and over lay the frame on top and show you? As I said it's just a personal problem such as a lack of knowledge, if you can't spot fakes
>>282608569Post a photo and a screencap of a public release of the exact frame the cel was used in.This shouldn't be too hard.
It's 2025. "Retro" is early digipaint; Zeta is way too old to qualify
>watching old anime>the characters have noses and lipsDayum
>>282608733Agreed. We should call these threads "cel anime" or "analog anime", as opposed to "nostalgic anime" (old stuff that doesn't fit the former categories) to mark the difference. If we really need a moving goalpost, "dadcore anime" should be clear enough.
>>282607945>>282608328May I see your cels?
>>282608933Sure anon. Here's a couple
>>282601702I've been using 4chan for 20 years.Kill me.

>>282609064>>282609116>>282609141damn these are cool anon
>>282609141Is it just the hand or is the rest of Mr Bajeena original?
>>282609200Looks like the stacked cels for hand movement.
>>282609200It's a whole set up. It's base+mouth+ hand&cup. I just decided to be autistic and wrap each cel individually for protection and then inside a plastic case before I framed it.
>>282608697The three I posted if you want to be autistic about itChar z Gundam ep 36 2:43 mouth is a cut before Mashmyre ZZ Gundam cel ep 11 1:01 (no op version)arion cel 3:36 (its a zoom)Have fun
>>282609257Better safe than sorry with four vaginas. You never know where those other cels have been.
>>282609610Exactly. Who knows where they've been or who's been in them. the real reason is because the person who had it before me stored them together and there was a lot of paint transfer especially on the mouth cel it's not pretty to display them like this but I want to keep him in decent condition for a long time
>>282602499Good shit.
>>282609713>spoilerThis is actual psychological horror I didn't ask for.Who knows how many historic cels are being stored in degrading conditions to this day?
>>282603977Anime name?
>>282609870Boku no Yaranaika
>>282609852A lot honestly. a lot of people probably chucked them in to storage in their humid and hot houses (since ac is rare in jp) and just left them. they used to be cheap and plentiful so why bother? some studios just reused them or threw them out. sometimes they are stuck to the douga and you ruin the douga by separating them (happened with a bright cel of mine. luckily the drawing is in good condition.) I prefer douga for that reason. even with proper storage nothing is guaranteed. a kamille cel of mine was folded in storage. it's in perfection condition otherwise.Sometimes you get gems like >>282598497 >>282598552 every so often
>>282609870look at the post above anon
Hyper Police's cast is already very good with only 3 episodes. The main 3 characters of Natsuki, Batanen and Sakura are a good trio of different types of dumb along side the side characters like the president who is killing it for the amount of screen time he is given.
I'm wondering if it's just easier to read the galactic heroes novels over watching the series
I'm on ep 17 of LotGH. Pretty enjoyable, warmed up to it a lot with episodes 3+.
>>282612421I started it a bit ago and it's really fun as well. I move through it slowly since it's the kind of show you want to watch fully immersed in. it's so funny though i find myself laughing at a bunch of scenes
>>282612528>move through it slowlyYeah. At most I've watched 3 episodes at once and then I'll break off for a day or so. I do want to devote some time to watching more all at once at some point, though, just for kicks.>so funnyI got an honest kek out of everyone turning against Kastrop in EP 5, I think it was the ladies picking up knives that sealed it for me.
>>282609870Thank you.
>>282611451Fuck I'm drunk. Thank you.
>>282612785kek it's okay. I'm high as well. i highly recommend watching it while under the influence of something. it's something interesting that's for sure
Watch Ginga Nagareboshi Gin
>>282601336I actually started watching Aura Batler Dunbine from the last thread. Goddamn, Garalia is annoying.
>>282612421Makes sense. It's a 110 episode OVA. It would take a while to warm up.
>>282608804It's a special kind of feel to see proper noses go away in anime..
>>282601336funny enough I'm watching his show right now, because the movies are a complete mess. char's english voice is hot
>>282601336
>>282601336Watched a few episodes of Xabungle and part 1 of MD Geist. Attempting to download Daikengo but it's only got like 3 seeds from people that must live in a Uruguayan favela with how slow it is
>>282602235uoooh L-gaim erotic
>>282615843 >not ikedaHow do you live with yourself
>>282601336I watched the (remake, if it counts for the thread topic) of Space Battleship Yamato. It's good, I really do like it and it feels like glorious old space opera science fiction, but holy fuck do I utterly despise what feels like this incredibly forced relationship drama with Yuki abandoning the engagement at the start of the second series. It was a wonderful thing and warmed my blackened heart, and now it feels like nails on chalkboard to watch. About the only way it could get worse would be she hits her head or something and gets amnesia and they reset the whole relationship. The rest of the series is great. Raised a glass to Okita.
>>282616193I can't read nihongo, what does it say about the 'faces' around the feet, if anything at all about them
>>282601336I have just now finished Zeta. It's a little bleak isn't it?
>>282609198What should I buy to experience this?
>>282618667>TAKE MY SUPER SAIYAN GHOST POWER ATTACK, SCIROCCO!it's fucking lame and comical.Zeta is seriously THE most overrated UC gundam ever. I don't get the appeal. The plot sucksThe characters suckThe mecha design aside from Hyaku Shiki sucksChar sucksThe writing sucks. It's too reliant on references, just like GQuarks
>>>/m/All mecha discussion should be banned from /a/.
>>282618726sucks is a strong word but honestly when i first watched Zeta it just felt so disappointing after MSG79. I didn't really have any issues with Kamile but the last stretch of the show is just so much worse than the excellent last stretch of the original, particularly the stuff with Rosamia and the fight with the O. Its also not helped by the whole neo zeon plotline getting shafted hard by ZZ being gimped for the sake of CCA, making a major part of Zeta just feel pointless. As for the designs, I really liked the MK2, Hyaku Shiki, Zeta, Qubely, Hambrabi and Gaplant but every other design ranged from meh to complete shit (fuck the psycho gundam)
>>282618726I'll need to think on it to see if I agree but contrary to what you're saying my immediate reaction is positive.I'll get back to you on it when I've completed the rest of Gundam.>The mecha design aside from Hyaku Shiki sucksReally? I felt that was one of the weaker ones, with my favorite being the Gabthley.
>>282618968>MK2I don't get the appeal.it screams "BORING" all over its design.even the color scheme is unappealing.Qubeley is cool and unique.
>>282619174I like it since its a really nice alternative take on the RX-78, unfortunately because of that every single GM and "RX-78" design we've gotten since has actually been MK2 based instead of OG grandpa based

I'll watch this once I'm done with G-Reco and Victory Gundam.

This looked better than all the Junji Ito adaptations. Why aren't there more pure horror anime in general? There are like 5.
>>282619549Future Boy Conan
>>282619613
>>282619370>>282619531>>282619644Considering that the Disney version came after this, I’m convinced that Disney ripped off this version, since it has lots of similarities like talking fish sidekicks and the Prince’s statue being found in a sunken ship.It wouldn’t be the first time Disney ripped off anime afterall.
>>282619720>"I'll be your next opponent" or something
>>282619537that's interesting because I feel older anime that rely more on dialogue usually have crisp, clear exchanges, but modern anime features more whispered speech, and more dialogue layered over other environmental sounds
>>282619625It's good but skip the filler.
>>282619939It’s not just anime, it’s an old media thing in general. Older movies and TVs have dialogue that’s written and performed to be more like a stage play. Dialogue nowadays however, tries to be “realistic”. It’s one reason why older media just feels different from newer media. Older media is just simply more theatrical in nature.
>>282619537>ass framerate (of overall animation)You aren't one of those dipshits who considers 60fps AI rapings of classic openings that you find on Youtube to be improvements, are you?

downloading El Hazard at the moment. no clue what its about, but it was on my list of things to watch, so I'm sure its gonna be fun
>>282619680Junji keeps being shared for some reason. They just need to give the studios a proper budget
>>282619865Didn't Disney rip off the tekuza lion man's as well?
>>282619865>the Prince’s statue being found in a sunken shipThat was in the original story.

>>282618667How do you feel about it beyond that? I liked the bleakness of it it made it stand out to me a lot more. It still had the usual tomino fuckery but the enjoyment I got out of it was immense.
>>282607945Collecting is the least interesting thing to me.
>>282618968>Its also not helped by the whole neo zeon plotline getting shafted hard by ZZ being gimped for the sake of CCAthis sucks the most because when i finally got to watch CCA after going through 3 UC entries i just felt disappointed

This is probably the best place to ask. Is there is a good set up for ripping laser discs? Do they degrade over time? I don't think there is a complete set of ld rips for LOTGH and I'm just tempted to do it myself. I know nothing about ripping it even own an ld player but I'm prepared to invest for a few other films I see. I believe arion has a deleted scene that isn't present on the bd/rips as well.
I love the original Cutey Honey. Its a crime they didn't get Tomoko Masada to voice Honey in any of the later anime because she does does a great job with both her sweet side and her strong side.
>>282633066like the Domesday Duplicator? I don't know much
>>282633079Very fun show
>>282633543having pretty much every transformation be a unique animation was a good choice. It also led to the less important things looking like this which brings joy in its own way
>>282601336I'm 67 episodes into Legends of The Galactic Heroes and it's such a slog that I just want to drop it. /m/ said to at least wait until episode 82. I believe sincerely that people that hype this up did it as a prank because there isn't anything good going for it.>>282633079Cutey Honey is based.
>>282633066Just get a capture device and rip what you have. Before you would even begin you would have to have a decent player, put in the domesday thingy and do a whole rigamarole of crap like filters to make it something a zoomer will play in the background for ecred and not even watch.I rip my laserdiscs with a cheap stand alone device and its good enough for me.
>>282633886If you don't like it why not drop it? No reason to watch so many episodes of you don't like it. It's just wasting your time. Just feels like you're trying to hard to fit in if you can't admit you don't like it and turn it off
>>282634000I know no idea what you're even trying to say here. What's your ripping set up?
>>282633736Yeah it's charming. I'm no expert but the whole show kind of has a touch of psychedelic pop art feel that fits perfectly. I actually think Go Nagai is a pretty interesting, multi-layered westaboo and artist that gets underestimated.
>>282633886Don't force yourself if it's not your cup of tea. I liked it a lot, but some of the praise it gets is very exaggerated.

I've been thinking of watching old anime, would love some recommendations, some I did kinda watch, but I remember NOTHING about them>Gundam Wing>Texhnolize (grammar?)>Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040>Monster>Lain>Magic King Rayearththoughts?Any good ecchi would be appreciated as well, I've been archiving old stuff as wll
>>282606831
>>282627849I liked it, I think it's a bit too heavy on not that interesting action, it mostly boils down to 1v1 duels where both sides are doing the same thing. So the ratio to gimmick vs bread and butter fights was a bit off.It at no point delved into 'so bad it's good' territory but I was finding it too humorous for some of the drama to hit like I think they intended. There's a distinction between 'oh that's fucked up' and 'lol that's fucked up'So there was a bit of push and pull here, on one hand 'oh no Katz died' on the other 'a fucking rock'.Emma's death hit me quite hard though. It's a meme, everyone talks about, it's the first thing anyone says about it, but holy shit people get hit in the face a lot in this show.>>282630268Will do.
>>282634458>>282634129Because this is the end of my backlog. After this I'm pretty done with anime. I've seen everything I wanted to see. It would have happened sooner if the 1973 version on Enma-kun wasn't hard to find. Also I've never dropped anything for good that wasn't a long running American sitcom.
Since there are a lot of mecha watchers in this thread of any of you are interested the /m/ Wikia is looking for volunteers. Mostly for pictures, but general minutia is also good. Most retro stuff is covered. The Navbox page is a useful site map.https://mmecha.fandom.com/wiki/
>Just remembered Saber Marionette series existIll be watching that next
I dunno if it's considered retro but I've been watching Higurashi after playing Silent Hill F (read it multiple times but anime is a first time watch). It's a really good adaptation but the only thing I dislike is that the anime always takes the more literal approach to things and while I get why they did it it doesn't land as well with me knowing all the twists.>Mion says something suspicious>Question arc it's suppose to sound malicious or strange because keiichi is getting himizawa syndrome>Answer arc Mion is just really worried about Keiichi. But in the anime, in the question arc, they'll use scary or weird facial expressions and set direction which I get it it's suppose to add to the tension but it bothers me because it's suppose to be more open to interpretation which it isnt. You could argue it's point of view sure but I do like in the VN, it's a lot less direct.

Enjoying Miyazaki's animation for Araiguma Rascal. The first few episodes of this show were probably the weakest; other than the ones focused on Sterling's mother they felt mostly uninspired, and Rascal was too young to do anything. But as soon as she's out of the hospital it picks up and lots of nice characters get introduced. Good slice of life, with drama that can get heavy but the show does its best to avoid getting absorbed in misery and keeps the focus on daily life.I'm expecting the quality to go down a bit once Miyazaki leaves for the last third, but the storyboards seem pretty solid when it counts, beyond just Tomino. Kyousuke Mikuriya's for example were nice. I looked him up and learned this dude got tired of the job in the 2000s and become a taxi driver. Damn, imagine meeting an industry vet like that. He worked on a ton of 70s Lupin and other TMS classics.

>>282635252If you haven't checked it out yet Shinkon Gattai Godannar is a fun super robot anime with a bit of ecchi>>282639211The movies and OVAs are different continuities so I would recommend first watching production order for the tv series and OVAs which is Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor OVA, On Television, The New Files OVA and then watching the two movies. The movies are more serious in tone with a mystery vibe while the TV show and OVAs are buddy cop stories with mecha.

>>282639385>>282639588thanks anon(s)So from what i posted the best option would be to start with "the early days" 7ep ova?
>>282639660Yeah, it's a blend of everything and if you like it you'll also generally enjoy the TV series/new files. There's also the manga by Masami Yuuki that's also very good, and strides a middle line between the TV series and patlabor 2, though it's been taken off of Mangadex unfortunately
>>282640085thanks anon i felt stupid for a second. I dl'd both the ova and then the 40+ ep series. if i like the ova i'll just buy the manga in nip anyways. it's up for torrent too

>>282601336Gundam is the most boring, overrated series of all time. Macross at least had cool ship designs. I watched all of Gundam 079 and Zeta, and I legit don't get the appeal beyond, "There was nothing else too watch back then."

>>282641794Content wise, it's a wacky tezuka anime from the 80s with small amounts of drama. The subtitles on nyaa seem like they were machine translated by foreigners but are mostly understandable. also they didn't encode every episode right, so you might have to look at the srt files directly. Don't know what the subtitles are like on streaming sites.

>>282601336Oh hey i was waiting for this thread.watching>outlaw starJust finished the first arc, very unique setting with all the mysticism in a sci-fi setting and im really liking the cast. My only big complaint so far is the midway cutting and scene transitions using gunshot sounds, dont get me wrong, its a cool choice but it keeps jumpscaring me with how loud they are, it was specially bad in the 1st 2 episodes where there was a lot of shooting, so it was both startling AND confusing. Oh and cool as fuck OP and ugly as fuck ED girls.>video girl AiVery by the books romance with melodramatic love-triangle (though its more of a love conga line), the soft colors of the backgrounds are nice but overall its not bad but not good either. Though there is some nice fanservice with sweet 16 Ai's panties and her DFC at display with nipples, which is now only reserved for fucking ecchi if that, god how far have we fallen as a society.
>>282642440he's the smartest man in the unit (mabe in the whole police force) and he knows it
Five episodes into Zambot 3 and it really seems like an interesting ahead of it's time mecha being pulled down by 70s toy companies. I am admittedly a 70s mecha noob but the amount of collateral damage the battles cause and the grief it brings is even worse than Gundam's. The constantly shouting protagonist and the time wasting combining robot pieces are elements I think could go.
>>282605855>>282606064People did say stuff like that. You can find fucking English usenet pages from the late 80s or early 90s calling stuff from the early 80s "ancient/old" and retro was already being used to refer to 80s anime as early as the late 90s.I think the reason why things used to be perceived as old much sooner in the past was because cel art ages a lot quicker and are more obviously products of their time. (certain hair colours are more common in the 70s-80s but mostly vanish in the 90s due to the availability of paints, or the quality of the equipment to record the cels, etc).Whereas with digital, digital art doesn't really age as noticeably with the only real common tell if a digital anime is 20-25 years old is the low resolution. So there's a lot more apprehension calling something like Lucky Star or Gurren Lagann retro in 2025 when people were already calling stuff Macross and Patlabor retro in the late 90s and 2000s.
>>282645438Plus, the general anime artstyle hasn't changed as dramatically from the year 2000 to 2025 compared to say, 1975 to 1999.You can tell if something was made in the early 80s or the late 80s at a quick glance, but something from the year 2002 could reasonably have come out in 2009 at a quick glance.

>>282645471The rate of change in the medium has slowed down. Same reason why the gap between PS2 and PS5 feels way smaller than the gap between PS2 and Neo Geo. That's why the "but it's a quarter century old" doesn't work. It's not about time.

>>282649173Google Groups has a pretty huge archive of the Usenet tbdesuMost searches for "retro anime" mostly make it seem like people in the 1990s generally considered 60s-70s to be retro, but there was an uptick in the late 90s to include early 80s stuff as retro. I found a post trying to describe "retro anime" as the era before anime started getting really detailed, so I'll assume from a 1990s viewpoint, retro anime was generally stuff before the 1984-1985 OVA boom.

>>282649641Because I prefer other bbs boards that aren't those. I use them sometimes. Arguably I would say that that random Japanese person had a larger influence and authority then the Western person especially in the 80-90s
>>282649793Not really, let me explain. The passage of time is a part of it since the definition of "retro anime" very clearly changes as the years ago on.But another part of what really defines retro is the feeling that something like it couldn't be made in the present without dramatically standing out. I think this second part is really important when trying to classify digital anime as retro since digital anime hasn't dramatically changed artistically compared to cel anime over the decades.Lucky Star or Ichigo Marshmallow couldn't really be considered "retro" despite being 20 or so years old because they could theoretically debut for the first time in the last ten years and not really stand out as feeling "old". This can apply to artstyle but also in presentation, execution, delivery of plot, style of humor, etc. Meanwhile, their contemporaries like say, Paranoia Agent or even Code Geass may be considered retro because they are clearly products of their era and would stick out like a sore thumb as an "older-style" show if they debuted within the last 10 years. It's why modern "neo-retro" shows like Megalo Box or even Puniru keep getting compared to 20-30 year old shows.
>>282649828>Pailsen Filesare you looking for the movie or the ova?
>>282649924A quick summary:Retro includes>ALL cel anime (this includes cel anime made in the early 2000s)>all really early (pre-2000s) digital anime>2000s digital anime that's indicative of their era and aren't a part of a larger trend that continued into the 2010s or 2020s.Blassreiter would be an example of a "retro" 2000s anime. K-On! is not. Nurse Witch Komugi-chan would be an example of a "retro" 2000s anime. One Piece is not.

>>282642440Because he's fucking Shinobu and you're not.
>>282601554>>282601702Retro is a style, not age. In vidya, retro is what games looked like before the HD era. In anime, retro is what anime looked like before the digipaint era. If you try to put retro on a time scale, you'll end up with autistic shit like "Madoka is retro because when Madoka came out, Evangelion was considered retro, and about as much time passed since then", and not even zoomers would agree.
>>282652243This definition of retro is just cope from people that don't want to admit that they're getting old and the stuff they watched and played with when they were young is considered old as well. Grow up, you aren't 15 anymore.

I started LOGH today (My Conquest and then OVA).It's so fucking good. Why does this have a reputation for being a 'boring slowburn'? Its pacing is not that different from a modern show. watching Gundam has made Ikeda's voice be instantly recognisable for me. I can't escape him.

>>282601336I watched Golgo 13: The ProfessionalI rate it 5/10. Pretty average.
>>282653038Nice. I've been waiting for more episodes to be out but what I watched of this was awesome
I’m watching the original Anne of Green Gables and I’m pretty let down. It’s Takahata so I had high expectations but it’s unbelievably dry (even for his works). You could really tell they were cutting corners as well. It just doesn’t hold up to the liveliness of the book. It’s impossible to replicate the playfulness of the prose from the original but I feel as though the whimsy is lacking in the show. Part of it might be because when I read Anne of Green Gables I somewhat put myself in the shoes of Marilla watching Anne grow. The show feels very “objective” in its presentation of events which is probably why it feels dry to me.
>>282636052Don't know if you are still lurking, but DEEN's biggest flaw is the butchering of Meakashi-hen, from the tone, to the atmosphere, to the excision of the Mion, Shion switching places on the day of the tattoo plot point, etc. That and some of the jndividual fucky looking art aside its a fine adaptation.
>>282645471The compositing and photography in modern anime is a whole universe apart from most digital anime made in the early to mid-2000s, lots of early digital shows were essentially made like cel animation with a couple new digital effects incorporated in sparingly, or just a single blur filter added on, once you hit the mid-10s things really started to change and just how explicitly "digital" most anime looked. You can find examples earlier of notable digital compositing, but leveraging it was definitely a slow process to spread.
>>282653462Objective directing is one of Takahata's main things, which he developed further particularly in this work. Since WMT were made for the whole family to watch and Anne is not a lovable idealized child like Heidi, he thought of this style and ended up finding the idea of allowing multiple perspectives interesting. Ultimately it's a different kind of reading, with his own essence, which would be impossible for a director like Takahata not to offer. It's not like he asked to adapt it anyway. He had not read the book before being given the project, because he thought it was for girls.Personally I prefer Heidi and Marco.

>>282601336The two FE OVAs. I only remembered the memes with Marth screaming out loud for Elice before being warped out of Altea Castle. Gave the full thing a go and it was not that bad. Kinda wished that it atleast got the 12 episode treatment because leaving it hanging at the end of chapter 3 feels scummy.
>>282601336Ngl I've been watching a lot of older/retro anime lately because of Tubi
Watched Robot Carnival while slightly high, good shit. The story about the doll felt particularly haunting somehow, deffo my favorite.
>>282652625So I searched Oberstein's VA and he fucking died at 46 years of age, wtf?!He still managed to voice Rei, Mquve, D etc.
>>282635252You should watch Cosplay Complex. It's a fun little Ecchi, it's a shame it's only 3 episodes though.
>>282655531Also I swear that story with the doll was about repressed pedophilia but maybe I was just interpreting way too deeply into it
>>282653252The manga it's just another city hunter. It doesn't have a Lot of history. It's just a client giving isntructions to golgo and doign the job. The proffesional was More interesting cause golgo had a Lot of problem compared to the manga that it feels that he's just a Gary stu that can do impossible shit. Instead of long sex scenes that doesn't matter and feels like filler just to make look More stoic to golgo, dezaki would have spend More Time in charcaterizations scenes like yuku Toshi or ninja scroll Kimetsu no Yaiba animation looks awful compared to retro animes
