Shin Eva's problem has always been the tv show. The show establishes in painstaking detail the nature of the characters over the course of over 500 minutes of run time. From the very first cut of the very first Shin film, characters are acting in a way inconsistent with the tv characters. Why? Because things changed off screen and Anno and friends need them to be like this for their movie to "work". It's just lazy writing, combined with a lack of experience writing for a Film's runtime (which people like Tsurumaki admit outright) vs writing a series.This problem only gets worse and more forced through the time skip. 'Just imagine the character changed because of x/y/z in the interim years we didn't show you at all' is so fucking bad. I'm not even against the film's in principal. If you want to show what these characters would do and become in different circumstances I think that can be really interesting. But Shin Eva's sin is always character is subordinate to narrative. The new films are written with an end in mind, in direct contrast to the original tv series necessitating rewrite after rewrite to accommodate the evolving characters.
The original series sucked.I prefer the rebuilds instead.
