Ito's parents did not get her vaccinated right away while waiting for the crisis to be resolved and she caught whooping cough when she was less than a year old. The lung damage caused by the whooping cough gave her a lifetime of getting bronchitis or pneumonia virtually any time a URI came around. The cumulative damage from these infections led her to being diagnosed with emphysema just about the time Season two was being aired. She also has a side issue with "nervous ataxia" which first appeared during the broadcast of season one and led to the manga's first hiatus. This causes one side of her body to stop moving and each time she has to be evaluated for a stroke. Its not listed in references as a normal symptom of emphysema though so it might be a separate issue, maybe even psychological. It also could be the onset of something like Bells Palsy or MS, as she is the right age for their onset, but it would really suck to acquire a rare nervous disorder on top of lung disease. She has also landed in the hospital a couple times for bad drug interactions and taking her medication's wrong.
