Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the fortieth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>282530528

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
How appropriately titled.

October 11th, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: Is there anything you can't throw away?
A: Character goods."
>>
>>282604997
Per Furinkan: "The game Rinne wins is "garapon" (ガラポン). Many stores have these wooden machines loaded with marbe sized balls in order to give away promotional prizes to their customers. Typically if you spend a certain amount in the store you get to turn the crank to see if you win a prize (denoted by getting a certain color ball)."

They also mention that Akane won it three times in Ranma 1/2. The price was obviously redrawn. The original Japanese referred to it as a シークレットツアー (shīkurettotsuā), so loanword from "secret tour" in English. VIZ changed it since it doesn't quite sound correct in English for this sort of thing.
>>
>>282605058
He did it.
>>
>>282605096
Rokumon just said "I'll be home alone" in Japanese (ぼくは留守番ですね。). And Rinne mentioned that they were ペアチケット (pea chiketto), a loanword from pair tickets. This is more clear though.

And yes, Rokumon did say デート (dēto) to refer to it being like a date.
>>
>>282605187
The bus was labelled with a big bloody "anoyo" with English letters in the original Japanese as well. You probably know by now that あの世 (anoyo) means "the other world" and refers to the afterlife.
>>
>>282604959
IT'S TIME
>>282604997
>Q: Is there anything you can't throw away?
>A: Character goods.
she has a whole floor for that
>>
>>282605235
>>282605235 (You)
Furinkan notes that "The older people on the tour bus are eating dried squid, known as "surume" (スルメ) in Japanese."

Though the bag you can see here says せんべい (senbei), which means rice crackers.
>>
>>282605328
Oh how lovely.
>>
>>282605340
Hesitation is defeat.
>>
>>282605355
This definitely appeals to me.
>>
>>282605382
Lot of great luxuries in that third panel.
>>
>>282605401
He's been had.
>>
>>282605413
This was a chapter title drop in the original Japanese. いつもの感じ (itsumo no kanji). Though, Rinne did phrase it as a question with か.
>>
>>282605523
The parenthetical was much shorter in Japanese and referred to the fish as 成仏寸前の (jōbutsu sunzen). As in, on the verge of attaining enlightenment or nirvana.
>>
>>282605586
Boundary stone was 境界石 (kyōkai ishi). This does translate to boundary stone and is the same term for boundary that is used in the Japanese title of the manga (境界のRINNE, Kyoukai no Rinne, Rinne of the Boundary) and refers to the boundary between life and death.

And they explicitly flowed down from the Sanzu River in Rinne's line here. And yes, VIZ is still going with River Styx for the Sanzu River given the similarities.
>>
>>282605413
Devious
Devilish, even
>>
>>282605644
How they get you.
>>
>>282605663
>>
>>282605679
Their tour has ended.
>>
>>282605695
End of chapter. Yes, Sakura Mamiya used the term いつもの感じ again here like in the title of the chapter. The little "Sakura" tag was written with English letters in the original manga as well, interestingly.
>>
October 18th, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: Is there a part-time job you'd like to try?
A: Ruins excavation."
>>
>>282605787
The little sign in the second panel was redrawn, obviously.
>>
>>282605802
VIZ went with EE here for "Exorcism Exam", which makes some sense. Rinne shortened in his his speech bubble too, saying "浄検 (浄霊検定)" including the parenthetical. It is pronounced jō ken (jōrei kentei), so you can see how the shortening works.

We saw an image of Ebisu briefly before in Rin-ne. Now, we see Daikokuten (大黒天). This covers everything you need to know, but feel free to look up more if you are curious. The Seven Lucky Gods are an interesting thing in Japan and Rumiko has had a lot of references to them over the years.
>>
>>282605918
Yup, the little diagram was redrawn. The UP was written in English letters in the original too though.
>>
>>282605937
He lived the dream?
>>
>>282605962
Not quite...
>>
>>282605974
Furinkan's note here says: "The humor in this chapter centers around the fact that there is a "big black spot" (大黒点) on the painting of Daikokuten (大黒天). In Japanese, "big black spot" is also pronounced "daikokuten"."

I don't know if it is explicitly called a 大黒点 though, as Rokumon's line here referred to it as シミ (shimi) which means stain.
>>
>>282606028
>>
>>282606038
Minor recap.
>>
>>282606095
>>
>>282606105
In the original, Rinne's line in the second panel was just a very large 大繁盛 (dai hanjō) which means "great prosperity" or "great success".
>>
>>282606124
How nice.
>>
>>282606137
The little label in the package was redrawn.
>>
>>282606159
Oh!
>>
>>282604959
It's almost over...
>>
>>282606174
This does appear to be the same contract we see in Chapter 7, though we did not get as clear a shot of it in that one and the main text of the contract was just placeholder lines. Here, it seems Rumiko actually wrote the content of the contract and VIZ decided to redraw it in English. I have no idea how they managed given how much of it is covered up by the big VOID stamp.

I can't really get Google Lens to play along with the somewhat faint scans I have of this contract in Japanese, but what it did read did not appear to have 2009 in it. 2009 would be appropriate though, as this was when chapter 7 was published in Japanese. Maybe VIZ was making the reference rather than Rumiko.
>>
>>282606325
How greedy.
>>
>>282606351
>>
>>282606360
End of chapter. Oh no.
>>
Original title was 掛け軸の罠 (kakejiku no wana). Means what it says here, but I just figured I'd mention the term for hanging scroll used here.

October 25th, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: What side dish would make you happy in your bento box?
A: Fried shrimp."

it'd be funny if somebody started to catch the fish with their bare hands though hehe
>>
>>282606537
The term Tamako used here was えらい物件 (erai bukken). 物件 means property, thing or object. えらい means great, important, etc. but it can also mean awful or terrible. I guess it means both in this context, hence the translation.
>>
>>282606589
Furinkan has a note here: "Daikokuten's mallet is quite special in Japanese folklore. It is known as "uchide no kozuchi" (打ち出の小槌) or "striking out little hammer". It is said that the hammer can cobble together anything that the user wishes for, though as a downsize whatever it creates usually disappears with the tolling of a bell."
>>
>>282605355
huh thats interesting
its true, I don't remember the last time, if ever, I saw Rinne in any kind of vehicle
>>
>>282606351
Fatkumon...
>>
>>282606598
By the way, the caption on the previous page did refer to it as a 打ち出の小槌 (uchide no kozuchi). Magic mallet is a common translation of it though.

And here's another Furinkan note, though Tamako has it covered: "Part of Daikokuten's iconography are the mice or rats that are typically shown accompanying him. This is due to his evolution from the Hindu god "Mahakala". He was associated with the northern direction which, in the Chinese zodiac, is the sign of the rat. The mice come to serve as Daikokuten's messengers."
>>
>>282605723
ominous ending...
>>
>>282606609
Wasn't there that one ghost that was stuck riding the bus? He got sick that time as well, from what I remember.
>>
>>282606660
Hm. Probably had some bitterness despite it all.

The term for forced exorcism is 強制浄霊 (kyōsei jōrei).
>>
>>282606715
A logical means of attack.
>>
>>282606733
Got them both.
>>
>>282606744
The insults hurled at Rinne here were 薄情者ーっ守銭奴ーっ (kakujō-sha ̄ sshusendo ̄ ~tsu) and 金の亡者ー (kin no mōja ̄) both of which seem to have been appropriately translated "cold-hearted miser" and "money grubber".
>>

>>282606820
The sign at the top was redrawn (except for DVD and CD). The Rinne was not.

>>282606830
End of chapter. Rokumon got taiyaki.
>>
>>282606325
>I have no idea how they managed given how much of it is covered up by the big VOID stamp.
Maybe they had access to the original manuscripts without the void stamp. That kind of thing happens.
>>
>>282606685
Oh you're right, I kinda remember that.
>>
Original title was 日頃の行い (higoronookonai). This appears to mean "daily behavior" and refers to things that become a habit or routine for a person.

November 1st, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: I don't like the smell of ginko in autumn. Is there any smell that you hate?
A: Coriander."

>>
>>282606929
>>
>>282606940
Term for cherished memory was 大切な思い出 (taisetsuna omoide).

>>282606931
I thought that too when she mentioned it before, but I wouldn't think it would affect the smell, right?
>>
>>282606981
Her insults here were バカ (baka) for idiot and 金の亡者 (kin no mōja) for money-grubber.
>>
>>282607000
That... can't be good.
>>
>>282607011
>>
>>282606786
Wait a sec, you can just force the exorcism, and that easily too? Do you fail the exam if you force it? Or is Rinne just that good at exorcising that exorcising a level 1 easily is something he can do where most others might fail?
lots to unpack here
>>
>>282607020
Seems like this was also another chapter title drop that VIZ avoided due since it would probably end up being unnatural sounding. Rinne asked if this was because of his 日頃の行い (higoronookonai) or "daily behavior" and the narrator confirmed that this was the cause of it.
>>
>>282607085
I'm glad some of the misunderstandings get cleared up before they become too painful.

>>282607061
He has forced it before, for evil spirits. He seems to view it as a last resort in a way that other shinigami don't. It does seem like it is pretty hard to do normally and it may have resulted in him failing the exam.

I'm more curious about how Rokumon managed to pawn something to a store in the real world.

$267 probably had more spending power then too.

Yeah, Bishamonten and Ebisu have pretty big roles in Noragami.
The seven Lucky Gods were also in one of Ranma's movies(filler).

I did recognize the teapot, oddly enough.

I did too, kinda. Because of that shot with the wallet girl coming into his room from a couple volumes ago, it was very detailed panel of that section of the room.

Was confused by the mallet being a scythe too. Part of me thinks it was from the original commission a bit of the old guy bitterness about being alone, would make sense why he wanted to admire it maybe. And if you commission something like that you might want to customize it.

>>
>>282607705
So, I think "the dry riverbed of the River Styx" is probably not the best way to translate that. What was being referred to in the original was the 賽の河原 (sai no kawara) or "River-plain of the Dead". This is apparently another part of the Sanzu River myth, so it refers to the coast of a river, not a dry riverbed. This riverbank is apparently where souls of children who died before their parents congregate. The stone towers represented here are made to pray for salvation.

Also, this page on the topic of the Sai no Kawara also discusses boundary stones, so I guess those are a real thing in myth too.
>>
>>282607820
Good question, Rinne. Really good question. Also, he can't just go and steal a different bracelet...

Of course, this is in-character for him.

Yeah, the last little happy note for Ayumi and Jumonji was what we got. Rumiko does talk about it in an interview, but don't expect too much. I'll be posting two interviews after the dump. Maybe just portions of it? I'll see how much I can fit in a few posts.

Thanks OP, always appreciate these threads. I had a chance to see some of Rumiko's work at an exhibit nearby which included a page or two from Rinne, it's real lovely stuff. I can share a pic I took once you're done with the dump.

Fitting in the recap in normal panels.
>>
this volume is the longest plotline rin-ne has ever had
>>
>>282608183
why does it say "that world" and "this world"? Viz shenanigans? It made it confusing
>>
>>282608242
死神青年部 (Shinigami seinen-bu) was used here. I don't know the difference between this and 死神青年会 (shinigami seinen-kai). Here, it is being translated as Shinigami Boys Club again rather than Shinigami Boys and Girls Club, despite it being for both. Shinigami Youth Association is probably most accurate.
>>
>>282608183
A double-cross!
>>
>>282608289
Problem solved.

>>282608275
Oh, of all the times to translate この世 (konoyo) and あの世 (anoyo) more literally. この世 (konoyo) means "this world". This is a direct counterpart to a あの世 (anoyo), which means "the other world" and refers to the afterlife both in this series and in general.

VIZ did mess it up though. The original diagram had it say anoyo (afterlife) -> konoyo (mortal world) on the left and anoyo <- konoyo on the right. VIZ messed up by making the middle afterlife, which is obviously isn't. This is two different diagrams.
>>
>>282608389
The usual convenient placement of spirit ways and other connections between the worlds.
>>
>>282608406
Per Furinkan: "The lanterns Kain carries is called "chochin" (提灯). The message written on it says "goyou" (御用) which is akin to "official business", "arrest" or "submit to authority"."

Whoops. And yeah, the sign was redrawn.

Nah, it's when things begin to become routine
>>
Original title was もうひとつの境界石 (mō hitotsu no kyōkai ishi) which can also be translated as "another boundary stone".

November 22nd, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: What's something that has made you ask, "does this only happen in my hometown?"
A: Niigata's "Italian" gourmet is not nationwide."

I wonder if this place still is open. Like, if you visited it regularly, would you be able to spot her? She mentioned it quite a lot.

Original title was さよなら六道くん (sayonara rokudō-kun). So, yes, a definitive goodbye (though it can be used in other ways, I think it is pretty clear which one this is).

November 29th, 2017. Author's note:
"Q: I like kimchi nabe. Do you have a favorite nabe?
A: Yosenabe."

Nabe are Japanese hot pot dishes. Yosenabe is cooking everything in a pot together, so meat, seafood, egg, tofu, vegetables, the works.
>>
>>282609391
The term used was 別れる (wakareru) which does mean to break up or separate.
>>
>>282609417
In the interest of completeness, here is the entirity of Rinne's letter and what he said to Rokumon here in Japanese:

真宮桜へ今まで世話になったありがとう。六道りんね (Shingū sakura e imamade sewa ni natta arigatō. Rokudō rin'ne)

So, something like "Thank you to Sakura Mamiya for all your help. Rinne Rokudo". As for what he said to Rokumon, it was:

書いてある通りだ。真宮桜にそう伝えておけ。 (Kaitearu-dōrida. Shingū sakura ni sō tsutaete oke.)

So, something like "It's exactly as it says. Tell that to Mamiya Sakura." So, it was curt rather than explicitly mean, obviously. VIZ did fine.

I checked Kain's language last page, but it seems the translation is pretty direct. Admittedly, greeting someone with a shove and おい (oi or "hey!") is pretty rude regardless.

Kain hasn't been nearly as unkind to Rinne as he previously has been. During the exam part, I thought about how he seemed genuinely impartial when Rinne requested the Level 1.

I honestly feel VIZ did fine with the caption box in the first panel, even if it isn't quite a direct translation. The original was どことなく別れっぽかったのだ。(Dokotonaku wakare ppokatta noda.) which appears to mean "It felt a bit like a breakup."

And hey, they translated この世の豆知識 correctly for the little trivia caption rather than just having it say "Helpful Trivia". The expression referenced was 金の切れ目が縁の切れ目 (Kanenokiremegaen'nokireme) which means exactly what it says here.

Original title was 輪廻の輪 (Rin'ne no wa). This does mean Wheel of Reincarnation. Reminder, Rokudo Rinne is written as 六道 りんね in Japanese, so his first name is actually written in Hiragana rather than kanji like the word reincarnation here.

Oh, I think I see what happened with Sakura Mamiya's line in the "third" panel here. Sakura Mamiya said 誰ひとりボケない・・ (dare hitori boke nai). ボケ is boke, which can refer to Alzheimer's (impolitely) in some cases or to being out of it. This seems to be what VIZ thought was happening, hence "lost his memory". But that's not what Rumiko was going for. She's referring to ボケ as in, the funny person in a comedy duo. Like the boke-tsukkomi routine. Basically, none of them decided to make a joke after such a serious thing.

End of chapter, end of volume, end of series. Sakura Mamiya's final line here was しょうがないなあ (Shōganai nā) which appears to mean "Can't be helped." That's Rin-ne. I did it.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Thursday to dump Volume 1 of MAO. If you have not read, MAO, I highly recommend you join me. MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's return to more serious writing after doing the episodic comedy of Rin-ne. I would say the tone is closer to Mermaid Saga and her horror one-shots than most of her other major series. MAO is an ongoing series however and currently, there are only 21 volumes officially released in English. As such, I am switching schedules from twice a week (Wed and Sat) to once a week (Thursday). As for what I am going to do once I run out of officially released MAO, I don't know.

With Rin-ne complete, I've officially dumped all of Rumiko Takahashi's completed series as well as sixty-some of her one-shots. That is Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Saga, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha and Rin-ne. Oh and Dust Spot. I started this project almost two years ago and I never expected to get this far. Thank you to everyone who has ever read any of my storytimes. I don't know if anyone has been here since the beginning, but if you have, you might be as crazy as me. I don't want to act like I won an Academy award, but I feel I also have to thank Furinkan for all the information they've provided as these storytimes would have been a much duller affair without their thankless work. And of course, you know I love Rumiko Takahashi's work.

Thanks, OP. Gotta be honest this closure fucking SUCKED, Rinne didn't deserve such a lame last chapter. Rumiko is a really big offender of mishandled endings, so make an episodic series with slim to none progression, which is perfectly fine, but then at the end proceed to throw some continuity shoving every other character as if they "need" to appear in the middle of an irrelevant couple angle? Fucking dumb, it was never a real thing in the series aside something entitely secondary at best.

A better ending would've been releasing Rokudo from his poorfag debts and all the chain effects to other characters IMO but apparently Rinne only has to suffer in that aspect. At least you survived OP

Thank you, OP. Not the most exciting ending, perhaps, but a fine ending for this series, I think. Despite the general lukewarm reaction it gets around here I've always been fond of Rinne, so it was nice to read through the whole thing again (although I didn't remember the official translation being quite so slipshod.) It's nice reading something so unabashedly dry every now and then.
I'll be looking forward to Mao! I'm going to work hard on getting my mystery timeline chart in order so I can update it as the storytime progresses.

7. I've actually been following along since the start of the UY threads, so the magnitude of your work is not lost on me. I remember posting and you replying early on, but I eventually started taking more of a lurker's role by the middle of Ranma. Including the Furinkan notes and all the magazine questions made it a very thorough experience. You are only really rivaled by the One Piece storytimer in terms of your dedication. I literally graduated from university in the time since you first started, and I've gained a lot of appreciation and love for Rumiko's works. Feels strange that we're all caught up with the completed series. Will see you next Thursday.

My personal rankings:
1. Urusei Yatsura
2. Ranma 1/2
3. Maison Ikkoku
4. One Pound Gospel
5. Rin-ne
6. Mermaid Saga
7. Inuyasha

Caught up on finished Rumic series, MAO on Thursdays. Thanks for reading.
>>
>>282611894
Thanks a lot OP. That was lots of fun.
It was pretty good final arc. I was really hoping Rinne would stop being poor though. Also I don't really know if their relationship is really all that defined by Rinne borrowing money from Sakura for it to be the note the series ends on. It was really just a sometimes thing. Kinda does Rinne dirty, he's a good boy for the most part and the most upstanding of her MCs thus far.
But overall it was great, I liked the tone of it compared to the other series. Very comfy read. And I still love Sakura and think she is the cutest.
>>
>>282612194
I will but I get the impression anon quoting pretty much every page with unfunny remarks is going to have a lot of work keeping them alive lol
>>
>>282612211
By MCs I really mean the thus far 5 major series. I mean, Mermaid Saga MC doesn't really have any faults and is an upstanding guy. One Pound Gospel guy wasn't so bad either iirc.

Let's see how much of the Rin-ne long interview I can fit in a post. Can't seem to fit too much. Going to be a lot of posts.

"[Q]: This time, in the last of our long interviews, we'll be asking about Kyokai no RINNE and the Mermaid Saga. First of all, with regard to Kyokai no RINNE, it seems like after finishing the serious, lengthy work Inuyasha, you wanted to draw a manga that went in a slightly different direction.

Takahashi: That's right. Rhythm is a big part of weekly magazine serialization, so I find it a bit suffocating as a creator to make serious stories one after another. So even with MAO, which I'm currently drawing, I think that's a large part of the reason that the manga that I'm drawing now has this kind of vibe, because Kyokai no RINNE was a manga that had the kind of vibe it did as well. Also, I wanted to draw things like "school" and "seasons" that I hadn't been able to draw much in Inuyasha.

[Q]: Furthermore, have you ever wanted to do a manga like Takahashi's School Ghost Stories?

Takahashi: Oh, of course: one complete story.

[Q]: Also, although there are many "Shinigami manga" in the world, I felt that the image of a "good Shinigami" depicted in this work was new. Aside from the damashigami, Rinne and the others are righteous beings who guide lost spirits.

Takahashi: I've always believed that that is what a shinigami is supposed to be. They're not scary beings that appear in front of healthy people and forcibly take them to the afterlife. Yes, there is a frightening image of a skullface with a big sickle, but I have a stronger impression of shinigami as a navigator who takes the souls of the dead to the other world. After all, they are a kind of god, so they are supposed to be there to save people (laughs)."

"[Q:] On my first reading, I was immediately taken by the visual of the Wheel of Reincarnation in the first chapter. Where did you get that seemingly mechanical, yet Japanese-style visual?

Takahashi: That is inspired by the wheel of a imperial carriage. I made it huge (laughs). I didn't draw the inside to make it look mysterious, but I think it would be fun for readers to imagine the interior.

[Q:] I think it is a style of manga in which you, Takahashi-sensei, depict the main male character from the point of view of a narrator girl is a style in which you seems to have a monopoly, and with this series you especially make the most of that charm.

Takahashi: I think it is largely because I'm a woman, but it's difficult to advance a story with only the boy's perspective. So, even if I were to create a hero, I would feel more comfortable if I depicted him not only from his own perspective, but also from the perspective of the heroine, who is almost the same level as him as the main character.

[Q:] Let me ask you about the heroine, Sakura. She is interested in Rinne, but doesn't show much romantic interest until the middle of the story.

Takahashi: It's not even in the middle, but it's around the final chapter that she clearly realizes her feelings (laughs). I feel like I dragged it out too much, but I thought the story wouldn't end if I didn't draw it her recognizing her feelings, so I drew it."

Second to last chapter, honestly.

"[Q:] Rinne is forced to work as a shinigami due to his grandmother's quota and his father's debt, but he doesn't really feel forced to do it.

Takahashi: I guess he's a serious person at heart (laughs). Even if you don't take quotas or debts into consideration, he probably has the blood of a shinigami in him and wants to properly send lost spirits to the Wheel of Reincarnation.

[Q:] Sakura realizes that he is a "kind shinigami" relatively early on, but it's also nice that Rinne continues to address her by her full name, "Sakura Mamiya," until the end.

Takahashi: One of the techniques for characterization is how the characters address one another, but since I lost the chance to change the way he addresses Sakura (laughs), I had to stick with it through to the end. But I think I was able to depict the awkwardness that a boy has for a girl that he likes.

[Q:] Also, what I've always liked about not only Takahashi-sensei's manga, but Shonen Sunday manga in general, is that they properly depict families. In a sense, this work can be read as "the story of Rinne's family," but the first thing that stands out to me is his grandmother, Tamako.

Takahashi: I wanted a character who could help Rinne when he was in a pinch, so I thought that in this case, a grandmother would be a good choice."
>>
>>282606830
wtf!
>>
>>282612771
"[Q:] On the other hand, Tamako's son, (Rinne's father) Sabato, is also a strong character. They say he's good-looking yet garbage (laughs). However, I was still impressed by the great character development that made it hard to completely hate him.

Takahashi: What he's doing is really trashy (laughs). But I had a lot of fun drawing that scumbag. There aren't many villains or enemy characters in Kyokai no RINNE, so I had no choice but to have Sabato play that role.

[Q:] Also, as I was reading the story, I was wondering why Rinne's mother didn't appear, but she makes an impactful appearance towards the end.

Takahashi: As for Rinne's mother, I had been thinking about bringing her into the story, but I had a hard time finalizing her character, and she ended up appearing only at the end of the story. When I came up with the idea of her being reincarnated and being younger than Rinne, I thought I had done it (laughs). As you know, this family usually lives separately, but in one of the last chapters, there was a story about a family trip that ended up happening, albeit by accident."
>>
>>282612771
huh is that a Shonen Sunday thing? I'll have to ponder about this
but its true families can be very absent from manga, I always enjoy when MCs and stuff have family members. I honestly think it's stupid that manga have their parents missing so often, whether explicitly (they left their kid home alone for years because they're "overseas" for "work") or they just literally never show up

Last bit of the interview related to Rin-ne. I probably am not going to post the other interview in full, but I'll link it. I've posted bits of it already.

"[Q:] As usual in this series, I think all the other supporting characters are appealing, but do you have a favorite character?

Takahashi: I drew all the contracted black cats thinking they were cute, but Rokumon was my favorite. The mascot characters I've drawn so far, whether it's Ten or Shippo, tend to interact with the main character, but I think it's cute that Rokumon obediently serves Rinne. Other than that, I think the devil Masato was also a very interesting character (laughs).

[Q:] Also, I think the reason why this manga is interesting is because it neatly depicts the concepts of "work" and "money". Because earning money means working in society, which is one of the most important things in life. I think it's good that this manga teaches this lesson to boys who will later enter the workforce.

Takahashi: I didn't have such a grandiose sense of mission (laughs), but there was definitely a part of me that was obsessed with the importance of money. I included that in the last line of Sakura's speech at the end of the series. Also, my previous work, Inuyasha, was a rather grandiose story that expanded into a big epic, so it was fun to make RINNE a complete story that was more episodic and bite-sized."

Here's the interview Rumiko did after Rin-ne was done. I'll post a bit I am certain I didn't post before as they pertain to the end of the series. There's a lot more interesting stuff in this interview, feel free to check it out if interested. This just makes me laugh. https://www.furinkan.com/takahashi/takahashi22.html

"Was there any aspect you realized or enjoyed about the relationship between Kain and Renge that you would like to share with us?

Takahashi: Renge has a pure side. She likes Kain in an honest way and doesn’t want anyone else to know. Also, she turned out to be a girl with a wide range of reactions. Kain is indifferent to love. For that reason, Renge is working at Kain’s office, but from that point on, I have no clue. I liked them because I could draw them in a tender way to my liking.

The relationship between Matsugo and Anju finally had some development in the 38th volume, what will happen to them?

Takahashi: I have no idea.

I am also curious about the future for Jumonji and Ayame Sakaki. Will Ayame Sakaki continue leaving her body as a living spirit?

Takahashi: Same as before, I don’t know. I didn’t reach a conclusion for that relationship. I’ll leave it to the readers’ imagination (laughs).

Will Bijin, the secretary, continue working for Sabato without learning anything? To tell you the truth, I laughed when it was revealed that her real name was “Beauty”.

Takahashi: I don’t know about that either. Regarding Bijin’s name, I was determined to give her a different one since she showed up, but it remained unchanged... I decided when she was introduced in a chapter that it would stay that way."

Happy to have you. Thanks for reading. Speaking of level-headed protagonist, I like this line from the post Rin-ne interview:

"Q13. The romantic relationship between Rinne and Sakura was a point of interest for readers. Rinne was always trying to understand Sakura’s feelings, which were difficult to decipher through her facial expressions. When the two were in a situation similar to a date, Sakura said smiling sincerely, “That would be nice,” which was cute. Was there something that you realized or that you enjoyed after having drawn that scene?

Takahashi: I didn’t know what Sakura was thinking, and Rinne probably didn’t either. So when he felt nervous about her, I did too. I enjoyed him not being able to read her feelings until the last chapter. Also, since both of them had no love rivals, the development of their relationship depended on only themselves. There were no big changes. I had fun when I drew them since there weren’t any couples similar to them thus far."

Even though I haven't read any other Rumiko manga, I have watched all anime adaptations of her works. My personal ranking of the long-running stories would be:

Eventually, I will get around to at the very least reading the first three.
Oh, and even though I placed Inuyasha in last place, it did, in a way, leave its impact on me, in that Kohaku turned me into a shotacon. Definitely not the intended impact, but oh well.

>THURSDAY
THURSDAY
>MAO is an ongoing series however and currently, there are only 21 volumes officially released in English.
the manga is also being officially simulpubbed by viz and updates every tuesday
https://www.viz.com/vizmanga/chapters/mao
>As for what I am going to do once I run out of officially released MAO, I don't know.
wait for mao to finish to truly complete the rumicworld storytime duh
(also transition to weekly anime threads considering the volume dumping storytime will end a little before the anime airs)
>That is Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Saga, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha and Rin-ne. Oh and Dust Spot.
anon i think you missed one
>>282612015
>I actually don't have either the back cover or inner sleeve illustration.
so they didn't let you have it even at the end...

also let's give a thank you to the chinese who have been a source for inner sleeve illustrations for quite a while now, and a source for a few color pages when there were no others available
fortunately mao is recent enough (and i suppose liked enough?) that over the years as sites that post raws come and go, mao's magazine raws keep being uploaded on to these sites so we're set for color pages
and later on when the viz simulpubs begin, we'll even have cleaned up color pages

Thank you anon, I actually followed Ranma and Rinne, skipping Inuyasha, but I'll be waiting for MAO.
Also more of a open ending than fucking Ranma.
I still enjoyed Rin-ne quite a bit.
>>
>>282612940
If there's one thing Rin-ne does better than the other Rumiko's mangas is the mascot.
Rokumon is much more adorable than Ten or Shippo(who's Ranma's mascot Panda Genma or P-chan?)
>>
>>282605168
>Do you have a similar compilation for the first 20 volumes?
not at all dog, i only did that as a sidequest while i was in the archives to complete the smol kitty rokumon report for the second half of the series

I love mao and its nice to see a non comedy rumiko manga, but the "modern girl meeting magical/historical characters" is wearing a little thin.

I'd say P-chan if you really need to pick one, but he almost feels like a parody of the concept, to be honest. As far as mascots go I'm tied between Rokumon and Otoya, although Rokumon has the edge in that he's an actual character with a lot of agency in the story.

Seems to be promotion for this artbook coming out on Wednesday
I just happened to see it, and it is relevant so I figured I would share
I didn't even know about the book though. Looks very nice from the pictures.

Thanks! As a big Rumic manga fan, I do highly recommend you check out the manga for those other series. It is great stuff.
