Just watched this with my kids tonight. I don't know a lot about the production of the English dub of Pokemon but you can tell they were tripping over themselves to shoehorn in a bunch of "FIGHTING IS LE BAD" messaging in a series that's 50% animal poaching and 50% cockfighting.

You don't have kids

You've got to understand Pokemon was under a LOT of fire in the late 90s for being violent/satanic. The first Pokemon movie would be the first time a lot of parents actually sat down and watched the thing in any meaningful capacity.

So they needed to make it very, VERY clear that the big tragic brawl at the end wasn't meant to be glorifying violence, so they added that extra moralizing to hammer in that it was meant to come across as senseless and hard to watch. Not that it's what Pokemon normally is.

Also Takeshi Shudo's stupid pothead philosophizing about God obviously wasn't going to make it into the movie for the same reason.

I see a lot of people bitching about the "Ash dies" scene not matching what is implied in the Japanese version but the explanation I saw for the Japanese version doesn't make much sense either.

Because the paragraphs look much longer in the reply box.

There's no explanation in the Japanese version. It just happens.

A reminder that, in the original Japanese, Mew was just as hateful of clones as Mewtwo was for originals.

>pokemon battles are explicitly a combat sport, like MMA
>there are rules and referees and medical experts on standby
>movie shows two "god-like" beings settling their philosophical dispute by making two groups of MMA fighters beat each other to death
>onlookers claim that the situation is out of control and morally wrong
Seems about right to me.

Larping retard. Reddit spacing is when you double space after single lines. Writing a paragraph and then separating it from the next paragraph is called being legible.

It's not MEANT to have some kind of natural explanation. They do a repeat of it in the 20th movie too, as one of many callbacks to early Kanto stuff, and it doesn't make any more "sense" there either

That was the original, the dub changed Mew and Mewtwo to unquestionably good and bad guys and then really really hammered in the entire "fighting is wrong" thing to the point it sounded hypocritical as fuck.
>>
Pokemon overall has an issue with the nature of the monsters themselves. Originally, I was under the impression that they all had an inclination to fight unless stated otherwise. They may look like actual animals that indeed did exist alongside them, but they weren't, they were clearly aberrations to the norm. Then somewhere along the line they forgot the plot and now everything is Pokemon, no real animals whatsoever, and now they're much more peaceful beings, which all of a sudden clashes with why battling happened so much in the first place. Of course, this wouldn't have curbed the pearl clutchers back then as most of them were totally ignorant of them being battle-hungry monsters in the first place, but now things are so different that there's this constant nagging issue underlying battling. Long story short, we need to go back.

>>282609357
That's just how the early anime and first couple movies were. It was its own thing and didn't follow a strict formula.

I can't tell if this is based or not at all. Unimaginative comes to mind first really.

i only remember old kid me thought it was awful, and i loved pokemon back then.

The entire point of the movie is that it's a retelling of the Kanto arc with a new Houhou-centric plot tying it all together.
>>
>>282609357
The dub also cuts out Mewtwo's tragic backstory. I guess they didn't want to make him more sympathetic? Too intense for kids?

Gamefreak really put themselves in a corner with this. Some years ago, they tried to come up with the excuse that Pokemon want to fight because it's a way for them to become strong and evolve. So every time a wild Pokemon attacks a trainer in the grass it's the creature basically going "let's fight so I will get a lot of EXP!" and you catching it isn't seen as a bad thing, since you will actually help it become even stronger thanks to the power of friendship. It's senseless and childish as fuck.

To be fair, Tajiri or someone else (can't remember who exactly) did say that we shouldn't judge the people of the pokemon world as normal humans. He literally used the word "aliens" to refer to them, because their actions and customs are really different compared to ours. While catching cute critters with special abilities and powers and building a whole "fighting society" around them is normal over there, here it would be seen as barbaric.

The scene is on Youtube for everyone to watch, and it's clearly just footage made up for the trailer, as is the norm for Japanese Pokemon trailers. The little girl and the woman are the singers of the song playing in the trailer, and Misty is there because she's narrating the trailer. The movie was always meant to take place before the league, so it wouldn't make sense to put an epilogue in it.
>>
>>282618402
Why is Misty grown up in it and why does the little girl have Ash’s Pikachu then?
>>
>>282618503
Because the song is about the duality between being a little girl who wants to grow up and an adult woman who wants to return to her childhood.
>Ash's Pikachu
Headcanon. The lyrics of the song suggest that it's the grown woman's Pikachu.

It makes sense in a Buddhism context of the human and animal realms. Pokemon aren't quite on the human level, they have basic motivations. Partnering with humans fulfills their hierarchy of needs and more. They are not self-actualized or ambitious, but they can enjoy serving a higher purpose and reaching their maximum potential.

The Pokémon anime was already decided to be a long running series before the script for ''Mewtwo Strikes Back'' was even written.
>>
>>282617249
While the dub writers admitted that they made Mewtwo more evil for the dub because they thought his motives in the Japanese version wouldn’t work for American kids, the whole birth of Mewtwo part wasn’t in the original theatrical release in Japan. Granted by the time the movie was localized there had already been several releases of the movie in Japan that had the birth of Mewtwo included.
>>
>>282618402
From what I remember of Shudo talking about his plan for the movie it was going to have Ash be much older and have him think back to the adventure he had involving Mewtwo and by the end he would reach some conclusion about what he really wanted and enjoyed from being a Pokemon trainer before passing away.

I dont think most realize this, but the original theatrical release of the first pokemon film was altered in its animation prior to its release. The one you see for most home releases is a Kanzenban. Basically it was promoted for the release of the Lugia film on TV as a special edition of the film. More CGI and redraws of scenes. The only way to see an original theatrical recording is through an early VHS or LaserDisc release. Here's a picture of a scene from the original. Where are the Pokemon? It looks like they became ash.
