I just watched ghost in the shell 1995 on criterion. what other parts of the GitS franchise are worth watching?
>>
>>282612070
The manga.
>>
>>282612070
That’s it just that one, it’s a masterpiece that needs no sequels or spinoffs.
>and the live action film was trash.
>>
>>282612105
I wouldn't recommend the manga if OP enjoyed the movie. There are too many differences between these two, both tonal and artistic.
>>282612070
Watch the next movie.

Stand alone complex is pretty good.
>>
>>282612070
The TV anime is the only worthwhile aspect of the franchise.
>>
>>282612162
The manga is more pulp. Movies are 2deep4u.
>>
>>282612070
all of it. even 2045

GITS: Stand Alone Complex season 1.

And nothing else!!!FACT!!!

>I just watched ghost in the shell 1995
Good, now you can watch the only good entry which is Stand Alone Complex.
>>
>>282612070
Manga and GitS Stand Alone Complex season 1. Seaon 2 is just lacking and everything after is just different and misses the point
>>
>>282612070
Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn is technically in the canon, but don't approach it until you learn more about Shirow Masamune and cyberpunk in general. Tank Police and Appleseed are incredible and Shirow Masamune works.

SAC and 2nd GIG. Don't listen to the 2nd GIG disparagers, it's just as enjoyable as S1 and has some kino backstories for the characters. That showdown between the Major and Saito is fucking awesome, I will accept no shit talking of that scene.

There's also a movie or two in the SAC era that's worth watching, can't remember their names, but worth it. The one where they encounter some kind of puppetmaster and the one where Batou jumps from a fucking antenna tower to defeat the hivemind of old boomers.
>>
>>282613923
I like S1 more than 2nd gig, but I do love how the main conflict in 2nd gig is that the government is such a massive hydra that no head knows what the other is up to and that they run into conflict with each other and have projects go sideways becoming a massive issue
>>
>>282613955
Besides the cliche that Gohda is comically evil because of how fucked up he looks, the ending scene where the JSDF jets buzz the American submarine will forever be in my top kino moments of any anime ever. It's just fucking COOL. Kabuki fucking throws her weight around finally, and the sappy love story where the Major finds out Kuze is her childhood friend from the hospital, her one and only soulmate and love interest is fucking KINO.
>>
>>282612070
The sequel is kino
>>
>>282613917
>Appleseed
do they shoot ARs and learn about hating bongolians?
>>
>>282613923
>The one where they encounter some kind of puppetmaster
that's the original film

>I wouldn't recommend the manga if OP enjoyed the movie.
Holy tourism.
Its like you are saying:
>dont watch Patlabor the series because Patlabor 2 is too tonally different.
The GITS manga inspired the Movie, the movie is good by itself but Oshii deviated from the manga by a lot, making something in his style (hardboiled). That, I think is a fair critique to Oshii, he takes material and then he shapes it into his own vision, and he made some good stuff, but those are not 1:1 adaptations, those are Manga IP: The movie (Oshii's cut)
The GITS manga offers well fleshed stories with well written characters, with understanding of how technology works (something most of the recent "sci-fi" or "cyberpunk" anime didnt get at all)
>>282612070
>what other parts of the GitS franchise are worth watching?
As a fan, I would say ALL OF IT. But you could start with
>the original GITS manga
>GITS 1.5 man machine interface
then
>GITS: Stand Alone Complex
>GITS: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
(There are condensed versions of those series, in OVA format, called The laughing man, and the individual eleven) just in case you are short on time, or wanting a refresher (at a later time) if you already saw the series
if you liked those 2, then the OVA
>GITS: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society
IF you liked the hardboiled tone of the original movie, then prioritize the watch of
>GITS 2: Innocence
Quick reminder / guide:
Innocence takes place in a timeline some years after the events of the first movie. Both are directed by Oshii.
Stand alone complex series take place in a timeline where the events of the puppet master never took place, so the mayor is alive and kicking.
>Arise
There is a series called ARISE that functions like a prequel of sorts. Some like it, some dont, the most divisive element, stupidly, is the art choices, mainly the mayor's design.

I actually just watched the 1995 movie and first season of stand alone complex and I really enjoyed both.
I have nothing else to contribute

SAC and SAC 2nd GiG are fantastic. The final 5 or so episodes of 2nd GIG are a little confusing since they info dump you about the motivations behind a certain characters actions.
SAC S1 is almost perfect, even the handful of filler episodes are good.

>ERRATA: GITS 1.5 is not man machine interface, its Human Error Processer
>GITS 1.5 Human Error Processer
why read this? i hear you ask, because many of the episodes of SAC and SAC 2nd gig are inspired by stories of GITS 1.5 manga
Some "lesser" GITS media:
>GITS 2 manga
Well, it didnt had the impact of GITS 1, and the series takes a turn to the esoteric, so, it didnt felt well integrated to some. Also, the author starts to show a change in artstyle more ecchi (increased sexuality).
>GITS SAC_2045
tales place after the events of GITS SAC series and OVA. The world, or some parts go to shit and some strange events start to occur, some events are so bizarre that some start thinking its acts of wizardry or even the occult. I sincerily think is worth watching if you are deep into the GITS world and find yourself hungry for more. The worst aspect of this "spinoff" is not the story, which I find fulfilling, but the animation lower quality (its argued that the budget for it we thin, or slashed during production).
>NETFLIX AGAIN
there is a project for, I think 2026 for a new anime, backed by netflix and animated by Science SARU, a respected animation studio.
>NOVELS
There are 3 novels based on the GITS SAC world written by Junichi Fujisaku. If you liked SAC I would recommend those. Interesting stories, well written, and those understood the worlbuilding so they dont feel out of place.
>GITS: The Human Algorithm
In fact those novels were so good that this manga is also written by Fujisaku. I havent read it all, as its slooooowly relaeased. but what I read is competent. I will keep tabs on it.
>GITS Global Neural network
I havent read this, the material is scarce.

>Pandora in the Crimson Shell:
No, just no. OP said whe wanted more of GITS. pandora is their own thing, which os not as good as GITS SAC or even the less liked GITS material. and if I may be so bold, bringing Pandora into a GITS thread, makes me dopubt of your sanity, unless you are talking from the other side of your gastric system.
>>
>>282614733
The movie
there are some other references but I dont remember exaclty. Also, in SAC, for what I can remember, she nor the S9 team need to get naked to use thermo-optical cammo.
yeah, we cant disassociate GIOTS and some innuendo, but if you are watching GITS just because you want T&A, there are loads of other anime that offers that.
>inb4 faggot
Liking GITS for the innuendo tts like saying you like mcdonalds for its machine served coke.

I recently started this show, it's good. I really don't know why barely anyone talks about it. So many sci-fi anime feel very disappointing because sci-fi is just used as a setting or backdrop to have flying cars and holograms but there's no real speculation about the future of technology and it's implications. Real Drive has been hitting that spot for me and did remind me of SAC so far. Sometimes it does seem a bit too ambitious and jumps back and forth a lot so I don't know if it can tie it together in the second half.
Also the girls are deliciously thick and have nice thighs. And somehow you get shown Minamo's panties every chance you get. I looked up the character designer and was devastated to find out this is the only anime he worked on.

None.

A lot of times this is only a good thing, and if more anime were like that instead of "minimum effort Manga IP: the anime commercial" we'd simply have a lot more good or at least interesting anime.
