A lot of that doesn't mean much without knowing how they got those numbers, and there's no point in trying to make everything fit some new format.

>>282616542>Breaking News! Weird Fag Holds Banner For Niche Korean Entertainment! More At 11!No one asked, no one cares. You could make the assertion that you enjoy such material, and you'd be relatively fine. But now you're making claims that can be easily disproven by looking literally anywhere anime and manga re discussed. No one's scared of losing profits. No one's murmuring in hushed tones about any supposed rising Korean monolith. Shit, name me ONE manhwa outside of Solo Leveling or Tower of God that a wider audience gives a shit about. Two shonen series and a gorillion romance slop series no one watches does NOT an industry make. Shit, I've seen more jabber about one-off novelty shows like Mahoako around the anime community (such as it is) than I have EVER seen about Solo Leveling- and Mahoako stopped airing early last year. If manhwa and webtoons want more eyes on them as media, then they'll have to do better than "I Am The Strongest Ever No Weaknesses Fox Only No Items Final Destination" as a premise.>Webtoons surpassed 100 billion views in 2023, with over 70% of traffic now coming from outside South Korea.Divide that by 365 days and you get ~274M pageviews daily. Assuming an average manhwa length of ~200 pages, that comes to around 1.3M readers, with approximately 910k of them being foreign readers as opposed to 390k domestic. These numbers might be impressive across ONE platform. But across multiple? Not so much. And none of these numbers equates to the $10.85Bn figure you've spat out, no source. The only way it makes sense is if you convert the dollars to won- which then translates from 10,850,000,00 won to $7,696,836.52. That's less than some K-pop groups make, even excluding domestic Korean sales. If your whole industry of writing wish fulfillment stories makes less money in the entire Southeast Asian region than a low-level restaurant owner with three joints in the Midwest, something's off.
>>282616900>>282616911The webtoon format can't fall into obscurity soon enough. I gave it a whirl with some of the more popular titles and the flaws of webtoon storytelling aside the very format is flawed. The panel structure that's optimized for endless scrolling, always scrolling, always moving on. There's no natural resting point for the story, no point to let the eye rest and take it all in. It's always structured to move on to the next thing. No clever paneling, since it's always about moving down, down, down, always keeping you in the flow. Reading Solo Leveling made my skin crawl after a while in how it's designed to be utter fast food. The artist was good, but it felt even if he wanted to, the endless scroll format wouldn't let him do actually cool stuff with paneling and composition. It feels more restrictive than, a (two) page based structure. It's like the webtoon format mimics the superficial nature of stories told through it. The sooner this bubble bursts, the better.

Riding on the global growth of the webtoon market, NHN had expanded its services to Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany, but has wrapped up all these operations since last year. According to the “2024 Webtoon Industry Survey” report by the Korea Creative Content Agency, the total sales of the domestic webtoon industry in 2023 recorded 2.189 trillion won. Although it exceeded 2 trillion won for the first time since records began, the industry is more concerned that the market will shrink from its peak in 2023, rather than being optimistic. In fact, the growth rate of the domestic webtoon market in 2023 (19.7%) has significantly decreased compared to 2021 (48.6%) and 2020 (64.7%). The number of works registered on domestic webtoon platforms as of last year also decreased by 6.7% to 18,792 from the previous year (20,141).

>>282623651webtoon is apparently in full enshittification mode to boost revenues, earlier this year they got rid of their free dailypass as they explore new avenues for increasing revenue.so obviously things aren't going so well if they're having to drop something like one free chapter a day to increase profits.
