This show was edgy and interesting at first, then it went full teddy bear mode. Toothless. Compare the first few episodes to everything after they UGUU~fied the titcow. The bugfucker didn't slaughter the townspeople. Barely anyone died during the war, certainly no not anyone important, and no gore or blood. No more scenes of slaughter or rape. It was fucking Disney+ levels of pussified. Nobody fucking died anymore except the villain. They just went hardcore edgy at the start to hook you, then it went soft and generic as fuck. Annoying.

easily the best of the season but was slept on by the average modern anime "fan" because it lacked the usual cheap thrills of self-insert isekai and shounen. sad.

The first ep's start was intense and it really interested me to where I picked up the manga. Manga started falling off at some point, and I dropped it at the school arc. Didn't watch the rest of the anime since I lost interest in the manga.
It's as you say, edgy and interesting start, then removes the facade and becomes a "normal" show. The ol' goblin hunter switch-a-roo. Just happened to keep the edge a bit longer.

Didn't understand the ending , can someone explain what the king and the cauldron did and why is it bad, why Clevatess upon hearing that lost interest in his original plan of ruling the kingdom behind the scenes , and what argument did the main heroine give as to why Clevatess should care again? Also, in the manga is it explained what the main antagonist , the beast that controlled the barbarians , wanted to do? Did the nortern beast also wish to take control of all the humans? If it wanted to destroy them it could do that on it's own.

I guess I'm different in that I'm not watching FOR random people getting merked. I'm not expecting it regularly. Rather I'm happy that the show is a telling a story were that stuff can and occasionally does happen. It's on the table as a consequence. That said, I do agree that some of the villagers probably should have gotten got by the bug mage though.

I'm anime only. But my understanding is the book/forge is/was inhabited by what seems to be a powerful entity from the old pre-Dark Lord world of the "True Humans" that was manipulating the Kings of Hiden for unrevealed purposes. Clevatess was dismayed because it more or less confirmed that the Dark Lords, himself included, were unwittingly manipulated to be part of and constrained by a system set up by those entities. This made him give into Nihilism and more or less say "what the fuck have I been doing for 1000 years?" and start just walking away. Alicia appealed to his interest in the spirit of humanity that had started him on this path in the first place and he decided that rather than retreating he would start actively shaping things himself. Vorden seems to have also been unhappy with the prophecy, the True Human stuff, and the idea that there was a power before/greater than the Dark Lords. But he simply decided to stamp out Hiden and any trace of that past. Clevatess at first isn't opposed, but then thanks to Alicia's appeal instead decided to see if he could guide/use Hiden and that power through Luna. We saw with Zafthier that the Dark Lords aren't opposed to using and coexisting with humans if it serves their purposes.

I never got the impression this was ever meant to be a "super grim dark" and "edgy", the PVs and even the first episode made it clear this was more or less an ordinary fantasy series, the first episode even had the main demon wolf MC adopt a baby, and have act tsundere towards it, even brining back one of the heroes as a servant for him specifcally because he doesn't know how to act "human" and needs her to do that.

I guess the show isn't bad, especially for those into what this is, but it's def not for me.

not him but I really liked Yuusha ga Shinda!, the anime is ok but the true scale of the story and setting only shows itself in the manga. It is already concluded with 20 volumes and for me it was one of those rare series that only get better the more you read. It seems like just a gag anime at the start so keep that in mind.

From what I can tell the ancient Toans, a near-humanoid race, used magic to isekai people from another world here to this one to act as heroes. These heroes awakened cheat skills and faced off against the Demon Beast Kings, but were defeated. Every time they'd die they'd just respawn elsewhere. Conditions in the city-state of Toa didn't improve, but the Demon Beast Kings couldn't push any further either. It was a stalemate.

Eventually the dragon Demon Beast King, Vordein, took human form to investigate the true nature of the isekai'd heroes. He met one named Wright, whose cheat abilities let him essentially conjure events into reality so long as people believe them. Wright wanted to improve conditions in the world, so he wrote a fictional book about a legendary hero that did shit like "received a revelation from God" and "awakened his cheat abilities" and "recieved a legendary weapon", split it into 5 different tomes, and incurred the tomes around the land. These tomes took different forms to invoke the events written within into reality, and the quality of heroes vastly improved.

The four Demon Beast Kings began to actually fall to the new generation of heroes, so Vordein stepped up his game to kill them all. His friend Wright was the last one he slew, and he entombed Wright within a mythical temple in tribute to the last true hero. A millennium passed, new Demon Beast Kings awoke, and the Toans passed on into history, leaving only humans left. No new isekai'd heroes appeared, and reality passed into legends as people forgot the books Wright wrote, them just becoming facets of their lives.

It's been a very boring millennium for both Vordein, and for Clevatess, who was born after that era ended. So now Vordein is collecting the Books of Toa and the scattered soul fragments of Wright passed on to other people to revive him and bring back that age of true heroism, so the Demon Beast Kings can feel alive again in battle.

Yeah, that was the Fifth Tome, which tells the story of the king giving the hero a legendary weapon. The book itself took form as the magical furnace that enthralled the royal family into forging legendary weapons and sending heroes off to battle the Demon Beast Kings.

Magic is also an old remnant of the cheat abilities the isekai'd heroes received, the abilities are re-awakened either artificially and implanted onto the body using those red crystals, or awakened through a Crest, a symbol of power that shows a person has passed the trial of the First Tome, which requires a person to face their own ugly insecurities and weaknesses.

Alicia is the first person in a thousand years to come as close to completing the journey of the True Hero as possible, she's completed the first, second, and fifth trials, letting her use two different Crest abilities while wielding a legendary weapon.

When Nell got brought back super hot/cute that's when I knew the series wasn't at all edgy or dark (she even got a cutesier name). I saw "dark fantasy!" thrown about a lot for this show but it's not accurate at all to call it that. It's typical "anime fantasy" for lack of a better term. Nell being brought back itself wasn't the issue, but a lot more darkness could've been established/preserved by making her keep her original form, maybe even get uglier/more revolting somehow. It's little things like this that could've been done to make the show truly dark fantasy. I suppose I'll watch season 2 since it's already being made but I definitely wouldn't have been curious at all to pick up the manga if it wasn't.

It was a comfy season. Hope new saga also gets a 2nd season. The soul was there, the OP was sick, the ED was relaxing and sweet, and the story has heart. I would give them budget if I could.
