2016 wasn't just a 4chan thing, it was when another huge wave of people started using the internet in general. This is why Trump won, he made the best use out of the new space. A similar wave happened around 2012, which is sometimes linked to Obama's second victory. Every 2-4 years we got a year where a bunch of new tech, big entertainment, political events, other phenomenon coincided. This caused a bunch of new people to flock to the internet either through it becoming more accessible or them having a reason to be drawn in. This all ended in 2020 when lockdowns pretty much forced every single person online. Now even boomers know about inflation porn and furries. Any time a crowd widens, you are likely to notice a shift in feeling whether good or bad. This crowd has widened immensely, which is why it seems like the internet has rapidly changed especially within this decade.

when was it that the point of posting in 4chan switched from just having fun banter like old friends meeting up and sharing some laughs to baiting people into reacting to stuff just to get some some dopamine kicks from the (you)s?
Back then it felt like people were more "brotherly" as fellow lonely nerds looking for people to discuss chinese cartoons with, there was an implicit camaraderie, anons always had their differences but there was this understanding that we were all the same deep down
Nowadays it's like everyone is hostile to each other, it's all about baiting, getting reactions and labelling people as XYZ to discredit them or assert some meaningless superiority, it's the complete opposite, like everyone sees the fellow anon as an enemy out to get them

Just not the same people, this place started out in a purer state but for every new anon you always get at least a dozen normalfags on top.
I don't really hold enmity towards normalfags (or towards anyone at all, really), just pity, but I do pine for the days of old, even if they're never coming back. Luckily, there are still some sparks of light here and there.

I blame a lot of it on unchecked mental illness, exacerbated by lockdowns and legalization and accessibility of drugs. Then this place being treated as a "safe space" for outright unpleasant people. Sometimes you'd post a word that triggers a schizofag and bam that thread and all future iterations are forever tainted.

>I do pine for the days of old, even if they're never coming back.
I used to, but not so much anymore. /a/ was my first board, but I only come by once in a while nowadays because of the weird zoomer panic against lolicons and whatnot, and the repetitive arguing. I don't really care about "going back" to any time anymore because I found hobbies and people that I can create into the future with, and I moved to boards where I can do that. Puniru brought me back to /a/ and I've been enjoying it, but it's not my homeboard anymore.
>Luckily, there are still some sparks of light here and there.
That's another good thing: on the Internet and IRL you can find pockets of genuinely cool people. Picrel is a bunch of guys singing COLORS on the street at Anime Expo 2025, where I also sung Guilty Future and a cute woman called me an "oldfag". You just have to look for fun and keep an ear out.

4chan hit national popularity on two separate occasions BEFORE the fucking 2010s. 4chan was part of the top 100 Alexa rankings at one point. Site simply grew too big, kept getting bigger, and there were never any permanent stable methods placed to increase quality. Mods are every bit as new as the niggers nowadays ruining everything that they touch.

Your mentality is what killed it. Trying to have some banter and get a chuckle out of fellow anons became really boring once everyone started to act paranoid that everyone else was just "fishing for (you)s" and you must not play along

Every single one of those pics is made on the spot for a simple gag about slowpoke being slow. Typical /b/tard behaviour.

Slowpoke reacts to things slowly, sometimes with a year delay. In this case the guy posted Slowpoke reacting to things on the spot but it turns out it was another guy disguised as Slowpoke and then Slowpoke slowly shows up and after an excruciating wait, finishes by noting the other guy looks like him.

The elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about was that the “golden days of 4chan” were when the website was 90% 14-18 year old millennials, usually White Otaku. There was a cohesion and mist importantly a youthful (underageb&) spirit on the site. As the site got older it got more serious, more cynical, more lame. The elephant in the room is we were kids being silly and “cringe”, instead of self policing the soul out of everything in fear of being reddit.

You're absolutely right and this can't be fully avoided but age isn't an excuse to grow (too) cynical.

I would actually argue even today, even with this aging population, 4chan is still a lot more wholesome than other social networks around. They're a lot meaner over there even if they wouldn't dare using the dreaded F word

Well actually, I want to append a caveat saying effortposting can only work if 4chan's users have passion. It's the distinction I have for it at the present: 4chan is emotional, but no longer passionate. This dude OP posts a benign Slowpoke post and everyone immediately jumps to whining and moping how things used to be with nary an interest in picking things back up. Well there, just one of many examples. The lack of passion just subsumes itself ad nauseam to the point hardly anyone posts with care, hardly anyone browses the site.

I think it was more than 4chan wasn't as well known outside of hardcore forum users. MSN Messanger was still a big thing among most normalfags at the time and was easy to access prior to facebook becoming big so most flocked there and never considered forums outside of major hobby sites like Gamefaqs and Gaia. So the people who ended up here either got filtered out by how different the discussions were compared to every other forum site, or just lurked for a few years before gaining the courage to make a reply or post.

Current year internet content is the stuff of nightmares, 0 creativity whatsoever ad ridden hellscape designed to drain your attention and ragebait you into a perpetual state of anxiety.
And still somehow can't put it down since it's been intertwined in every aspect of real life, how the fuck can I escape?
>>
>>282681255
The internet was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, be glad we were here to experience it when it was new and exciting.
Though maybe when actual virtual reality becomes a thing, we might still be alive to enjoy its wild-west era before the general population/ world governments/ corporations catch up and make it boring

Already by 2007 with the Lucky Star moefags VS Gurren Lagann manime faggots, the kind of dynamic you speak of was a common occurrence.

I don't think the tech is going to advance much from now. The shit I did on my computer a decade ago really isn't much different. Hardware has gotten better, but that basically amounts to being able to offset lack of software optimization a bit. Stuff like graphical fidelity in games and video has essentially stopped getting better.
>>
>>282681677
It's not the tech that can't advance much further, it's the software that's hit a brick wall. Game development, as an example, is slower than ever because of the sheer amount of time it takes to achieve 'industry standard' graphical fidelity. And most of a studio has to be committed to it just to ship a video game on time. Problem is, you can't just scale up dev studios and get a linear return on quality and speed of development because the bigger the team, the more that it starts to slow down development due to communication and management issues exacerbating exponentially.
>>
>>282681448
I honestly wonder if the internet makes it past this century. I mean on a general level some sort of functionality will always be there, but I can't see governments putting up with it for much longer. Shit is getting more and more restricted as we speak.
I'm sure it will come back eventually when humanity evolves, but it's still a privilege to have been here for the world wide web.

How can you read through this thread and be depressed about the internet defining our generation? That invention has let us experience some amazing things. Yeah, there will always be a struggle to keep shitty corpos and governments from getting complete control over it, and we are on the losing side of that battle (right now), but don't let that taint the good times we have had.

Even now, the younger generation is building an underground network on places like neocities because the smarter ones among them won't put up with corporate social media slop.

I'm genuinely happy. What a self-absorbed cunt. Anyone saying otherwise was part of the problem.

From what I've seen of the archives, /a/ seemed quite negative in 2006 too when it comes to seasonals, but more positive when it comes to more miscellaneous threads, which seems like an inversion compared to right now (very small sample size though, all the images being deleted makes browsing archives not very fun, so I haven't done it much).
The negativity didn't seem like obvious bait though, unlike now.

I dunno man, I can generate anime porn in my computer just from typing in a few gelbooru tags and clicking go, with all the right numbers of fingers and toes even, and in the exact style of some random artist I used to follow on twitter if I want to. Some five years ago this was the stuff of dreams. I'd say tech is still moving very fast.

Unfortunately the average 14 year old nowadays has already been on twitter for 2 years, so they aren't any less cynical than anyone already here.

Literally it was when (You)s were introduced. Prior to (You)s, every board had an higher quality. This is known by everyone who was around back then, even if they don't mention it explicitly. Look back, and you'll remember what it was like to see that everyone in the thread was actually reading the whole thread.

>that time (You)s were removed and everyone went so apeshit they had to be reinstated the very next day
I had a slight glimmer of hope.

I think everything's related though. For example the fact that back in the day the only way to participate was to sit your ass in front of a computer, and regularly hitting F5, actively clicking on quoted posts to follow along, refreshing the front page because there wasn't even a catalog, etc etc, it all meant you had to be "here", actively paying attention to what you and everyone else were posting

Pic related was right all along and it's terrible what's come to pass.
Ironic shitposting, ironic praise, ironic politics that turned out to be not so ironic.
You can hate the mods on this board all you want, but thank god there's a bit of decency in keeping that fucking frog off the threads. Every other board on this site is damn near unusable because of post-post-post-post-post-post-post-post-post-post-post-irony.
Anyway, Thunderbolt Fantasy threads were the closest I've felt to the old era of having fun watching a show. Funny that it was puppets that did that. Puppetfriends at ACEN the past two years were generally cool dudes too.
