Just finished this and didn't see a thread, loved it and want more.
He loves it!
>>282633271I love it.
>>282633217You should read everything by the author, including Kaiji parts 3-6Strongest Man Kurosawa is easy to read, not too long and one of his best worksAkagi/Ten are great (possibly better than Kaiji) but the games are mahjongOther small manga (Zero/Buraiden Gai) are also pretty good
Watch and read Akagi if you can bear with not understanding 90% of what's happening (unless you happen to already play Mahjong), vibes are still great.Read the manga. Part 3 is great, part 5 is really good as well. Part 4 you can kind of rush through, and part 6 is on hiatus so read it at your discretion.
>>282633396Zero is great as well, though sadly it'll probably never be finished
>>282633217Watch the pachinko youtube videos, is the closest thing to a season 4 we will ever have. But tbf I liked the ending of the 3rd one, is better than no having an adaptation at all or be raped by budget constraints.
>>282633217You should watch Tetsuya tbfh, it fits that sort of underground gambling niché, Tetsuya is a gambler who won't mind cheating in order to get a one up on his enemies who are also 100% cheating in the same game as well. Also set in similar time period as Akagi. Side characters and main character get decent amount of character growth and plot development, hell, there's 0 useless side character that interacts with the main character regarding plot and growth. 0 sus fanservice but not full on gay regarding no attractive women around, just fun time all around.
>>282633217Also kaiji OST is underrated, too bad the composer got blacklisted from the industry for a small mistake, is bullshit.
>>282634108> Creative got busted for MUH Weed.Based.
>>282633419Akagi is next on the list. I need all the gambling animes.
>>282634356Akagi is a legit lifechanger but you have to read Ten for it
>>282634157ah yes, Japan's irrational fears about marijuana are so based
>>282634380> Had to read Ten for it.Why? I enjoyed Akagi by itself when I read through it after watching Kaiji.
>>282634407Nah, the based thing is that it was a creative doing Ganja which is normal as fuck in west that we don't even see it as a bad thing. Its actually better usually if we know a creative is taking weed because their mind is more sharp and creative about shit they do like early rock and metal bands, its just bad for people with no work ethic.
>>282634418Akagi is already great and one of my favorite manga, it's just that Ten adds another perspective to it and tons of emotional weight too. It's the final part of Akagi's story after all.
>>282634441>its just bad for people with no work ethicI'm beginning to think this is why the Japanese government is so scared of it. Their economy relies on overworked salarymen.
>>282634473It would just be a benefit, as if their top paid people aren't doing coke as well just in secret like most countries. There's productive drugs (coke/weed) and then there's the ones that fuck you up and make you unable to work which are bad, its all about the dose, the persona and the doctor. Their economy doesn't really rely on anything but exports right now, that's their current job market, especially multi-media exports are their main biz because it sells well overseas. Had the Chinese not stolen their factory work in 90-2000s we would be getting cheap quality products from Japan instead and their economy would be much in better standing. But we know who wants to keep the Japanese down in this regard and who benefit from it. (American Zionists.)
>>282634356How much does it take to learn majhong?, if its less than 3 hours I'll do it to understand Akagi.
>>282634919You'll get the basic rules in 10 minutes on mahjong soul by playing the tutorial. It's actually not a hard game on a basic level, you either draw tiles or you call tiles (pon/kan/chi), and your goal is to make 4 triplets (like 456, or 555) and 1 pair.If you play a game or two after that you'll have it locked down. The only hard part that remains is pic related: these are the kinds of winning hands that you can make to win (yaku). There are quite a few (even though only 5-10 are ever seen in practice and most are simple) which can be intimidating at first. When playing for the first time, beginners will make the mistake of calling tiles and they'll complete the aforementioned 4 triplets 1 pair winning hand, but without any of these yaku on the picture, which means the game wont let them win and they're left confused.Tldr: play the mahjong soul tutorial, play one or two games but don't call tiles (pon/chi). Then watch Akagi, you can keep this picture alongside to read on the hand names when you want to follow the details. It's not that important at first anyway you can mostly just coast along. You'll get better at mahjong as you read Akagi and Ten and it'll ruin your life eventually too
>>282635127cool, thanks m8. So how would you compare it to for example learning poker, where you have to not only know the hands you have but also kind of guess the other players may have depending of their bets, table position and played cards?
>>282635168It's a lot about balancing attack and defense like you described. You have your starting hand, you get an idea of the kind of hand you want to build, you discard the unneeded tiles but also look at the tiles your opponents discard. If you're trying to build a flush hand on one kind of tile and your opponent is doing the same (he's discarding all but that kind of tile) then chances are it's going to be tough. So you can make all kinds of reads and adjustments based on that. The gist of the game is "try to win your hand without discarding the tiles that your opponents need to win THEIR hand" (because if you do, you pay the full value) so you can really read their discards to get an idea of the danger and whether you should keep pushing or notYou can also go for mindgames by waiting on purpose on innocuous tiles or throwing good tiles early on.
>>282635430cheers, I will download that game then, its a bit too moe for my taste but whatever
>>282635691You can just play on browser. And yeah it is the gacha/moe version of these online clients but also the user friendly one.
>>282633217Both Akagi and Tetsuya are good. Mahjong Hishouden Naki no Ryuu is one of my favorites but people would consider it boring but I enjoyed it.
>>282633217I wish
yeah, try Kakegurui for something laterally related which i also liked
>>282638359also notice i didnt say it is as good. but there's limited anime to choose from in this uh, genre
>>282634919I don't know mahjong but I'll watch it anyway.
I recommend Liar Game too. That just got an anime announcement by Madhouse and I think the Kaiji director. I found the manga really entertaining, it's also focused on high stakes games and outwitting your opponents.
>>282638359It's on the list of things to watch for sure.
>>282633217bump3 episodes into it, i am really enjoying it so far
>>282641971You're gonna have a blast, champ.
>>282642106Kill yourself very graphically.
>>282633217>>282633271
>>282634356>Akagi>Legendary Gambler Tetsuya>Saki >Pachislo Kizoku Gin >Houkago Saikoro Club >And the best anime of 2024: Pon no Michihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLAunPDTeYA
>>282642143>mad for no reasontake your meds
>>282633419You don't need to know Mahjong to understand 90% of it, it's the opposite, you only will not understand like 5%. All you have to know is that it is a more complicated Poker, the rest is explained in the anime.
>>282633217> watching Kaiji> I was kind of a gambling/betting addict already so I understood most of his stupid decisions> Realized I had the same black jacket he tends to wearWTF he's literally me, and it's pretty bad because he's a genius and I'm a retard. Did the mangaka based him on a real life person? The only thing that annoys me is gamblers tend to be betraying cunts irl compared to the MC
I watched 16 episodes of a dude playing the same pachinko machine and had fun! 10/10!
>>282642339>doesn't know /a/ hates jaks>>>/r/eddit
>>282634356>Sangatsu no Lion
>>282642318The best mahjong manga is still The Tiles I Cannot Cut Are Next To None
zawazawazawa
NANTOKA NAREEEEEEEEE
Do you think the casino rigged The Bog so the chairman would automatically win when he visited, or does the chairman really have the devil's luck and won the jackpot without rigging?
>>282642818Has to be rigged. I don't think even Washizu would easily win that
A reminder for all gentlemen to watch Tonegawa, then read Ichijou and Foreman after KaijiThey're literally as good as Kaiji
>>282642868wasnt the guy burned and deformed forever? or is a prequel?
>>282642882It's a comedic prequel. Basically workplace slice of life comedy with the men in black, he even makes a Twitter account at some point.Foreman is also a comedy but more about Japanese slice of life. Basically the mangaka just has some idea about whatever happened to him in real life or cool places he saw or some adult wisdom and makes a chapter out of it. It's crazy goodIchijou is the only one that is more in line with the Kaiji storyline. The first two kinda live in their own reality and make Tonegawa/Foreman much better persons than they were in Kaiji but Ichijou actually deals with his character flaws and the bad choices he made by becoming Teiai
My biggest issue with gambling related manga (that is not Kaiji) like kakegurui is they become picrel quite fast. The MC is bordeline omniscient or the stakes are so retard high that you know nobody is going to lose and will be a draw, or if someone losses is like "eh i planned that".
They're all such beautiful people even if Ootsuki scams children on occasion
The true feminism was the sweets we ate along the way...
>>282634356>Mahjong Hishou-den Naki no Ryuu (1988)>Super Real Mahjong: Kasumi Miki Shouko no Hajimemashite (1990)> Hikaru no Go (2001)>Touhai: Ura Rate Mahjong Touhai Roku (2024)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwBTjSMCUYo
>>282642868A reminder to not watch those since they take these cruel heartless characters and try to make you like them by giving them a heartwarming comedic backstory and completely ignore how horrible and sleazy they really are in kaijis story.
>>282642818"devil's luck" just means being able to cheat without getting caught
>>282643360They're their own separate universe disconnected from Kaiji reality (except Ichijou)These versions of the characters are actually a lot more interesting than the Kaiji ones (and that makes perfect sense since the Kaiji ones had a different purpose, the spinoff ones are often used to convey all the wisdom the author can think off which adds up to a lot of interesting things)It's silly to miss out on it unless you don't like adult slice of life I guess
>>282633217>outing yourself as a midwitBrave.
>>282643527>outing yourself as a retard
>>282634441Greatest artist were alchohlic get a fuck away with your gay ass drug. I rather do coke honestly.
>>282643360i remember how sleazy they are and i forgive themkaiji does some pretty sleazy things toohe stole some dudes collateral on the boatand dont forget that his original plan in minefield mahjong was to cheat
>>282642375To be fair Kaiji is also kind of a retard. And like 50% of his gambling buddies end up betraying him.
>>282633217The live action isn't bad if your bored but it is a rehash. I would really recommend the Liar Game live action though, the first episode isn't a good representation of the show so dont judge it based on that. 2nd season is even better.
>>282643360>Missing out because he doesn't like characters having more dimensionsSuit yourself.
>>282643013Like good and bad shounen, what matters is how the MC wins and how it was depicted rather than whether he will win or not.Kaiji's victories are a mix of planning, desperation and luck. That's what makes them satisfying at the end.
>>282634919To add to the other anon: If you do try to learn it, start by looking at your starting hand and aim for one specific hand in the list to get. You may accidentally get others as well, but that should help you actually complete a hand. Also some are just strict upgrades over others and only the highest counts, so likeHalf flush < full flushOutside hand < all terminals and honors / terminals in all sets < all honors / all honors
Kaiji has a very underrate OST.
>>282633217hated it
>>282648237Underrated in what sense? My impressions is that everyone who watched Kaiji loves the OST, but maybe it's not brought up all that often outside of Kaiji/FKMT threads.
>>282648277That's it, everyone who watches Kaiji likes it but not enough people know about it.
SHIKASHI
I tried watching Akagi but attempting to comprehend Mahjong was an experience I can only equate to attempting to discover what lies at the heart of the mountains of madness.
>>282648347See >>282635127It's easier if you actually play a few games. But you can also just watch Akagi anyway.
>>282648347You won't learn mahjong from Akagi anyway, at least not bread-and-butter mahjong. He plays Jankiryuu, aka demon style.
Isn't mahjong a gambling game for grandpa
>>282649750Grandpa started learning it when he was young, that's why he's so good at it. You should start learning it right now anon.
>>282644555Kaiji wasnt cheating to kill the other guy and not pay out the money he won like tonegawa.>>282643485Let me guess, you like to watch movies like Wicked, Malificent and Oz the Great and Powerful?
>>282652199what the fuck are you talking about?
Usogui wasn’t mentioned yet. Manga only, but one of my all time favorite gambling series. The Air Poker arc is my singular favorite gamble in anything, period.
>>282652293Those movies took established evil characters and lightened them up by giving them "sympathetic" backstories. Now you "sympathize with them.Tonegawa, ootsuki and ichijou arent sympathetic and they werent meant to be. Even after the roasting kneeling you werent supposed to sympathize with tonegawa.
Okay but when are we getting new chapters?
Every day until you hate it!
>>282652518It's not about sympathizing with them. You haven't read these spinoffs (or if you have it was superficial at best) if you think it's about that.In fact outside of Ichijou (the only series which actually tries to connect with the Kaiji setting), Tonegawa and Foreman never bring up the Kaiji stuff or try to handle these darker subjects. These series are basically their own things, Foreman is basically a Japanese author talking about the things he likes and how to appreciate life on a slower, more reflective pace. He uses the underground setting for comedy and time limit since Foreman only gets limited time outside. It's not too different from Kaiji part 6 having a lot more comedy. Except Kaiji 6 still takes place in the Kaiji continuity, this is different.
>>282652668It wouldn't be an understatement to say the author's hate for British food is more relevant than Ootsuki's fight with Kaiji
Oh, I didn't see that Yami-ma no Mamiya was continued and finished. Nice, I know what to read next then.
i think part 4 is very underrated
>>282652518Kaiji actually has very humanized, dignified villains.Tonegawa, Ichijou, Ootsuki, Endou and especially Kazuya all have their moments. Tonegawas speech about not wasting your life half awake and ignoring the stakes is iconic. I only first watched Kaiji because someone posted it here. They're obviously amoral and downright evil, but you have to keep it in perspective that their victims are mostly gambling fiends. People that have by their own accord gambled their lives away. To guys like Tonegawa, these people have already forsaken their lives to Teiai. That doesnt make Tonegawa good, but Tonegawa never set out to be a righteous moral person, just a guy that is ultimately aware of the cutthroat business hes in and he accepts he has to sink or swim. In the end he faces his own horrible punishment with dignity, he accepts he lost. Ichijou is presented as some sort of dark mirror to Kaiji. Hes bright but an underachiever like Kaiji, but he choose to forsake his morals becuase he couldnt bear being looked down on, while Kaiji himself is a far kinder person who looks for the best in people, much to his own detriment, but its also what ultimately he used to win against Tonegawa. He didnt underestimate Tonegawa, he fully expected Tonegawa to be as dilligent and sharp as he is, so he made a trap considering exactly those virtues. Kaiji even comes across as an older, wiser figure agaisnt Kazuya, who in essense is a spoiled rotten rich kid who belives he was abandoned by his mom and overlooked by his psycho dad. None of this justifies what they do, but theyre not presented as some mustache twirling bad guys either. Fukumoto makes it clear to humanize them. Theyre believable villains.
