When the special ED played, and I came to understand the Tanabe family tradition, and how the CITY came to be, it really moved me. This anime felt so alive brosIt's like the CITY was living and breathingMuch in part due to how so much of it was animated on the ones, as they say. It's very common for animes to fall into a lull when there are scenes where characters just talk to eachother, they'll devolve down into just the mouth moving and if you're lucky you'll get some blinking or slight body movements. In CITY even scenes like these have so much vibrance and action that there is never a moment where you feel stuckThis scene specifically would have been super easy to just phone in and have them talking about the photo contest results for a minute until the reveal. Instead, they had like 5 different visual gags to go along with it, turning into a great scene. I remember laughing my ass of when it cut to this shot specifically and these dorks were smushing faces from across the room. Every scene in the anime is like this. There is so much LOVE for animation itself in this show. You can feel how much fun the animators were having. Last recent show I watched with a similar amount of sheer creativity was bocchi the rock or mono. The last recent show I watched that looked this good on a consistent basis was frieren. This show has such high highs you forget that it's even possible to have lows. Safuckingkuga bros.

The focus is instead on just showing slice of life stuff, as the characters are living their lives and dealing with various sometimes very absurd struggles, but often very normal struggles too. A lot of interaction and interconnectedness between all these characters. They're each involved in each other's lives in various ways, despite being a fairly diverse cast in terms of age, career, etc. It's really about how everyone's got their own story going on but they're a community.It's really great. Just don't go into it thinking you're getting a new season of Nichijou. That said, the two shows are connected, a bit.
CITY is a lot more contemplative, too. It's not the constant frantic action of Nichijou, most of the time (but it does have Nichijou-style action too). Lots of stopping to smell the roses, so to speak. A lot of beauty in little moments. Some deeper conversations about life and goals and what they want.It really spans the gamut. You don't know if you're getting a wild slapstick thing with absurd nonsense happening, or a long lingering shot of something gorgeously drawn as two or three characters share a bit of their soul. The show knows how to use silence to great effect, or just a scene with music and no other sounds.

FYI you can watch this then read the manga with no problem, this was a very selective adaptation probably due to runtime.

I feel like we didn't talk enough about that crazy Princess Riko fantasy, and the other weird fantasy elements that during the musical.I still can't forgive Riko for breaking Tatewaku's heart. People who only judges CITY's quality by comparing it to Nichijou are fundamentaly wrong.Even if Nichijou is better as a show in itself from pure entertainment values, CITY's themes are conveyed so perfectly across its runtime it is definitely a superior labour of pure love for animation and its source material than Nichijou is. Nichijou had some sakuga moments for a couple of its comedy scenes, CITY is a nonstop flow of never seen before visual ideas and innovative sequences. The CITY race finish, the instant ramen eating scene, Makabe's dad journey for fried rice, Riko's takoyaki flashbacks, the entirety of episode5, not a single studio would have the balls or the creativity to adapt these sequences like KyoAni did. Watching any anime after City, even from the likes of Trigger or Shaft and it's impossible to feel how fucking stiff and flat everything is, I don't think there isn't a single conversation in CITY where a character talking isn't doing dozens of complicated movements the average viewer would never get how fucking insane it is in an anime production to put this much effort.Both Nichijou and CITY are about daily lives with a twist of comedy, but one focus on the lives of a couple of individuals and the other to the lives of everyone in one big whole of joy that is the CITY.Also I've written this back when ep1 started but I have to say it once again. Having Toyosaki Aki, who voiced Yui in K-ON 16 years ago who's most iconic sentence is "fun things are fun" now voicing Niikura and asking Nagumo "Did you find something fun" carrying both the theme of the story and of KyoAni in general is just pure unfiltired kinography the likes of which I can only kneel to.

After mulling it over for a few days, I have come to my final conclusion about CITY: good anime, bad adaption.I highly recommend any anime-onlies go read the manga, as the experience is not complete without both sides.
