There's so much focus on the negative aspects of the Rebuilds, what was lost, but let's focus on what went right.Shinji for the longest time got the blame for ruining everything, got shit from pretty much everyone except Kaji, Rei and Kensuke, and people even made the whole thing out represent how Shinji is anime otaku satan.But in the end, he stands there, VINDICATED.He built REAL friendships, went all in to save Rei in the most romantic rescue ever put on screen for Evangelion, saved the entire world as a consequence, went through hell for it, and still came back to save everyone for a second and FINAL time.He even charmed more than a few girls along the way by doing NOTHING.Even his haters had to give up.
Here is Shinji, giving it his all to save Rei, because she was worth it, more than anything else.Given the choice, he would do it again, and save the world in the process.
Despite the hate, and literally being at gunpoint, here he is forgiving Misato for betraying him, offering to even share in her burden of redemption.Did Misato deserve forgiveness?
Even Kaworu who wanted his best, put the blame squarely on Shinji, arguably at the worst of times too.In the end the obvious became clear, and I'd like to think their minds cleared a little, and they saw that Shinji at best was like them, a cog in the machine.
The deranged WILLE tools whose actions helped Gendo and SEELE more than it hindered them, also has to bend the knee and admit, Shinji is their savior.
It'd be hard to regain the trust that was lost between these two, but Shinji made it despite no one having his back (that's still there, present).
Even though Rei was out of action for most of the movie, she got her wish for both her and Shinj, a life without the EVA's.Shinji and Rei solved the franchise's narrative.
I liked the Rebuilds.
