Only a few episodes in (watched the prequel movies which were amazing) but it's pretty solid so far. My only gripe is that a lot of the war battles boil down to>main character enacts strategy>other main character on the opposition tells higher position leader that it's bait>higher position leader takes the bait like a dumbass because of big ego>rinse and repeatEverything else has been decently interesting. I like the introduction of the nationalist party and the shady president in the democracy Yang inhabits. I'm glad it's not just a total jerkfest for democratic governmentsAnd Reinhard's relationship with his sister is extremely well done. He's built up to be a nice tragic figure
I'll give you all a real controversial statement:>get into space>build big intergalactic nation>become degenerate Mankind deserved Rudolf Von Goldenbaum. And I hope we never reach a point where we need a Goldenbaum to correct us.
>>282661510the space battles don't matter at all. The whole thing is an allegorical dialogue abput pre-war imperial japan's strengths and weaknesses vs post-war democratic japan's strengths and weaknesses. standards of living, corruption, working class conditions, sense of cultural identity, what kind of person do they consider admirable etc etc. the scifi setting and tropes are as irrelevent as the religous imagery in evangelion. A lure to trick melon heads into actually thinking about japanese politics
>>282661859Hello new friend
>>282661859>The whole thing is an allegorical dialogue abput pre-war imperial japan's strengths and weaknesses vs post-war democratic japan's strengths and weaknesses.>standards of living, corruption, working class conditions, sense of cultural identity, what kind of person do they consider admirable etc etc.Oh wow I had no idea that was the background behind the original story. This makes it way more interesting to engage with then thank you. Maybe I'll read up on Japanese politics as I go along then>A lure to trick melon heads into actually thinking about japanese politicsWell it got me. I wish more anime would do that. I can't think of many interesting political anime or artistic media in general that actually discusses politics with nuance and without being overly preachy.
name a more classic joke
Thoughts on the novel covers?
Although she was only in one self contained episode, Benemunde still managed to leave a strong impression. So crazy and hot. It was like I was watching RoV.Most of the female character designs have been on point till now.
>Benemunde still managed to leave a strong impression.
>>282663822What does the skull do?
>>282664730Yeah, even the way she speaks like some archaic noblewoman Japanese. She has Horo's voice acress. I guess it's because there's few female characters, but almost all minor female characters have a lot of screen presense even if they don't do a lot of things that are relevant on screen. Dominique doesn't really do anything plot related, but she has this air of mystery surrounding her that coupled with a good character design and voice work makes her way more memorable than a minor character has any right to be.
>Merkatz and his assistant never changed out of their uniforms after joining YangSurely they would have some spare clothes, right?
Too slow for me but it's definitely brilliant.
>ruins, cheapens and trivializes the entire show in your path
>>282669650Julian won't get angry if you say that, but he will if you insult Yang.
>>282664730She shows up a little more in the Gaidens, but ultimately, her political role is to show how the Goldenbaum dynasty's internal power struggles precluded it from enduring any longer than it actually did.>>282667919They probably brought a whole wardrobe's worth of spare uniforms, but it's funnier to think that they're unreasonably stubborn about never changing uniforms because they're not actually supporters of republican democracy.
>>282661779>And I hope we never reach a point where we need a Goldenbaum to correct us.Lol, lmao. We've needed many people like that throughout history, and the people who overthrew them to found even bigger dynasties, just to reach the state we are now. Which is a state where the serf thinks he has political power, but is in fact ruled over by people he doesn't even know, his every opinion, thought and desire manufactured by these people. Where you can only hope some of those rulers are more like Lohengramm rather than Goldenbaum.
>>282669731I'll never forgive Yang for not sexing his wife, sorry Julian but Yang is turbo gay
Does anybody have the two stitched together screencaps where one of the characters (I think it was Poplin, I'm not sure) kind of breaks the fourth wall and says "This is not a anime where the evil villain laughs after monologuing his plans" and then the second screenshot is from the final season where the final antagonist (the earth cult dude) literally does just that?Always thought it was funny but I never saved it for some reason.
>>282669990
>>282670036He didn't actually say that by the wayHe said this
>>282669990What was the Earth cult like in the books, as retarded as in the show? I thought they were going to be used to deliver an intriguing allegory about religious or political extremism, but then the end of the show rolls around and they just blow them all up and forget all about it. It was another thing that led to me never being able to take the show too seriously.
This will always be my favourite LoGH edit and it's made better by the fact that it's sung by Reinhard's seiyuuhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwW1kUR9K-o
>>282670096>hating on mother terrawhy don't you go and fuck off to another planet then?
>>282670284that is pure kino, although Anno could only dream of making something as cogent and coherent as LotGH
>>282670369Gaia. The planets name is Gaia. Terra means dirt
bros why didn't he breed them?
fuck wrong thread
>>282664730Now that I think about it, the focus on ring gets a whole new meaning after episode 26
>>282671799Rudolph Von Goldenbaum's genetic purity laws means sterilizing those with physical and mental deformities like autistic cat women.
Pretty boy soap opera with cryptofascist sentiments.
>>282671799What always kept LOGH from achieving true masterpiece status was the lack of catgirls.
>>282671799>>282671826Disappointed that LoGH fans watch this modern isekai garbageI thought we were better than this
>>282661245Currently on episode 16 and it's absolutely great. Intelligent and elegantly written, very odd to see that in an anime. I am having trouble remembering all the characters' names and still haven't grasped the whole political canvas. Started with the anime and nothing else, would these prequels the other anon mentioned help me get a better grasp of the side characters and story in general or would they just confuse me more?
>>282672227>crypto>implying the driving theme of great man theory was even remotely concealed
>>282661859Well the show made a good case for why the glorious Yamato race needs to revive its Empire then.Nippon Banzai!!!
I like how back when they wrote the show they tried creating the worst possible democracy, yet they couldn't ever have dreamed of how utterly self-destructive and degenerate this retarded political system would end up becoming just a few decades later.
>>282672472there are some cool prequel movies but they're not necessary to enjoy the series imo. other anons can weigh in its been nearly a decade since I've watched anything lotgh related
>>282672726It's hardly the first time such a thing has happened. Democratic systems go back a while, and they rise and fall frequently. France alone has gone through the pipeline multiple times and even narrowly avoided it after the Second World War. You might think that we'd have figured out what goes wrong eventually, but it's just part and parcel of a flexible government system that it has weaknesses in its system. Just like systems of government where power is concentrated at the top and is inflexible has its own severe structural issues. The problem of the balance of powers of representatives and power of executive is a historical constant.
>>282672962That's true of course, but democracies by design inherently decay like this and once they reach a certain point bureaucratic metastasis they literally become unable to produce good outcomes at all.Meanwhile a totalitarian government, even a heavily flawed one, still has the mechanism to produce positive outcomes and it also makes meaningful revolt much more feasible.A dictator for example could decree tomorrow to expel all illegal immigrants from a nation, but even when a democracy elects a "right-wing" leader it's barely even capable of cutting welfare benefits to its illegals, with the idea of total expulsion being essentially inconceivable. There are far too many bureaucratic hurdles to do literally anything that actually matters, not to mention that this system innately selects for career politicians who have no real incentive to take actions that cause severe short-term discomfort to the population anyway.
This guy and Oberstein have the exact same phenotype. I was dissapointed that there wasn't a 5th party of inbred Oberstein clones pulling the strings of every other faction to take control of the galaxy.
>>282673243>Meanwhile a totalitarian government, even a heavily flawed one, still has the mechanism to produce positive outcomes and it also makes meaningful revolt much more feasible. It would have historically, but now no matter if its a democracy or a dictatorship, the tools at the disposal of the ruling elite to control the masses are too powerful and too sophisticated.
>>282669650seems based to me
>>282672726I swear if this thread starts talking about trump again.
>>282674622Trunicht was just a symptom, not the problem itself.
>>282672369Its one of the few good ones if you give it a chance.
>>282669736Fuck, they're even wearing it in the third ED where everyone's dressed up for the occasion
Damn, that was probably the best battle yet.It was much needed episode after seeing Yang suffer through that inquiry torture.
>>282676627>>282669736>>282667919I theorized that despite being defectors they are proud of the Empire heritage. And also not exactly supporters of the Alliance's democracy, but instead doing it just to fight the Empire.
>>282678781>>282678781I think it's just keeping things simple for the viewer's sake. Nonetheless it's funny to see them still in uniform in these casual get-together scenes.
>>282672369Mushoku is as worthwhile as LoGH, they just focus on different aspects of the human condition
>>282669736Thats exactly why they wear the uniform. They aren't republicans, they are hardliners of monarchy and they never switched sides. They are still loyal subjects to the proper emperor.
>>282676627>>282669736To me it seemed more like the Alliance didn't let them change uniforms that easily. Also later on they were part of the old dynasty government which proved again they were never part of the Alliance.
>>282664730She's up there with the Reunthal's crazy blonde who ends up hate fucking him.
>>282661245>Discuss LOGHBut there is nothing left to say that hasn't already been said.
>>282678773This is the perfect example of Stupid Kino.In the OVA, Kempf goes on a kamikaze run WITHOUT letting his soldiers evacuate first. That's stupid and retarded, but it sure is entertaining. In DNT, Kempf has all his soldiers evacuate before the kamikaze run. That's smarter for him, but way less fun for the audience to watch.
>>282682358Some things are worth saying again, such as Katerose is best girl
>>282661859Truth. Truth that many LotGH fans don't know about, or ar too afraid to embrace.
>>282670284Damn, I didn't know Ryo Horikawa was a singer too
>>282669919What do you think the OP pic meant?
>>282666569I assume that between the two, most anons prefer Hildegard over Fredrica, right? This was the only decent fanart with both of them I could find in a quick search, if anyone has any please share.>>282666227Look cool, mostly. I've heard the novel's artist is Giger-inspired, I could see it, but I'm not sure if it's true.

Gentle reminder that this man saved the Galactic Empire. Without him guilt-tripping Reinhard over Westerland, Reinhard doesn't fuck Hilde, dies without an heir within a couple of years and the Empire will be easy pickings for (((Rubinsky))) and the Earth Cult.
>>282682358I would like to talk about how hot yang is
>>282672369>Disappointed that LoGH fans watch this modern isekai garbage>I thought we were better than this
Annerose's voice just does something to me. I can't explain it.
>>282684478There are two artists on the novels. Naoyuki Kato who did the first half of the covers, designed the ships, etc. And then some other guy, who's work I don't care about. Kato definitely was/is a Giger fan. You can see it in the greebles.
>>282672369MT is better than LoGH.
>>282661245Feels weirdly out of character for Frederica of all people to be chastising Yang about killing millions of people when the whole reason they were knee deep in their shit was because he avoided killing as most people as possible during their battles
>>282683050literally the BGOAT
>>282685862she makes my rein hardo.
The documentary episodes are among some of the best because it gives the feeling of how truly vast space is. Easily some of the best world building that could ever be done in entertainment.
>>282661510>>282661859>>282662232The wars are based on Prussian history, not pre-war and post-war Japan.
>>282672472The only prequel movie I've heard is helpful is My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars.
>>28266124569 episodes in and it sucks. I tired, /a/. For some reason /m/ masturbates to it chronically.>>282661510Being completely serious it didn't live up to the hype until episode 42, then it went downhill since episode 56 and never recovered.
>>282689709>tried
>>282664730She shows up on the Spiral Labyrinth prequel OVAs, still with her usual scheming. The Duellist is probably my favorite arc.

>>282661779>And I hope we never reach a point where we need a Goldenbaum to correct us.Yeah, that would be tragic.
>>282685921Brunhild and Barbarossa are so fucking sexy.
>>282684478I liked Frederica more because she felt like a partner to Yang. She was with him through thick and thin. On the other hand Hildegard's relationship with Reinhard reads too much like an otome villainess isekai. Brave intelligent strong socially aware woman who isn't afraid to take extreme measures to save her love interest from his stupid male tendencies and whose love is what saves him from falling into depression or something. It also irked me that they used the whole "aww, he fell in love, isn't he a dork?" angle as an excuse to distract the audience from the elephant in the room that was Westerland. At the time, it was the biggest stain in Reinhard's record, but he never had to suffer the repercussions of his oopsie. Hildegard is less of a genuine love interest and more of a plot device.
>>282661245Yang is a badly written "smart" character.Everyone keeps jerking him off about how smart he is, the show keeps telling us how smart he is, but he is never actually shown to be smart.
>>282670233Honestly he never comes off as autistic. He is just very rational and diligent person.
>>282691172??? He makes pretty accurate predictions and millitary plans, and goes through great length to explain his though process. The problem is opposite, he is too smart to be believable. Maybe the narrator is Yangfag.
>>282691172He isn't badly written. If anything he is really short sighted in not seeing why it has to be him to take power, if only temporarily Cincinnatus style. His massive inability to understand that at times you just have to give into reality instead of demanding ideological purity is quite the argument for him being not smart, and the show even points this out multiple times.
