>>282677220Is chapter 9 called Amidst the Seacats Cries?
>>282677980No, it's The Approaching Fall.
Despite reading mostly Japanese media, I still have very little knowledge about the Edo period, especially the social structures. It's just not something I every really looked into but really should since it seems to permeate through a lot of manga.
>>282677227>Cicada's Cries

>>282678311>missing the most educational daily of 2025
Does anyone know the status of Matsumoto and Eifuku's other manga? It was about little-known and forgotten historical figures from Japan. Unfortunately, the last chapter was published in 2020, before completing a full volume
>>282678311here's a quick, messy run down: when Tokugawa Ieasu managed to secure his position as shogun he, and eventually his successors, sought to address a few perceived problems regarding the security of the new government. the country had seen continuous wars for almost 100 years and you can imagine how that messed up the existing institutions and social structures: the Ashikaga shogunate had lost their grip on power and various feudal lords engaged in regional wars against one another; these lords were in constant fear of rebellion by their subordinates; the once rigid caste system was overlooked and allowed peasants to climb the army hierarchies as they grew in size. in one word, it was Gekokujo: "the low conquered the high". Oda Nobunaga came close to unifying the country before being betrayed by a general, his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi finished the job but couldn't built a good power structure to secure his succession, and the Tokugawa were keenly aware of how difficult it would be to make a bunch of powerful lords used to war and their massive armies stand down forever. it is from this position that a lot of the Edo period social structure comes from: - they expelled and prohibited other europeans from freely trading in the country, since some lords in the Toyotomi faction were buddies with Portuguese and Spanish traders, as well as to mitigate the spread of Christianity (Ieasu's role in dealing with the Ikko Ikki also shaped this decision). only the Dutch could do limited trade in Nagasaki, until Perry arrived and forced the opening of the ports.- the big feudal lords were separated into those who had been allied with the Tokugawa prior to the decisive battle of Sekigahara and those who pledged fealty afterwards and were not to be trusted. the latter could never hold important titles.
- the shogunate capital was moved to the small town of Edo with two objectives: first to make all the feudal lords waste money on maintaining their mansions there, as well as making them have to spend a determined amount of time living there, away from their power bases in the provinces. this came with the added benefit of making the city grow like never before: the lord's retinues needed food, services and entertainment, that brought in more peasants who in turn created more demands and brought more people. that's why the characters in this manga live in rented apartments. - the peasants were disarmed of their swords and guns. this started all the way back with Nobunaga, and many peasants happily obliged because he and later Tokugawa were promising an end to the ravaging wars. the villages did not need to care so much about their protection and could focus on farming and taxes. now only the Samurai could walk around with swords. - the caste system was updated into four categories: the big shots (the Emperor, Nobles, Feudal Lords and the Shogun), the Bushi (warrior class), the Peasants & Crafstmen, and the Merchants. (there were also the Eta; undesirables with hereditary, dirty-yet-necessary professions like butchers, tanners, gravediggers etc.) these castes were inspired by Confucian thought, which is why merchants were at the bottom since they did not produce anything. ironically, with the shogun's peace merchants had an easier time trading and became much wealthier on average than many nobles and samurai. landed peasants also benefited from new farming techniques and a fixed tax system. also note that withing each class there were many tiers.- temple registers and road barriers were used to keep people in their own province and limit travel. you had to have a pass from your provincial lord in order to get out of it and enter another province.
- without war, there was no need to maintain large armies. the first to go were the professional foot soldiers, who were Bushi but were not Samurai, these could go on to become peasants, craftsmen, etc. then the lower rank Samurai were dismissed, which created a bunch of Ronin (masterless samurai). you can guess this was caused many problems, imagine training your whole life to fight in your lord's wars, to expect to have food, shelter and a stipend for your services, to have a whole mentality of serving until the death when suddenly you're thrown out in the street. that's where a bunch of samurai movies and tropes come from. this was all I could think about, but if you have any doubts please ask. I really like researching this period.

>>282677256Daizaburo is best boy for sure.
>>282678311It was basically Neo-Confucian North Korea where everyone was pretty crazy because they had a massively strong Confucian warrior culture and no one to fight. Merchants got super rich, but had to kowtow to derelict nobles. Most samurai ideally became bureaucrats that did basic administrative work. >https://youtu.be/nQY3dbUsVgE
