Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the first volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump.MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue. I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits. In addition, unlike the twice-a-week schedule I've had for every series thus far, I will be switching to dumping this manga once a week on Thursdays.
Cover is on the next page. These four pages were originally in full color. Per Furinkan: "Rumiko Takahashi begins MAO in May 2019 after taking her longest hiatus between series. She finished her prior serial, Kyokai no RINNE, in December 2017." So, yeah, she took quite a bit of time off. Though she did still create two short tributes and two one-shots in 2018. The one-shots being "Empty Apartment" and "Room for Two" which are currently not available in English either officially or unofficially. Furinkan also mentions how in a twitter Q&A, Rumiko recommended the works of Agatha Christie and said that "When I am addicted to one work, I have a habit of reading the work by the author from the beginning. During the holidays before the MAO series I went to the Agatha Christie shelf in the bookstore, bought and read, and repeated everyday. And I finished reading almost all her works. When it was later collected in black and white in the tankobon the page was cropped removing the left-most kanji. Also keep in mind this is horizontally written text, and at the time in the 1920s horizontal text was read right to left (instead of left to right like today, see migi yoyake). The lower text (over Otoya's head) says 常設館 when re-written in a left to right order. This means "jousetsukan" (performance hall). However it is difficult to say where the English "Rakugo" element is found in the Japanese original." I'll post the page from the Japanese volume after the dump.

The kanji used to write it are "vegetable" (菜) and "flower" (花), though together they refer to a specific type of plant, the "rapeseed"." The name has the Furigana なのか next to it in print. 菜の花 is usually how you refer to rapeseed blossoms, as far as I can tell.

So, I got a bit curious and uh, it seems this series has both someone in charge of translation AND a person in charge of English Adaptation. So, a dedicated localizer. They had stopped doing this for a while as Rin-ne only had a translator (an English speaker based on the name). So, presumably, this is why there seem to be many more changes, someone has to justify their job so we don't get honorifics and there are a lot of things different to avoid having translation notes in the margins. Like back in the 90s... Presumably, the localizer does not speak Japanese at all and is going off of what the translator is telling them so there's inherently a bit of telephone going on when it comes to what is important. It seems like both this translator and this localizer worked on Mao for a while. Both of them we replaced in Volume 19 forward, with the editor taking over the localizer position. I don't know why the replacement. So, we're going to have these two for a while. Hopefully Shaenon will take a few less liberties going forward, but uh, no guarantees. I would hope in Volume 19, the translation becomes more direct, but no guarantees for that either. >>282741386I am trying to not be directly critical, since I understand localization is an art, but this is pretty unacceptable to me.
