Action scenes in this manga are too messy and confusing, and are coming too often. The theme of being useful to the war as a non-combatant has only just been brought back by the boat guy and no longer matters since he's now gonna be another spirit fighter. Should've just had the MC being a magical cook supporting the main army and getting into fights only when needed.

That said, I'm going to go against the grain here and say that OTR picking up this demonic transformation means...nothing really. It's very common in shonen for the protagonist to unlock some kind of similar cursed/uncontrollable form, but more importantly it basically never has any relevance to the ending of the manga, it's more an opportunity for the protag to get some character development (and a single free win card the first time it's used) than anything that ever used gets or referenced for the true finale. I would say that this is a sign that the author is trying to shake things up by doing something mildly shocking rather than an indication that he's speed-running the ending. Not that I think OTR is axe immune or anything, I'm just saying this isn't the signpost that leads there.

This chapter brings the same feeling as chapters 11 and 12, when Otr got the Iron Spirit gauntlet and Cholerio appeared throwing a lot of infodump at us, many people started to deduce that Kawaguchi had already received the notice that it would be axed there, but it turns out that the reviews and reactions to these chapters were good, and the manga managed to get a bit of a lifespan. Now again we have more infodump along with a new power up/transformation. There were a lot of cool things here, but it left a bitter taste in the end. This really makes it seem like Kawaguchi is rushing the plot and is trying to show us as much content as possible before the axe comes.The sad thing is that if Otr was being published in another magazine (or even in Jump+), Kawaguchi wouldn't have to worry so much about sales reaching 30k or more in a month.
