Putting aside the second arc, I heard the first part of Death Note was an absolute masterpiece and went in super hyped, but desu I was kinda disappointed. If L was like 99% sure Light was Kira but still thinking there were other killers out there, wouldn't it have been smarter to just haul his ass to some black site or long-term facility? Forget 'muh laws' and all that—a global threat like Kira totally justifies an extralegal move, right? Or am I just a moron?

L couldn't have used more drastic illegal measures that depended on people trusting his intuition because it truly made no sense that people still trusted his intuition after he hid cameras in Light's room and got nothing and then he shrugged like it didn't matter. The "small TV in a potato bag" power move should have ended the manga. Light used supernatural assistance to pull it off and therefore L would have to accuse Light of having unknown supernatural powers beyond the power to kill in order to know there were cameras in his room and know all the blind spots in order to continue his secret Kira activity while somehow dodging being seen. It's actually true, Light did have those pseudo-wizard powers through Ryuk, but L had to convince the japanese police that he did in order to justify his "intuition" that Light was still guilty after this. L's career should have been dead. He had spied on underaged children because "trust me it will reveal stuff on the Kira case" and got nothing and had no explanation. He should have been declared a fraud and sent to jail at this point. The story only continued because of bad writing. This event, which should have completely exonerated Light, was immediately completely forgotten by both L and the police just so the story would go on. But no, he wasn't going to have Light raided by a swat team after this.

they did put Light behind bars for several months. At first the killings stopped, but then they continued again.
L recognized that "the power of kira" can be transferred, including making the original owners lose their memories of such accidents.
Light tried to feign complete innocence by writing the fake rule of "13 days" into the note, which L was going to test out if it really works like that after finding the death note. Rem not wanting Misa to be captured again killed L to avoid that from happening(as the other task force members were too much of moralfags to test out the deathnote) and thus it was never disproven until Mello in part2 happened, thus Light appeared to be innocent to the remaining task force members.
As usual, people who claim Death Note is not as good as other people claim it is, don't pay attention. Let me guess, you watched it at 2x speed because 25 episodes is too long for your ADD brain.
>>
>>282814437
>they did put Light behind bars for several months. At first the killings stopped, but then they continued again.
Because they put Light behind bars after giving him days of prep time, no monitoring whatsoever (so he could go and bury his note) and on his own demand

This is such a retarded plothole. They used to follow him before that (which is how they found Misa in the first place) but they let him do his things in the most critical part of the investigation.

By the way it doesn't stop here. They release Misa to her own devices, no camera, no one tailing her, so she can get the note back from where Light buried it. Absolute insanity, given that she was proven to be Kira. Then when L dies everyone forgets about L's last plan (test the note).

Death Note is not very good. It's entertaining. It has an occasional nice scheme here and there, but overall it's kinda dumb.
>>
>>282813931
It wasn't just Light, L had cameras installed in two different homes, and the police watched like seven different people. L was suspicious of both families because of the circumstances around Raye Penber's death, and since it was still a mystery how Kira even killed people, finding nothing out of the ordinary while watching the cameras wasn't enough to exonerate them. That's why the next step was having the task force question the suspects about the case directly, with L taking it upon himself to approach Light. L's intuition was what made Light the lead suspect, not the only suspect.
>>
>>282814966
Not him, but I agree with what he says about how people who criticize Death Note just don't seem to have paid attention to it. It's been a while, but by my recollection, it was Light's suggestion to be put under observation, after he set his whole plan up. It's also not true they followed him everywhere before that. After removing the cameras in his room, they kept an eye on him, which was easy once he joined the investigation, but they didn't have a tail on him everywhere he went. They found Misa from forensic evidence on the tapes she sent to Sakura TV, before she interacted with Light in public. As for letting Misa (and Light) go, it was after the 13 day rule was discovered, and the whole task force of course believed that exonerated Light and Misa. I think L at that point knew something was wrong, but had no clue what it was, and couldn't justify keeping them under direct observation anymore. But again, it's been a while and I may be misremembering somewhat.

>it was Light's suggestion to be put under observation
Yes, that's exactly the issue. It counts for nothing because these retards let him do the setup. In well written Death Note, L would've asked Light's father to stay with him, preferably in place monitored with camera. You just would NOT let Light do what he wants after that. He can kill Misa at anytime, by the way, from L's perspective. It would make him look suspicious but who cares? You really don't want him to be left to his own devices at that point.
>It's also not true they followed him
They did. That's how they found Misa the moment she met him. And that was before the suspicions on him went from "maybe" to "yeah definitely". In a well written Death Note, there's 0 way for Light to get to that forest without being seen by L's guys. None.
>13 days rule
Misa was proven to be Kira by forensic evidence, rule or not. Again, she would not be able to move around without someone tailing her.
Ffs the killings restart the moment she leaves. It's so fucking stupid.

If you were there during the latest storytime people were bitching during these chapters. L had to grab firmly on the idiot ball for this to happen.
>>
I wonder what would have happened if Light's wristwatch had been lost or broken during the time his memories were gone?
>>
>>282816390
>>282816431
Are you implying they disregarded it because they disliked the confirmation that Light did not permanently reduce crime and all that's left of his influence is a weird cult hoping in vain that he'll return (which he can't because the notebook rules confirms that humans don't get an afterlife and can't return to life)?
>>
>>282816441
L didn't grab an idiot ball, he was shackled to an idiot ball and chain named the Task Force.

He had no justification for monitoring Light. As had been previously mentioned, after the camera incident L couldn't so easily convince Light's father to allow him to detain his son. If he just ignored the investigation team and did send someone in secret, it would be just a repeat of the FBI incident and if discovered, would completely shatter the trust of the investigation team and they might even turn against him at that point since L would have to turn to "dubious helpers" like the con artist and free-lancer spy, or once again some foreign organization, which without the investigation team's approval would lead to L become wanted or could cause a serious international incident.

Who is "L's guys"? Also see above.
>Misa was proven to be Kira by forensic evidence, rule or not.
No, Misa was only proven to be the one who made the videos, not as the actual killer. From the given knowledge the true killer tricked or manipulated Misa by yet unknown means to sent the video, but she didn't use the death note, else she'd be long dead.

>He had no justification for monitoring Light
Light literally met the proven second Kira the day right after the second Kira was supposed to meet Kira (Light was out there at the meeting spot btw).
Light and Misa's stories probably don't match at all. You don't even need to prove Death Note stuff. If you were to ask Light and Misa how they met and the last few days, their stories wouldn't match at all. Not before Misa lost her memory and even less after that. They'd be faced with a mountain of evidence.

Truth is, L was already thinking they'd detain Light. He was going to do it on his own, except... he didn't, he gave Light days to prepare and then accepted it (but then refused to let Light out when Light asked, which would be illegal normally, so which is it? Now he can act unlawfully?)

There is 0 way to rationalize L not asking Light's father to keep with his son at all times the moment 2nd Kira got found. It doesn't even have to be detaining him, just watching his son. It's fucking retarded. Death Note is stupid.

>Who is "L's guys"? Also see above.
Pic related. Definite proof they were tailing Light. Of course they would. Why the fuck wouldn't they?

>Misa was only proven to be the one who made the videos
That's more than enough. You don't let a proven Kira/Kira pawn at best to go unmonitored, much less after she saw L's face. This manga is shit

>Light and Misa's stories probably don't match at all.
I think in a real murder case that would be useful, but the Kira case would need way more than an inconsistent story to prove Light and Misa were guilty. What would the task force get out of questioning them at that point? They're already extremely suspicious of them, they just need hard evidence. Something direct supervision didn't yield for Light.
>Truth is, L was already thinking they'd detain Light. He was going to do it on his own, except... he didn't
When did he say that? I don't remember any dialogue or monologue regarding it. In fact L initially dismissed the idea of detaining Light, because they already observed him sitting along in a room for five days without getting outside information, and the killings still persisted regardless. He only agreed because he was curious what Light was planning and where it would lead the investigation. He wanted to see if Light could actually have the killings continue even after being fully detained. And even after Light was "proven" not to be Kira, he was still under suspicion to the point where L literally handcuffed himself to him.
>Now he can act unlawfully?
He's been doing that right along, it's nothing new.
>There is 0 way to rationalize L not asking Light's father to keep with his son at all times
Come on, that's a conflict of interest and you know it.
>Definite proof they were tailing Light.
Both shinigami would've noticed he was being tailed and Rem at least would've warned Light. Light would've just waited for a time when he wasn't being followed. But yes, having Mogi on him at that point would've complicated things for Light.
>You don't let a proven Kira/Kira pawn at best to go unmonitored, much less after she saw L's face.
She was arrested mere minutes after seeing L's face, and wasn't let out of constant surveillance until they got the Death Note and questioned Rem.

>>282817506
To be clear, I meant if Mogi was tailing Light when he went into the woods to bury the death note, not just tailing him in general.

>the Kira case would need way more than an inconsistent story to prove Light and Misa were guilty
They literally have no way to explain how they met each other on the day Kira met with the 2nd Kira and one of them is already a Kira.

In no world do they ever get to be alone after that. Because it's the Kira murders the police would have to take SO MANY MORE precautions to avoid things going haywire. That's why they put this blindfold on Misa and put her through inhumane detaining conditions, because Kira is just that dangerous. Why the FUCK would they let Light do whatever he wants when they have a free ticket to prove his involvement with Misa is unnatural and cannot be explained?
>When did he say that?
Actually he said he was going to "question him soon" because he was "almost definitely Kira" which is retarded (take him in NOW if he's almost definitely Kira). Close enough
>because they already observed him sitting along in a room for five days without getting outside information, and the killings still persisted regardless
Even Aizawa knew this proved nothing. Pic related
>He's been doing that right along, it's nothing new.
Yes, then it means the legality argument doesn't apply here, you can't weasel your way out of the fact L should have detained Light (with friendlier words, "Mr Yagami please stay with your son at all times for the next few days, we've got a hotel room for the two of you") the second Misa was caught. He has the friendly way I described with the father but if we're being realistic and pragmatic Light would've gotten the Misa treatment. The only reason he didn't is because he had a huge plot shield.
>Light would've just waited for a time when he wasn't being followed
That's assuming the shinigami would be able to tell him on the first time he was tailed (no messing up) and no, Mogi wouldn't drop his guard. If Light tried losing him then it'd just prove his culpability. It's checkmate. This is just badly written.
>>
>>282817506
>She was arrested mere minutes after seeing L's face
This part is fine
>let out of constant surveillance until they got the Death Note and questioned Rem.
This part is fucking dumb.

>Even Aizawa knew this proved nothing.
I wouldn't say it proved "nothing". Yes Light was free to leave his room, but he spent a considerable amount of time inside the room, with no way of knowing he was being watched (from the task force's perspective, obviously).
>it means the legality argument doesn't apply here
You're arguing with two different people just so you know. I didn't make any legal argument. L probably didn't detain and torture Light because he didn't have the evidence and certainty he did with Misa. I don't think legal justification factored into it at all. But another big reason is he already got to question Light many times. They work on the case together. Observing Light while also getting his assistance on the case is a better strategy than torturing him and risking the task force turning on him over it. I do however concede that detaining him at that time wouldn't have been a bad idea at all. But L did want to see if Kira would kill Misa, and Misa being detained meant the two of them couldn't talk anyway. He probably figured detaining Light would be an unnecessary precaution. But I agree that doesn't explain it away completely, and this point specifically may be an oversight in the story.
>That's assuming the shinigami would be able to tell him on the first time he was tailed
Not a difficult assumption to make, especially if Light told them to keep an eye out
>If Light tried losing him then it'd just prove his culpability.
All Light would have to do is walk to a corner store or something instead of the woods as soon as they tell him, and then go back home and do it another time. Nothing suspicious about that. Or maybe even wait for Rem to tell him Mogi's gone before he leaves his house.
>>
>>282818243
>he spent a considerable amount of time inside the room, with no way of knowing he was being watched
That's true, which is also why he could only pull it off with supernatural help. But Kira is supernatural, so... This didn't really prove his innocence at all
>They work on the case together. Observing Light while also getting his assistance on the case is a better strategy than torturing him and risking the task force turning on him over it
I fundamentally disagree with this assumption and it only works if you accept everything the author shits out without critical thinking
You know what was a better strategy than playing tennis matches and trying to watch Light's reactions to Kira stuff? Yagami Soichiro taking his family on a vacation trip at the mountain, with no TV/newspapers and keeping an eye on his son. One week is enough to build an incredibly powerful case against Light. That's all you need. No torture involved.
>All Light would have to do is walk to a corner store or something instead of the woods as soon as they tell him, and then go back home and do it another time. Nothing suspicious about that. Or maybe even wait for Rem to tell him Mogi's gone before he leaves his house.
You're missing the point. What if L isn't a fucking retard and has people watching Light and his house 24/7 instead of giving him free time to do what he wants, ESPECIALLY after the girlfriend that came out of nowhere right after Kira met Kira 2 was proven to be Kira('s pawn?) ?
>>
>>282818615
>But Kira is supernatural, so... This didn't really prove his innocence at all
No one said it did. All it means is they're not gonna get anywhere observing him directly. How would a week's vacation in the mountains with Light's dad watching him be any different or any better than L himself watching Light from 64 different angles when Light thinks he's alone? Again, speaking from the perspective of the task force.
>You're missing the point.
I already said L detaining Light wouldn't have been a bad idea. But they knew Kira could really only kill people, and was clearly very restricted in that regard. They didn't know how he killed or how much freedom he had in it exactly, but it was obvious with the stronger of the two Kiras detained, the only real strategy on the table for Kira was killing Misa. But of course Kira wouldn't know Misa was arrested unless he was Light, in which case killing Misa would implicate him. I think the odds of Kira being able to do anything before Misa gave them critical information would be pretty much zero. And in fact they were. Light was at a complete loss what to do, and was very lucky Rem came to him and told him Misa relinquished ownership of the Death Note, and he was also lucky Misa willingly lent him her notebook right after meeting him. If either one of those two things weren't the case Light would've been fucked. Adding to that, the whole plan that started with him asking to be detained, and ended with them catching Higuchi and getting his memories back, was such an insane longshot that there's no way L could've expected not detaining Light could've lead to any of that. And with how low he was on manpower, committing resources to extra surveillance wouldn't seem worth it. And as we just discussed, it's possible Light could've found a way around it anyway. My only point here is you could say this is a mistake on L's (or the writer's) part, but he didn't have to be the supreme retard you say he is to make such a mistake.
