In a generic mecha show Suzaku would be the heroic mc while Lelouch the villainous Char clone. Good and evil is a matter of perspective Lelouch is liked only because we see his POV and Suzaku is hated because he opposes Lelouch. This show is basically what if Gundam villain was right.

suzaku is hated because he willingly joins and aids in the furthering of the goals of the setting's snobby, elitist, smug world-conquering superpower whose modus operandi is to subjugate free nations and turn their inhabitants into second-class citizens. he does this with zero planning ahead, and not out of an honest desire for a peaceful resolution but because he wants to punish himself for killing his dad. if the show was from his POV everyone would have fucking despised it and asked for more lelouch screentime.
