Gon is the best written child in any manga, ever. If you look at every single decision he makes and the way he acts, you'll see that he's acting perfectly like an actual child. Every single shonen series has children or young teenagers making decisions that would be well beyond their own thinking, constantly acting as rational as possible and coming up with solutions an adult normally would. But Gon is a selfish, stubborn entity that constantly gives in to his emotions. Even his ability is something a child would come up with. "Oh, I want to shoot projectiles and make a sword from nothing!". He didn't even have a name for it until an arc later. But people are too used to a regular shonen protagonists that act like adults. Always making rational decisions, with their emotions only ever serving as some sort of temporary or permanent powerup when they need it. Gon got his power up too, but unlike every other shonen protag, it cost him everything. Because he's a child that was basically shown how to use real magic. He's not a psychopath at all, no. Just a child.
