Would Golden Kamuy have been better if they ditched all the silly stuff in favour of a more gritty story?

And rather then being full of homoeroticism it just gives us characters who are homosexual

No.
>>
>>282865516
This has to be the most retarded opinion about GK that I've ever heard.
>>
>>282865562
That's not silly, a man fucking a bear or the scene with the sea otter pheromones are silly
>>
>>282865516
Fuck no, I've known this franchise from the genderswap doujinshi and stay for the silly shit
>>
>>282865516
No, the silly stuff is what Noda is best at, his serious writing is not that good
>>
>>282865516
Some of it yeah, I like the humour but it encapsulates too much of the story.
>>
>>282865592
Which one the grit or the homoeroticism
>>
>>282865652
Both. Not to mentioned both comedy and homo stuff were heavily intertwined
>>
>>282865688
But why not go all the way and just make one or two homosexual characters, Noda shows his love for the male body but can't write a character who loves men because?

IMO, it would have all been balanced out in the end if Sugimoto and Tsurumi had both died when the train plunged into the bay.
>And rather then being full of homoeroticism
A lot of that stuff wouldn't have been seen as homoerotic before the 1960s. The "Gay Panic" in America has warped perceptions of past male emotion and physical interactions to a tremendous degree.

It might look like a silly show with a ton of dumbass gags, but the core theme it's tackling is Japan's cultural erasure of the Ainu people—stuff most Japanese folks would rather sweep under the rug. It's a pretty heavy-hitting story that dives into those uncomfortable truths, and the humor's probably there to keep it from getting too fucking oppressive.

There was that gay yakuza couple

Yes and there are also themes about national pride, how the state throws away veterans, man vs nature and how we're abusing it. Russia was also shown to be a power that erased the culture of natives but all of these theme can be lost or hard to focus one when you remember there is a character who has sex with a bear and the cast are cheering on him.
>>
>>282865516
it would lose its unique appeal
>>
>>282865516
No way. That makes it even better.

Making the final arc a series of movies is a mistake
>>
>>282866991
It's just Sapporo that got turned into movies, innit?
>>
>>282865516
no, it's better to have super serious grit mixed with offhanded hypermasculinity
>>
>>282865516
I mean there was no REAL point in having a guy running around jacking off on everyone other than the mangaka just wanted it. So I'm kind of torn. Personally yeah I wouldn't have any of that silly shit in there, but also I want the mangaka to tell the story he wants to tell including the good and the bad parts.

Also you have to wonder how much weird shit the editors actually stopped from happening behind the scenes.
>>
>>282867050
I read it was the two final arcs
>>
>>282865516
No, it was perfect the way it was. One of the best of this generation
>>
>>282865516
The (well-executed) tonal whiplash is what makes it entertaining. So no.
>>
I feel like Dogsred could use more silliness, the forest training was good but I guess Noda respects the sport too much to go apeshit on the rink

Japan has a hockey team?
