Its been 4 years since the manga ended and almost 3 years since the anime ended, but this series is still pretty popular and it has been engrained in pop culture and modern media, so much so that there will always be discussions about this series and also general discord around it(especially the ending). With that being said, I love the ending and honestly, now that the dust has settled I would really like to hear some more opinions on the ending. Personally, I feel like anime and media doesnt always have to be escapism from the real world and the theme of this story that war never ceases to exist as long as humans live on this earth is true even though it may seem like a ccliché.So what do y'all think about the ending after all these years?
Also I would like to say that I would really like if the japanese would make more manga series in which their aspects are deeply engrained in the horrors of war and how that affects every character and how there's always a bad person that is venerated by some but hated by others. In FMAB, I feel like the historic aspect and its correlation to ww2 is done great, and even though it may not be as gruesome and violent as aot, I for one still remember the scene where the amestrians are walking in line and everything is black and white except for their blue eyes. I personally really like this kind of stories and I think there should be more manga series like aot and fmab(in the history related aspect), but maybe there are and I just dont know about them, if so please give me some recommendations!
>>282887896The ending isnt great because it doesnt make sense at all for Eren to not know what he was doing at all and that it wasnt a plan. It just feels like a simple choice made by Isayama or his editors to remind everyone that genocide is bad and that Eren shouldnt be glorified. Which is obviously true, but he had all rights to defend his people if every other parts of the world wanted them dead
>>282887896Aot is still better than all shounen slop and isekais and whatever people are posting on here because it at least tried something as a story. Of course, it wasnt perfect and Isayama is not a godly writer but he did his job at least decently to still view this whole series as a great read/watch.
>>282887896Ending is bad but who cares atp. The One piece ending will probably be atrocious but the ride was still awesome and the same applies to aot
>>282887896>I would really like to hear some more opinions on the endingThen why did you come to a place that only seethes about the ending?
In short, the manga ending was pretty fumbled but the anime ending was mostly good. AoT is my favorite show of all time and I loved it from start to finish.
>>282887896It was decent but the post credits scene was weird to me and i didnt really understand the point of it
>>282888277Lmao there cant be only people hating on the ending here. And if they are, I would like to hear their opinions desu
The only thing I didn’t like about the anime ending is that they didn’t scrap the retarded 80% number. We didn’t need to know the number. We were just shown how brutal it was and we could be shown more clearly again. Picking 80% feels so bizarrely specific and the more you specify that it’s a really high number the harder Eren becomes to sympathize with. I felt like Eren wasn’t given enough redemption at the end because they insist on telling you just how horrific what he did was in such bizarre detail. It would be better if he was a bad guy but like a redeemable sympathetic bad guy.
>>282888369I read somewhere that the point of the post-credit scene was to further shock the audience but also show that while the cycle of life and maybe even titans continues it doesn’t continue with the story of trauma and unrequited love thanks to the actions of our protagonists. It’s not exactly what most people got. I think most people just got it saying everything starts over. We could’ve done with it desu.
>>282888369This is just a fan theory so dont take it for granted but, the first episode is partially named, “To You, in 2000 Years.” Taking that we could hypothesize that the entire show is what the boy at the end with the dog sees when he enters the tree and assumes the power left behind in Erens skull. In the Paths, the story would have been told in a blink of an eye to the boy. It reinforces Eren telling Armin it was all predetermined. Their journey was just a vision being experienced by the new Founding Titan.
>>282888416That doesn’t make sense to me. There’s no real reason to believe Eren even leaves a skull beyond. It’s just the worm origin of life thing lurking in the tree. Presumably, it’s possible that Titans can be brought back by encountering that thing but with a different context and story this time. After all, by the end of the story Eren chooses to forsake humanity for his friends. He achieved that, so it doesn’t matter if some random person in the future restarts the cycle. We also know the narrator of the story prior to the credits is Armin.
>>282888339Same here. I love every aspect of it and it felt like I was reading a history book at times which really made me love this series even more
>>282888416Eren never tells Armin it was all predetermined. In fact, Eren says to Armin it’s already been decided and Armin replies stating that he was the one who decided it, suggesting that it might have been decided but as a consequence of Eren’s choices rather than predetermined fate.
>>282888203>muh editors You schizos are still going on about this cope?>but he had all rights to kill 99.9% of the global human population (which consists of powerless civilians that had 0 plans or even means to cause harm to your home) because less than 1% of them wanted to attack his home, after he worked with Zeke set up the declaration of war in the first placeIt never ceases to amaze me at how genuinely psychotic some ending haters are here.
>>282888452The mythological and historical style of AoT is really special.
>>282888444The fact that Armin is the narrator is really cool and you can see Eren's eye color changing which I feel like is because Armin is forgetting certain aspects of his appearance which is kinda sad desu
>>282888382>the harder Eren becomes to sympathize withAlmost like, that's the fucking point....
>>282888203How does it not make sense? By the time Eren is admitting his motivations to Armin in Paths, his mind is a jumbled up mess because of the powers of the titans. As is often the case with people who commit terrible acts, they have a hard time understanding what their exact motives were. On one hand Eren wants to believe that he was motivated to save his friends and his island while eradicating the titans from the world, in some sense justifying his horrific actions, while on the other hand admitting that he both wanted to do it out of some quasi-psychopathic desire and having to do it because he boxed his fate in with his decisions. Remember that Eren in some sense knowingly set things in motion on a path that at some point could not be deviated from, and that included everything from killing his own mother to mass slaughter of innocent children. He is struggling to make sense of what he’s done and live with the guilt. That’s why he confesses not really knowing, suggesting maybe he wanted to. And that’s also why Armin replies with a confession of guilt in kind. Eren literally turned himself into a monster which had no obvious origin point. It was impossible for him to say how much of what he did was driven by what he experienced, what he thought it would achieve, and how much he just wanted to be a monster.
>>282888538What was Eren supposed to do?
>>282888538It’s not though and Isayama’s comments about the series confirm that. He had this retarded obsession with Himeanole and characters who were just born psychopathic but could be empathized with.
>>282888444We also know that Eren only cared for his friends to be safe and live happy lives(which they did) and I feel like he doesnt really care about Paradis being destroyed in the future for example, as we see in the post credits scene that its bombed and ruined and even though we dont know for certain if eren leaves a skull beyond, there wont be a curse of Eren as there was with Ymir so even if that kid turned into the founding titan, the events of "AOT 2" would be completely different from the original story
>>282888467Kek it is pretty nuts how some people just insist that the only good ending would be one where Eren just murders everyone. Kinda crazy lmao.
>Same old retards defending the same old shitRealismfags ruin everything and there's nothing you can say about this terrible story that hasn't been said a thousand times already
>>282888594Well, they kind of did. Mikasa seemed pretty fucking miserable and I’m sure their dead friend’s severed head traumatized them pretty good. Anyway, he couldn’t have known what happens to Paradis in the future to be fair but yeah, the point is that he chose his friends or his own impulses over everything.
I was so tired of aot by the time it ended desu
>>282887896The ending was decent imo but the fact that Isayama had to apologize for how he ended the manga to a public audience at anime nyc is crazy to me. And he was receiving death threats and messages from psychos on the internet because of how he ended it jc. For me at least this is the first time I've seen an author apologizing for anything regarding his story especially the ending, that mind you wasnt even that bad regardles of how much you try to hate on it for no reason
>>282888729I didn’t even know this happened. That’s insane.
>>282888604Isayama just wanted to out psychos and nazis by turning Eren evil
>>282888782Nazis are peaceful, anon
>>282888604anime isn't real life, a character dying in a manga isn't someone dying irl...sm.h.>ending lovers can't separate reality from fiction
>>282888558For most terrible people in history, their motifs for becoming evil is stupid and even though it may make sense at first later down the line they cant justify all the horrible things they've done for only a bad thing that happened in their lives and sad most terrible people forget what was the point of all of this and why they started doing all of this(Eren included). The difference I feel is that him and his people were ostracized by everyone and he didnt really have a choice and we as viewers can feel that because we have seen how much him and his people have suffered from ep 1, especially compared to the Marleyans. Also, his plan is horrible ofc but so was Zeke's and so would have been if The Marleyans destroyed Paradis completely
>>282888856Yeah thats what a nazi would say
>>282888951I’ve always thought one of the subtexts is the trauma and vitriol that came with essentially spending their entire lives at war as child soldiers with monsters who subject them to horrifically traumatic sights, only to find out they were actually at war with their own people made into monsters by their rivals, their rivals, and fact the entire world who not only wanted them dead but to suffer. I mean, it doesn’t really get more radicalizing than that.
>>282888478I love it when authors actually do care about world buildning
>>282888999Yes and can you blame someone for crashing out when they find out that? Especially that, eldians in paradis were ostracized by the whole world and also eldians in Marley were treated exactly like nazis treated jews in ww2.
>>282887896>So what do y'all think about the ending after all these years? It is still fucking dogshit, the only thing that has changed is that I dont really care anymore
>>282888109Fmab is a masterpiece i agree
>>282889088Why is it dogshit?
>>282889156I wont really waste my time arguing about this dogshit series with shit that has been said for over 4 years already other than, at a certain point, you have to come into terms with everyone being a fucking retard or the story just falls apart. For me, thats a deal breaker.Isayama knew what the goal was but he fumbled on how to get there. Call it editor meddling, bad writing or whatever, you can cope however you want.
I stopped caring after the basement reveal with the whole "we wuz jews!!!!!1111one"
>>282887896The ending is kino
>>282889402Retard
>>282888577Was Eren born psychopathic? I personally dont think so
>>282888729Isayama is a retard. He doesn't understand that The Mist is a 2 hour movie and AoT is multi volume story. You can't just do a stupid plot twist in the end.
>>282887896The most I care about AoT is a low, burning frustration is it's relation and comparison to Muv Luv. It should have been us, not you, it's not fair. I guess the manga was pretty good for awhile.
>>282889909It sucked and I knew it was going to happen. I wished it didn't go down that route.
Bumperino
Are there any good books that are similar to the entirety of Aot in terms of story or themes?
Bump
>>282892815Naruto's Pain Arc was the main inspiration for AOT and just like Eren, Pain was fully justified in razing Naruto's shitty village to the ground
>>282888467>>282888604What was the alternative again?
>>282892815Diary of Anne Frank
>>282892943Zeke's plan was the best outcome for everyone but SOMEHOW that was too fucked up for Eren.
>>282893028Zeke's plan was ethnic cleansing, retard
>>282890570It doesnt suck at all. Eren shouldnt kill 99% of humanity and a radical choice like that would be just stupid. Even if he did that there would be inner conflict between the eldians because not everyone agreed with Eren and his plan and I feel like Paradis would be bombed either way. Also, this way Aot would have a "happy ending" and that wouldnt fit the story and the fact that Eren also killed a LOT of innocent people and we've seen that in the manga. And why would he kill 99% of humanity? Do those innocent people dont deserve a chance to live happily like the people of paradis?
>>282893091Was still the best outcome due to this fucked up scenario. Eren's was the same thing but worse to an absurd degree. Armin's was collective suicide. Zeke's would've at least let Paradis live out their days in peace.
>>282893091That wouldnt make any sense at all. Eldians that live in Marley would still be ostracized by the marleyans and Eren with all his pals would live the most horrible outcome and that is to be caged and live meaningless lifes exactly as they did at the beginning of the series. The only ones that would benefit would be the Marleyans and other nations that already were profiting off of Eldians.
>>282892976How is it similar? Im just curious before i read it
>>282887896It all automatically turned to shit as soon as time travel and the Ymir Ex Machina was brought into the story, so there isn't really much to discuss.
>>282893647Jews and Nazis
>>282887896>>282893735It all automatically turned to shit as soon as they got to the basement and what was a cool mystery/horror/action manga became /his/ autism.
>>282893735Ymir was fine Mikasa ex Machina was the problem
>>282892815Didn't Aot bordeline rip off shit from The Eternal Champion? i remember that even some context and phrases were similar, like muh "kill them all"
>>282893460>basically genocide is the best outcomelol
>>282894095I've read eternal champion, I don't think they have similar at all.
