They won't want to watch incomplete adaptations. Too many people wait till things are over and then binge it and move on to do the same to something else. But reading those stories in the moment to moment was were we were engaged. It's were the story is elevated. A good ending can often be a nice pay off but a lack of one doesn't change what we did in the time we spent reading. While a bad ending can taint everything.

This is the only zombie story I can think of that ever bothered to mention that they'd eventually rot to nothing. It's also got a lot of fun tension with the various members of the cast having to decide just how much they're going to let go of the rules and mores of the "old world" in the name of survival and achieving success in the post-apocalyptic world.Also Kohta is the best otaku character ever written. He actually gets to be a Chad, and actually gets a girl or two.

Takashi, Rei, Kohta, Saya, Saeko, and Shizuka all grapple with this and some handle it better than others. Some of them have 'awakening' moments where they realize there's no longer any of the old world's limits on their behavior. Saya does after her parents are dead. Kohta does after Asami dies. Then there's Saeko, who seems to have realized it from the beginning and fully reveals that to Takashi when they're staying the night at the shrine.Even Shizuka, the fanservice character, wrestles with it, and sometimes I suspect that her ditzy behavior is kind of an act, and a part of her cope. Her actively trying to ignore that the world she knew is over.

I remember over a decade ago, when HOTD was still fresh, Shizuka wasn't as well-regarded, certainly not compared to Saeko but even not compared to Saya or Rei. But the board has gradually taken note of her and I think these days she's second place in /a/'s heart after Saeko. Which is where she should be.
