Since Fujimoto confirmed he always planned for Asa to be a bait-and-switch protagonist, I think he fucked up by giving her too much protagonism early on.A decoy protagonist can definitely work, but you can't keep it ambiguous for too long who the actual protagonist is. If you spend too long with the decoy protagonist or give them too much agency, the audience might get more attached to that character than with your actual MC and you don't want that.Tsumi to Batsu no Spica (pic rel) is a great example of how to do it right.>Set up as a romance story about a normal teacher getting roped up with his cute but crazy student>The teacher turns out to be a piece of shit who killed a child and his own pet cat to protect his image. Spica, the main girl, tricks him into killing himself by drinking poison. It turns out Spica is the actual main character, and the manga is really an episodic crime thriller about a telepathic high school girl murdering serial killers a la Dexter. No ambiguity on what the reader is in for.If Fujimoto kept the POV on Denji after chapter 102, this wouldn't be a problem. But instead he brought the POV back to Asa and made her the focus for the next 20-ish chapters. It also seemed like they were setting up some kind of future growth for her with the chicken dream and the guilt-based powers. So people got the impression that she was the ACTUAL new protagonist, which made it confusing when she got sidelined so hard. This was obviously not a misconception exclusive to the Western fanbase considering that Fujimoto was directly asked about this in the interview.Asa should have just been a supporting character who comes in and out of Denji's story while dealing with her own shit. At least that way her lack of screentime wouldn't feel out of place.
