Does anyone know if "Suruga-jō Gozen Jiai" by Norio Nanjō, the book that Shigurui was based off of, is worth a read? The manga doesn't adapt the whole thing, so either Fujiki and Irako are the best story arc or the rest just wasn't seen as necessary. I know that the mangaka reportedly had to take mental health breaks during publication because he said that creating such a depressing and violent story was starting to mess up his head, so maybe he just said he wasn't finishing the book at some point.
