Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of it?

It had great character developments.
>>
>>283077797
It tried to do something different but forgot to be good. Un-Go is much better.
>>
>>283077797
It's no masterpiece
>>
I like Earth-chan
>>
I don't even care about the flaws or the rushed pacing, the sheer scope and ambition make it one of the best shows of the 10s. I miss when we still got high concept, high effort originals like this.
>>
>>283079678
Has there been anything to match the scope and ambition of Samurai Flamenco and Concrete Revolutio since? I love Pluto but that's adapting Urasawa directly
>>
>>283077797
was a good show
>>283079156
she was great

This
>>
>>283077797
It was great. It didn't really stick the landing and some standalone eps sucked but it had a vision with soul behind it.

Feels like originals that are fun to theorize with /a/ and have actual OC are so fucking rare now.
>>
I think it's the kind of thing you'd enjoy much more if you had knowledge of the last 50 years of Japanese pop culture (and I didn't).

Still, it's well made and pretty ambitious, so while I admire it I didn't love it.
>>
>>283077797
The most "needed one more episode" show of all time
Still love it and have it as one of my top shows either way
>>
As someone who has never seen it, what makes this show ambitious and high scope?
>>
>>283077797
Still one of the most unique anime I've watched
>>
>>283077797
I miss the ending of the first season
>>
>>283083811
It's a big remix of classic SF manga and tokusatsu, jumping around in time to feature different media trends and reinterpreted seminal works in Japanese pop culture. As you might expect the end result is more than a bit messy and can be hard to digest if you didn't already have an encyclopedic knowledge of post-WWII pop culture history.
>>
>>283077797
S1 was breddy gud, S2 was weak but gave us conclusion so I can't be too upset.
Maybe if S2 had been 13 episodes and gotten an additional 3-6 months of development.
>>
Does anyone still have the image of all the references in the series? It really shows how broad the scope they are trying to cram in.
>>
I'll be honest in saying this would do a lot better today than it did when it aired due to the fight against the literal machine plot point. The Op was and still is a banger.

It's one of my top 10 all time favorites. It successfully mixes Giant Robo OVA's oldschool hero pastiche nature with Mamoru Oshii's anti-ANPO boner, and wraps it in Shou Aikawa's absurdism and Yutaka Nakamura's animation.

Loved the first season, the second season/timeskip had fast as shit pacing so you can tell that they clearly didnt flesh shit out enough despite the slwoer first season, especially the ending. Not surprised though since bones always drop the ball during second seasons for anime originals.
>>
it still on my disk, I have to finish it someday.

not just pop culture, it incorporates almost every single notable Japanese political incident and movement from WW2 onwards

It's the exact kind of autism that gets me going. I don't think I can say I was aware of even 20% of the references, both of historical events and pop culture, but other stuff like the kerberos saga, GR OVA, Sakamichi no Apollon and the several toku and older anime I knew growing up all painted a general picture that could be explained by Japan having been like this anime. It felt like watching that Adriano Celentano video where he sings gibberish and it looks like spoken english before I learned english.

>>283077797
I need to rewatch, but I liked it. Second season was a bit of a disappointment, but I do remember becoming an Emifag near the end.

Still one of my favorites.
Though watching it with /a/ elevated the experience multiple times because of all the culture & reference discussion
Learned a bunch. Don't think there's been anything like that since.

>>
>>283077797
It had a few cool moments and the witch girl was cute, but on the whole it was a meandering badly paced mess.
>>
>>283086969
I never got the pacing complaint, I think mixing it up but still being episodic was great, kinda like Kamen Rider Kiva, except good.
>>
The most "you must be at least this japanese to understand" show of all time.
>>
COME ON EQUUS READY GO
>>
Does anyone remember what song the S2 OP sampled from? Someone back then noticed it was lifted almost wholesale.
>>
>>283087153
Season 2 definitely feels too short.
>>
I still have the anime OST saved and listen to it occasionally.
>>
>>283086843
Cool as nuclear winter.
>>
>>283087601
Sure, but not to its detriment IMO. It's supposed to be a story cut short due to superhumans leaving. Its faux-history angle works better if the climax doesn't go beyond that, otherwise it loses the illusion that it could be our alternate past. Unsolved loose ends are common in reality, and the clash between that and childish ideals of justice is the main theme of most of Aikawa's stuff I like.

I love when you have an ensemble cast you can go through.

I don't see the link, to be honest, and I'm an fan of The Unlimited. There are plenty of esper stories out there that centre the 'people with superpowers vs. the government' narrative, like sCRYed or Ajin.

>>
>>283077797
It had too many fillers in the 2nd part, it could have used one or two episodes for main plot.
Otherwise it was really fucking good
I'm still mad we didn't get the fight against metal robo guy from that one ED

I barely remember it
