Back from Kumeta's break.

Shibuya Near Family chapter 144: Ikko works frantically at her desk

>*Scribble scribble*

>...Ikko-chan is studying...

>Paper: What breed of dog is...
>3. Papillon

>Wait.
>What's with these questions?

>Q: Where is the moyai statue currently located?
Moyai are stone statues from the village of Niijima, modeled after the Easter Island moai statues. One well-known moyai was until recently situated near Shibuya Station.

>Also,

>What's the meaning behind these mysterious symbols?

>I'm leaving now.

>(*Fwhoooo*)

>(*Brrrr*)
>It got really cold,
>all of a sudden.

>Yeah.
>It really does feel like autumn has disappeared.

>It's not like it's much of an issue or anything, though.
>Sure it is.

>Taking the four seasons,
>Right to left: Spring, summer, autumn, winter
>and removing autumn...

>Is like taking *ki-shou-ten-ketsu*,
>and removing the *ten*.
"Ki-shou-ten-ketsu" is a traditional Japanese (and Asian) four-part storytelling structure. Its four parts are introduction (起, "ki"), development (承, "shou"), twist (転, "ten"), and conclusion (結, "ketsu").

>It's like taking a yonkoma, and removing the third panel.
>What's that supposed to mean?
Yonkoma literally means four panels, and generally refers to a comic with four panels in a single column going from top to bottom. It's a common format for gag manga series and such, and ki-shou-ten-ketsu is a typical way to structure such strips.

>Still, I think you're onto something.

>I mean, doesn't it feel like a lot of things in the world are losing their *ten*?
>Like what?

>Like, people who are used to watching short videos...
>Fast-forwarding to the end of a story, skipping the *ten*.

>But the *ten* is really important, isn't it?

>It's the loss against a rival that leads to more training.

>Or the couple that has gotten all lovey-dovey
>getting in an argument over something stupid.

>But, reading that kind of stuff is a pain.
>Paper: Reader survey
>And surveys apparently show that they're usually not very popular either.

>Then, I guess what's popular is winning effortlessly,
>or always being lovey-dovey, all the time.

>Thanks to our focus on time and cost efficiency,
>modern Japan...

>Has lost its *ten*.
>Top to bottom: Ki, Shou, Missing, Ketsu

>Really, since there are so many talented kids these days,
>many of them don't ever experience hardship or setbacks.

>We're losing our autumn...
>Because we've lost our *ten*.

>Rather than hoping for autumn,
>we should be looking for any *ten* we can find.

>But, if you just live your life normally,
>you're unlikely to run into any sort of *ten*.

>All right, everyone. Take your seats, please.

>Today, I have someone to introduce.
>This is our new transfer student.

>Sankou Mame. Nice to meet you.

>There's the *ten*!
>Background: (Ten)kousei
The word for transfer student is 転校生 (tenkousei), which starts with the same kanji as is found in ki-shou-ten-ketsu.

>Th-the rival makes her appearance!
>What?

>(*Badum badum*)
>(*Excited*)

>(*Staaaare*)

>A-are they...
>Expecting something from me?

>That girl in particular...
>(*Staaaaaare*)
>I've been searching for someone like you,
>*ten*.

>To put it simply: You are the third panel,
>Sankou Mame-san.
Her name is evidently a pun on "san koma me" (3コマ目), which means "third panel".

>Now come, turn the boring routine of our daily lives upside-down!
>That's the duty of the transfer student!

>Since time immemorial, transfer students have been the ones to get involved in all sorts of commotion!

>My job as a transfer student just got a lot more difficult.

>Do you have any particular talents?
>Talents, huh... Umm...

>I guess I know "Shibuya" pretty well.

>She really is your rival, Ikko-chan.

>N-no...
>I mean, she says she knows Shibuya well, but she's still just a transfer student, right?

>Paper: Shibuya Proficiency Test - Shibuken
The test seems to be modeled on tests such as the Kanji Aptitude Test (Kanken) or Japanese Language Examination (Goken).

>Left paper: Toka Ikko - 242 points. Right paper: Sankou Mame - 750 points.

>(*Ding ding ding*)
>(*Gloom*)

>Ikko-chan lost!
>(Gasp!)
>Ikko-chan actually lost in a Shibuya competition!
>There's your *ten* for you.

>You are hereby stripped of your Shibuya Duty armband.

>This is so humiliating...!
>Well, a lot of Shibuya residents don't know much about the city despite living there.

>How nice.
>We got our lost *ten* back.
>I'm not happy about this at all!

>Please, don't be so disappointed.
>You still have a chance to restore your honor.

>You see,
>Top to bottom: Ki, Shou, Ten
>now that we've progressed through the *ki*, *shou*, and *ten*...

>We'll leave the *ketsu* to you, Ikko-san.

>What's the *ketsu*?
>The punchline, right?

>I can't...
>Do something like that.

>(*Depressed...*)
>(*Setback*)
>Punchline..
>You're still doing panel three.

>This is bad... I can't let myself lose to those Mizkan-like eyes...
Mizkan is a vinegar brand with a distinctive logo consisting of three lines on top of a circle.

>Shibuya Duty Diary - I wouldn't mind losing the third period at school.

>Sidebar: It seems that the Moyai has been moved to the plaza on the western side of Shibuya Fukuras for the duration of the redevelopment.

Thanks for reading. I'm sick, so come up with a funny conclusion yourselves, please.

Do you think the new girl will be a permanent addition to the cast? That one imaginary friend transfer student never appeared again, from what I recall...

every time shibuya is mentioned somewhere, I think of ikko. like, how did she survive the shibuya arc from JJK?

then make the first page be ikko's mom screaming in horror with a "how did this happen?" in the corner. Kumeta should hire us already.

Seconding 0. Kumeta is genuinely really fucking good and his style is extremely sharp and appealing.
I do admittedly like his character designs from SZS more, but SNF is admittedly no slouch either. Even if Ikko's hair looks like jam.

yeah you only need a glance to recognize it's him. that also applies to his writing style.
