The girls are all well defined and have good chemistry not just with him but amongst themselves as well. And perhaps best of all, as far as a one cour light novel adaptation goes, it actually feels like it ends with a sense of accomplishment rather than just being a cliffhanger. There's a few dangling threads but they feel more sequel bait. There's a whole civil war plot that's finished with a solid beginning middle and end.

There's always going to be a few odd ones made that are "pure" battle harem/battle school harem to satisfy the nostalgic otaku market, but as things stand Isekai has made it redundant. If you still want to read a Battle Harem series that has withstood these changes and is basically a living fossile, just read To Aru Majutsu no Index and its spinoffs. The main story is over 60 volumes long already.
