After a while the mangaka decided to switch protagonists to the new characters we've been seeing like the Newspaper club. In about seven to ten chapters they completely take over for the rest of the run going into the spinoff/sequel that's all about them

The Simpsons is the most commonly cited example of this. It is only at 35+ seasons because it still sells well and makes money. As such, the quality has taken a steep nosedive from the golden years, and it often does the bare minimum to hit the necessary minimums for a Simpsons episode. While Asobi Asobase is definitely not the best it has ever been, it is still consistently funny and enjoyable. If we use the Simpsons example, it is more of a season 8-12 right now. Most of them use their relationship as the jumping off point and focus more on how other characters react to them. Are they my favorite chapters? No. But they are spread out enough and balanced in their comedy that they do not ruin my view on the series.
