He gave his character an ideology that simply doesn't work, and no matter how fine it is to endure great pain for a path you think is right for the sake of others you can't fix stupid with it. Vinland Saga is ultimately a modern progressive's take on the past, and is incapable of resisting the urge to show anything but the beliefs that you're supposed to agree with in any light other than cartoonishly evil and stupid. He doesn't understand Vikings, he doesn't understand Christianity, he doesn't understand the warrior spirit, he doesn't understand why anyone would think differently than him. Having views different from him is in his eyes not simply a disagreement or a mistake, but a flaw in your moral character. The author is the type that calls you evil for trying to be good in any way he doesn't understand. That's why people don't like this manga.

I'd argue Kenshin's commitment to not kill his enemies is never really tested. He still beats his enemies (albeit non-lethally) and they just stop being a problem forever for one reason or another. There aren't a lot of consequences for him not killing someone who really needs to die (his most evil enemies like Jin-e and Shishio just die anyway), his fights are just a bit harder than they really need to be.
