How did the OVA market look back in the day? I started to watch anime from viral gifs, and it looks like a scam, mostly. A mosaic of everything popular at the time of release, with bad pacing, in the best case, you get okaish animation + fancerivice + ost, but it's not a library of masterpieces

Still had plenty of memorable titles.
Gunbuster, Golden boy, Record of Lodoss War off the top of my head.
It's a cool format for series that are too short for a single cour or too long (and expensive) for a movie.
Shame that nowadays ti's pretty much used just for an extra episode with fanservice.
