Her entire character is just very complex in how it's being presented. I don't even know how to describe her situation without constantly diverting into other topics of the story. Her husband was a scumbag who left her after she got pregnant, fuelling her general mistrust and her dislike of *his* child. She's a single mother, which is inherently unattractive to most potential partners, yet she's still young enough to want to realistically re-marry. Her daughter is very likely autistic, which makes her more difficult to raise to begin with. She comes from a family that made her feel like she always has to present herself as high class, fuelling her twisted sense of perfectionism, which in turn makes a difficult child seem even less desirable. Despite that, she loves her daughter dearly, and her daughter loves her back. Then you have an evil witch whispering into her daughter's ears about how she isn't a good mother, since she lashes out from time to time and might even have a mild case of BPD. She's a fuckup, but a fuckup to be pitied, which is the whole point. We see what happens to Maria when she tries to distance herself from her mother: She becomes miserable, filled with hate and bitterness. We can see this in real life plenty of times, people who distance themselves from their parents often end up retarded (though there are exceptions, don't get me wrong). There are no easy solutions to these circumstances, and I appreciate that the story makes it a point that neither blissful ignorance nor edgy nihilism lead to good outcomes.
