Well it probably couldn't be something rooted in/is an aberration of western modern fantasy given that all of that is just Tolkien. The question then is if there is a Japanese fantasy deeply rooted in Japanese folklore that influenced other later works

I don't think there's a perfect 1:1.
Tolkien is so deeply ingrained in western fantasy that it's hard to even name a western fantasy story that isn't influenced by it, either directly or indirectly.
Hell, it even influences a lot of Japanese fantasy. Dragon Quest itself is inspired by Wizardry, which is inspired by D&D, which is inspired by Tolkien.

I guess Journey to the West is probably the closest, but even that doesn't match just how pervasive Tolkien influence is.
