When is the last time we saw a 3 shade shadow anime? This is something I can't remember being used recently at all... It was a staple during the 80s/90s but even really expensive properties these days like Gintama, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Attack on Titan only used 2 shades.

Yes, fujos absolutely lap it up it's making gigantic money.
I guess people on /a/ that never interact with Japan don't really experience whats popular on the ground. I guess there is also a strong male bias here so nobody actually goes to places like Ikebukuro.

https://collabo-cafe.com/page/5/?s=Gintama

Just check here. There has been something Gintama themed every month for the least 10 years.
I've seen plenty of Gintama itabags around, not as often as more popular stuff but it has a dedicated long time fanbase.

Not a lot but I can't remember it being this... hmm on the nose. Can you name a few examples. Most of the things I remember turned out to be actually 2 shade.

Last season I can't remember a single one.

Basically "No Shade":

Dan Dan Dan
Hoseki no Ruri
Yofukashi no Uta
Seishun
Mizu Hamoutsukai
Tate Yusha S4
City
Mynoghra
Nana Ouji
Ame to Kimi to
Futari Solocamp
Food Cort
Butamen
Dekin no Mogura
Puniru
MuuMuu
Takopii no Genzai
Sakamoto
Koujo Denka no Kateikyoushi
Yuusha Party S Rank Hirowareru
Bad Girl
Kizetsu Yuusha to Ansatsu Hime
Kijin Gentoushou

2 Shade:
Kijin Gentoushou
Moonrise
Leviathan
Bullet

Zero 3 Shades.

people are evolved and enlightened enough to realize that kagenashi is simply better for animation. there will always be stragglers and hylics who say that the drawings look unfinished without shading, but nobody really cares about them.
>>
>>283187372
Congratulations on your reduced watch list anon and thanks for letting us know.
I know it's unconsivable here on /a/ to talk about things that aren't waifus and powerleve jerkoff plot but this isn't a general thread.
I am very specifically talking about the shading style of the anime totally irrespective of the actual anime, it's plot or any characters. Just the shading and the artstyle. The almost forgotten 3 shade style.

>>283187394
I does produce easier animation and more moeblobable characters yes.
>>
>>283186770
3 shades was an OVA thing. TV anime usually didn't get it. Like most "Why doesn't anime look like THIS anymore" the answer is always the same: the death of the OVA.
>>
>>283187406
yeah, the shading style is kind of unique because the director also worked in fma and many old shows. still, i just couldn't like this show SINCE there are many other good shows airing this season
>>
I like how nobody could tell OP when the last time we saw a 3 shade anime

I was about to tell him not so long ago in Gundam SEED: Freedom but then I actually went to get a picture and realized it's 2 Shaded. All of it even the old ones. It's was just heavily 2 shaded.

Violet Evergarden. Also, both God Eater in 2015 and Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine in 2017 were 4(!)-tone. You'll occasionally see it for specific shots in other anime like picrel and iirc Wistoria, but it's pretty expensive to do and in any non-KyoAni scenario it tanks animation quality.
>>

Are those really the same thing as an OVA in terms of the financial model, because it's the financial model that allowed them to throw them out there, put a lot of money into the art detail, and make as weird a concepts as possible? Everyone was making OVAs. Random ass corporations were making anime OVAs because you don't need many eps, and you just put more into those eps, hence all the "why doesn't anime look like this anymore?" I don't know if you can have an original video animation with a non physical media world. I just checked and they are calling those ONAs, original net animations. Functionally the same thing... maybe? Like you said, there aren't many of them. Perhaps purely because it's not the boom years anymore... but then again, that can't be it either, because more anime is made now than ever before. Hmm. Fuck it. I don't know what I'm talking about.
>>
>>283186770
I can't get over how gorgeous this show looks.
>>
>>283187786
I'd argue it's way more complicated.

It's the boom years alright but not as you imagine them.

Back in the day anime had no financing at all, so they made OVAs. Today anime has all the financing this is why people are making 12 episode shows of EVERYTHING. Anime has x10 the money it had when OVAs where made. So there no need to make OVAs since you can just adapt one of the countless manga and LN into a full sized anime because all the manga and ln publishers already own the rights. It wasn't as integrated back then.

Let's take a look at FLCL that came out in Spring 2000.

Spring 2000 Season was :

Love Hina
Yugioh
Ayashi no Ceres
Gensoumaden Saiyuuki
NieA Under 7
Seikai no Senki
Sakura Taisen
Daa! Daa! Daa!
Boys Be...
Gate Keepers
Monster Farm: Legend e no Michi (Monster Rancher)
Transformers: Car Robots (Transformers: Robots in Disguise)
Hidamari no Ki
DokidokiDensetsu: Mahoujin Guruguru
Ginsoukikou Ordian
Fabre-sensei wa Meitantei
Time Bokan 2000: Kaitou Kiramekiman

So 17 brand new shows.

There was also some heavy hitters ongoing

One Piece
Great Teacher Onizuka
Hunter x Hunter
Meitantei Conan
The Big O
Crayon Shin-chan
Ojamajo Doremi Sharp
Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo
Zoids
Kochi Kame
Corrector Yui
Mushrambo
Sazae
Chibi Maruko
Shuukan Storyland

So 17 New + 15 Ongoing = 32 in Spring 2000

10 OVAs, 6 Movies.

In contract Spring 2025 had

49 brand new TV shows
13 Ongoing shows
6 ONAs of varying lenght some being full 24 episodes other 6 like Takopii
A few 1 episode animes like Shinsei Galverse, Lupin the IIIrd: Zenigata to Futari no Lupin,
20 Anime Movies out of that 7 feature lenght and 4 recap movies
About 20+ various 1~5 minutes specials from Lycoris to Maomao

If you don't think it's the boom years I don't know what it is. There has never been more anime made in he history of anime on a seasonal basis. Not in terms of movies, not in therms of TV shows not in terms of "OVA" if they're the same as "ONA"
>>
>>283187489
This is Alya-san, not Violent Eversharted
>>
>>283188010
But this doesn't answer why OVAs often used three tone shading, whereas modern anime barely ever does. I thought it was that more money was put into the OVAs. Is it that there's more money in anime overall and more anime than ever, but it's more thinned out, so each individual OVA production could afford more elaborate shading?
>>
This kind of shading was never, at any point in history, as common as you think it was
Time and scheduling is at least as important as budget when it comes to anime production, and 80s OVAs did not have the same limitations in those respects as modern TV anime
Please lurk more and watch more anime before making sweeping oldgoodnewbad statements

Alya in your picture is a lightly 2 shaded anime with extremely complex round eyes a style used in many waifu anime before like Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. And yes Violet Evergarden.Wistoria also falls int this category.

Violet Evergarden being a lightly 2 shaded show with complex eyes exactly like Denpa Onna, Wistoria and Alya san

Godeater is actually was 4 shaded in some scenes so I'll give you that.
Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine I haven't seen but from youtube it seems that you're right.

3 Shaded anime is anime that tries to immigrate global illumination by separating colors into 3 parts that are supposed to provide depth information.

For example in OPs picture

The skin color and clothes directly in the sunlight are drawn one color
The part that obstruct the said sunlight are drawn in a dark shaded color
And finally parts that stick out and cast a shadow like his nose and mouth and eye sockets ears are drawn another even darker color.

If video game terms 3 shading in anime is basically RTX. It also functions like that too in the fact that it requires extremely skilled animators able to imagine global illumination and drawing it. So it ups the budget and time to produce a single scene.

This style used to be popular with OVAs and some anime back in the 80s/90s a lot of people remember this fondly because most of the best anime had it but it wasn't a universal thing.

TL;DR it adds additional 3d depth to images.

Thats probably because you've been conditioned to associate this art style with fujoshi content.
Males are very easy to please with big tits and butts and curvy or cute figures.
Females on the other hand like to ogle the muscles, lips and like manly features.
So usually fujo shows have heavy shading to show off the muscles and lips eyes of the characters to give additional impact to emotions.

it has nothing to do with "3" shading tho
it's just how they show form with shadow
your perception of the same color affected by surrounded colors
you can download something like KK and play with cell shader and shadow softness/hardness sliders to see the same effects
even if some frames have another dark cast shadow the main effect comes from planes and saturated colors+some filter

Very few male centric anime go heavy into mega muscle shading. It was really popular in the 70s/80s with the maccho era where Japan saw American Action Heroes like Schwarzeneger and Van Dam and said we'll make that.

Today the only show that goes crazy with it is Baki and a few others.

Some of the regular, animated scenes in this show could pass for static illustrations almost, they're clearly doing a far better job at making this than you see in most other anime.

Yeah, he has one assassin skill "conceal presence" and that makes him an assassin? That's enough to put "assassin" in the title? The animation is outstanding, but the story and characters could be better

Other than the ambitious shading and Alisa being smoking hot, it had two particularly good episodes that saved the writing side from being totally forgettable. So overall, far from my worst dickwatch.
>>
>>283186770
Pure black shading > all.

They still haven't coped with Mushoku Tensei.

>Zenshuu
This show got mogged by the in-universe film. Would much rather have watched that in stead of pretentious mangaka self suck
But the art was good, lotta soul in places

>Is it that there's more money in anime overall and more anime than ever, but it's more thinned out, so each individual OVA production could afford more elaborate shading?
NTA but I think that was what he was implying.

OVA's weren't plagued by crunch and unreasonable deadlines while their creators were given far more creative control. This has happened to every artform. The 70s were the golden age of cinema, the bankers noticed, invested a lot of money in exchange for mass production and creative control, now we have slop. Belle Époque was the golden age of painting, the bankers noticed, invested a lot of money in exchange for mass production, now we have bananas taped to walls. The 80s were the golden age of design, the bankers noticed, now we have corporate memphis. Every art form goes through the exact same process of being appropriated, streamlined and dumbed down by investors. If you don't like it, get rid of capitalism.

How can you possibly be this obtuse?
>>
>>283197917
Banking = capitalism.
>>
>>283198011
I didn't say banking, I said the bankers. Again, obtuse.

Eh, the final Gintama seasons were full of still shots. The art looked good, but no way it felt high budget.

The bankers have been around for thousands of years, but capitalism for only a few hundred. You are actually retarded.
>>
>>283198202
Let me guess, you've been duped by your fucked up education system to believe that Sumerian granaries were actually banks. But no. Banking as it is currently understood was born at the exact same time and as a part of the same transitional process as capitalism in the 17th century.

No. It strictly requires chicken cypionate, rice ace and broccoli enanthate

Why is it always random isekaishit that gets quality like this?
>>
>>283198737
Isekai rarely looks this good, low budget stuff like midnogra or water magician is the norm.
>>
>>283198913
Those were low budget? The fuck?
>>
>>283198980
Mynoghra was definitely microscopic budget, Water Magician was ambitious, but ran out of money.
>>
>>283199065
I thought both looked fine. Good even. Perhaps my idea of low budget is outdated or something.

man rezero is fucking garbage

Mynoghra and the later episodes of Water Magician suffered from limited animation and low detail.

Who's sucking off who? The mangaka is 100% fictional. Zenshu is not based on any manga, it is as original as original gets.

I could only think of SEED when they set up that the protagonist's struggle was not killing people. Hopefully this also ends with him going home and fucking the elf on a beach immediately.

All you need is an elf as the main love interest.

I mean, most fantasy anime has that.
