why did it flop so bad?
>>283188903It was a late 90s Sunrise anime with no nudity, so Outlaw Star and Brain Powerd beat it in that aspect and managed to finish the shows without being cancelled for years and need the help of Cartoon Network to finish the show on a much worse and cheaper looking animation thanks to the switch to digital in 2003 also Brain Powerd did the retarded tomato shit before it, no idea why people at Sunrise were pushing for that so hard
classic japanese shit taste
I wouldn't say it flopped. It's an anime original with 2 seasons when they didn't even intend on getting a 2nd season. It's not some mega popular phenomenon in Japan (or outside for that matter) but as far as I can tell it's pretty fondly remembered.
>>283188903>what if bruce wayne had a robot and batgirl was an android>flopsthats when i knew humanity was cooked
>>283188903You're a louse, OP
>>283188903I have tried to watch this on 3 separate occasions and every time I end up dropping it by episode 6 out of boredom. I dig the characters and the designs and the premise with everyone forgetting everything but the individual episodic stories just don't hold my interest.
>>283189706it flopped so hard they canned half of the first season, japan wasn't having it at all
>>283188903It still gets new merch occasionally, so I'd say it's not the biggest flop
>>283190049I suspect that Wowwow's expectations for a new IP on a premium satellite channel were a bit too high, or they were just doing the bare minimum to fulfill their agreement with Sunrise. From what data I can find, they never re-aired the first season and didn't air the second season either. Plus, a lot of the channels that did rebroadcast the first season only did so about two years after it had ended.

The show is basically Batman TAS mixed with Evangelion.
>>283190853Honestly I think the only thing that might have been inspired by Evangelion is Dorothy. Any other kind of similarities are likely because they both took inspiration from the same shows and movies.

>>283190210>didn't air the second season eitherDamn, they really just dropped it altogether.
>>283188982Fpbp also weird that Brain Powerd did better than Big O in terms of ratings in Japan, but nowadays no one seems to remember it for the most part, and yeah...season 2 of the Big O was shit compared to the first season
>>283194290Brainn powered was strictly aimed at the japanese audience. Big O was intended for both the japanese and western audience giving it a broader appeal which is why you still have people talking about it.
>>283190210Doesn't banrise prioritize gundam over everything else?
>>283189827Season 2 tries to tell a story but it's a mess because lol konaka.
It was a wild time, the late 90's. TV shows were pulling off movie quality animation more often, and then every body switched to cel animation and the technical expertise revereted back to zero.
>>283196133people only talk about it because of toonami it's the same as what happened to Voltron
The OP was so shit everyone except the deaf and blind immediately tuned out
>>283197609Not really, go back and watch any long running anime from that era, you'll have one or two decently animated scenes with the rest of the episode being low quality and off model. OVAs were more consistent because they only ran for 5-10 episodes at most and didn't have to worry about running out of budget.
>>283197764No
>>283188903A shame, but I still liked it.
>>283197743Fuck you, I liked it.

>>283199969Second is boring but beats the grating first one
>>283188903Story not fleshed out enough. Dorothy wasn't enough of a character. So all it has is unanswered questions and giant robot action fight toy commercial.
>>283199969I gained an appreciation for OP once I figured out the visuals were in homage to Ultraseven's theme song. The clear goal in mind for pretty much all of Big O's openings is nostalgia for science fiction shows and television. Also, fuck the song that they were forced to replace the original opening with after 2007. That song simply fucking sucks and doesn't even fit.
>>283188903It didn't flop. It just didn't stay that much in your mind because you don't like it lmao

Big O has my favorite fictional romance of all time. When everybody asks me what a good fictional romance is, not a shitty one, I always point to Roger and Dorothy.
>>283201834Non mecha fags will never understand the genre and always try to write it off as a toy commercial because they lack the critical thinking skills to understand basic storytelling. Something which most shonen and isekai is terrible at doing.
>>283188903obligatory:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_7ecaTHa28This show as well as Gunslinger Girl made me Toshihiko Sahashi fan
>>283201844It feels like less of a romance and more of a friendship or father/daughter relationship. Like nothing really happens past season 2 that advances it aside from like the last few episodes where dorothy basically resurrects herself to save roger and roger is basically like "y-you too!" like he has been for most of the series.

>>283203101Fair enough. I'm just glad to be able to see it at all.

Just now dawned on me that Beck basically became this show's equivalent of Doronjo after his first appearance.
>>283192091Just showing clips to some old tokusatsu goes a long way.Ultraseven, which Big O's OP is clearly imitating:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCuz2D7br78And some MADs of Red Baron and its sequel Mach Baron, which are design influences. Mach Baron especially, with the heavy forearms.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0bHSvARr34https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0CoctI8XAo
>>283203393All Beck episodes are highlights, especially the afro episode
>>283203393>>283203567One fun thing about Beck is that every time he shows up, the nature of Roger and Dorothy's relationship changes. He's of course there in the first episode when they meet. In his second appearance, Roger and Dorothy change from being a purely transactional relationship to more of a father/daughter relationship. In his THIRD appearance, this shifts again, and the romance between them starts to grow.
I didn't dislike season 2 that much aside from Alan and everything else related to Union. Angel was fine and I enjoyed her receiving more screentime than in s1

I can mostly take or leave Alan Gabriel throughout Season 2.That said, he has an absolutely 10/10 death scene. One of my favorite villain demises ever.
Big O is in an awkward realm of the mecha genre where it's distinctly vintage. Like true Gigantor/Giant Robo style vintage but with absolutely zero appeal to kids. Mecha was big in the 90s and 2000s but what was popular was the complete opposite of that style.Aesthetically Big O is a top 10 anime. I'm sure the plot filtered a lot people to no surprise because it's more original and avant garde. Not uncommon for that era but still it will always hurt popularity.99 was also a big year. One Piece and HxH debuted at the same time and nothing was going to even come close to competing with those. Maybe if it had released at a slightly different time things would have been different...

>>283188982Fuck yeah Brain Powerd. My favorite non-Gundam Tomino anime after Ideon.
>>283261385100%, and it's one of the few that left me in tears.
Big O was one of those shows i kept running into at random public places, always continuously on reruns at 11pm. My strangest and fondest memory is waiting for my turn at a late night bowling alley, watching it on the one CRT with TV and the rest are displaying bowling scores
>>283262651Strangely enough, it felt the most like a detective focused episode when there are already a few that are. Maybe it also gets to flesh out side characters and we got to learn more about the lore.
>>283261385I always liked him
>>283264219>My strangest and fondest memory is waiting for my turn at a late night bowling alley, watching it on the one CRT with TV and the rest are displaying bowling scoresThat sounds really comfy.
>>283260263it was very goodthe buildup to dan's "false" memory eventually becoming real was executed really well
>>283264219When did they stop airing reruns? I could have sworn I was still catching them late at night around 2009.
>>283268445The absolute mind fuckery of him as a young man watching himself shoot Sybil as their older selves in a foreign movie was kino.
>>283269990actually truethe atmosphere was really good too
>>283270080The atmosphere's thick with noir and depression kino I tell ya. To be a pretentious prick for a moment, it fits into the theme of how helpless he and the military police are, but also how everyone else in Paradigm City is too. They're all stuck in their roles to the bitter end. So on and on the movie plays, and everyone's left wondering what could have been. Also, the military police uniforms are awesome.
>>283188903It actually fucking sucks. I've watched like 10,000 "animes".
>>283270497nothing pretentious about that, i think you described it perfectlythey couldn't have did it betteri also think the uniforms are sick btw
>>283258533nobody asked, zoom
>>283270677The episode is pretty much a decent example on how to do meta shit without it being obnoxious. Stack cool character stuff on top of that with seeing more of the inner workings of the military police, tragedy kino, and of course, Dastun. Bery gud.
>>283188903Too western, which is odd considering bebop was very western too and is wanked into oblivion these days. Guess mecha really is a big filter.
>>283269134that sounds about right then i think cowboy bebop reruns stopped too. that played just as much as Big O
>>283271197What's funny is toonami just tried doing a throwback block but it didn't do too hot and got cancelled.
>>283271519think they did something similar with regular cartoons of the late 90s/00s semi recently
>>283271848That ended up becoming boomerang which I think is still airing.
It sounds cool as fucking hell, but I still don't really get what CAST IN THE NAME OF GOD, YE NOT GUILTY means in the overall mythos of the series.Something about Tomato Farmers I guess.>>283217913Was surprised to find out that this little short series of comics was made by the Isekai Ojisan mangaka. Based Ojisan always has great taste.
>>283272880It literally just means whether you're worthy or not.
>>283272571I found the name, it was called Checkered Past>Checkered Past was a programming block on Adult Swim featuring classic Cartoon Network shows weekdays from the full hour of 6pm. It launched on August 28th, 2023 and ended on June 27, 2025.
>>283273050Worthy of what? Being a Tomato? What separates the good tomatoes from the bad ones?World's a fucking play. What's more important? Being entertaining, or being a good little actor tomato?Who is the fucking audience for this stage anyway.
>>283273053I wonder how much longer adult swim and toonami are going to last.
Was everyone a Tomato?Or just the "main actors"?
>>283273121Piloting the megadeus you tard, it's giant walking weapon of mass destruction with sentience. If anyone could hop in and pilot one paradigm would be fucked.
>>283273148Everyone is an "actor" the actors are the tomatoes.
>>283273196Look at how much fun he's having. He must be the happiest guy in the whole world.
>>283273384Wielding the power of god would be enough to make any man happy or just insane.
>>283273050Being tentacle raped by a Big erotic!!
>>283273626It's vore technically but I guess that works too.
>>283273148>>283273252Why were they tomatoes in the first place? I vaguely remember something about how they were being grown unnaturally or something. What I can manage to remember of discussing the whole thing a while ago is that every citizen in Paradigm is an artificial being trapped in a loop by the real Angel, a heart broken woman/angel/god/whatever that can't move on an copes by trying to replay events until she gets her happy ending. The Bigs are just tools to wipe the "stage" clean for a reset and after so many of them cracks have started to appear.Have the ending too cuz is comy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeJx8Zksff4
>>283273871Red herring for the grand stage that is paradigm city, everyone in it is an actor filling a specific role. Paradigm has been in a repetitive cycle of destroying and being reset by angel/venus, so much so that it's become a natural habit of its inhabitants or "actors". Much like how gordon rosewater stated that synthetic tomatoes have been manufactured so long and so many times that they begin to taste like the real thing. The actors are essentially those tomatoes, memories are implanted in the actors so they can use that as a basis for their "script" to fulfill their role. The problem is that this cycle has been going on so long that certain actors maintain memories from the previous cycle or "take" making them go off script and disrupt the entire play or show which eventually leads to the destruction of the stage and its reset.
>>283273871the tomato is a meta narrative metaphor for how a toy commercial can potentially become a "real" narrative
>>283205310Anyone around that grabbed this that's kind of heart enough to reupload it?
>>283273431>happy>insaneThere's less of a distinction between those two than you'd think.
>>283255389Men shouldn't have spiky fingers. Men should have rounded, or better, squared fingers.Women have spiky fingers.
>>283273050I’ll admit that I marked out when I saw “Ye Not” in the first fight with Big Fau
Gantz >>Brain Powered >>Big O imo
>>283280592The gantz movie was directed by the series supervisor of the big O.
>>283280592Rare Brain Powered mention.
Dorothy cute.
