You are watching the series mainly through the eyes of a perverted young man who is so self-absorbed that he doesn't even see strangers on the street and mainly interacts with apparitions that the rest of the world can't see. The director is saying that this is (You), his protagonist is an audience self-insert according to what he thinks of you and not how you wish to see yourself, and then he forces that protagonist to painfully grow into adulthood.
