>>283262509Much more in depth interview with Ohba and HaradaI still don't know the right interpretation for (苦笑) depending on the context.Bad TL 1/>First, please tell us about each of your respective past involvement with the Pretty Series and the Aikatsu! Series. First, Ohba-san please tell us about your involvement with Pretty Series.>Ohba: I was responsible for promoting the original Pretty Rhythm Miniskirt before the anime adaptation, and as part of a media mix strategy to spread awareness of this initiative, we collaborated with AKB48 and secured manga serialisations in Ribon magazine and later in Chao magazine. After that, I also became involved in launching the TV anime series, and ended up working extensively across the entire media mix projects. That was back when I was still based at the Takara Tomy headquarters. When the Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream anime began, I was transferred to Takara Tomy Arts along with the arcade division, and from then on I became involved in the series up to Waccha Primagi!. >Initially, it was question of how to promote Pretty Rhythm, which Takara Tomy Arts and Syn Sophia had set out to create? So that's the kind of work you were involved in?
>>283264685>Bad TL 2/>Ohba: That's right. The promotional concept centred on the question: "how could this be integrated into girls' lifestyles?" Before Pretty Rhythm, there were works like Oshare Majo Love and Berry and Wantame Music Channel, weren't there? Around the time Love Berry ended, a real-life fashion boom hit primary school girls. Then, the girls disappeared from the toy sections of stores, didn't they? "How can we get girls to return to the toy section?" That was the question posed by my boss at the time and so we decided to challenge ourselves by creating an amusement cabinet aimed at girls with the theme of "turning the sales floor into a theater", that's was how Pretty Rhythm came into being. Takara Tomy, being originally a toy company, conceived of the Prism Stones from the idea that "wouldn't it be wonderful if the clothes emerged from sparkling jewels!" The idea was to incorporate clothing that reflects current trends that remained close to actual real-world clothes, thus "transforming fashion into a toy hobby" and encouraging its integration into girls' everyday lifestyles.>In terms of promoting the all encompassing media mix, did your role remain unchanged in the following series PriPara?>Ohba: Yes. However, when it comes to coordinating and synchronising across media mixes, we also had to consider "when featuring it in the anime how should we approach integrating it into the game's content itself?" so this meant we ended up getting involved in the game development too. I'd been asking developers from Synsophia to handle more tasks and do more things, so I realise I've placed quite a burden on them. Furthermore, maintaining close connections with Tatsunoko Production's animation production site to establish a consistent core across the entire media mix became the most important task.>Thank you. Now, please tell us about 'Aikatsu!' and yourself Harada-san.
>>283264718Bad TL 3/>Harada: The first series I was responsible for was the original Aikatsu!. I hadn't been involved with the franchise for a while since Aikatsu Stars!, but with the aim of launching a new Aikatsu! series, I've been involved since last year in producing Aikatsu Academy! and alongside that in the branding for the entire series. Originally, I was in the video game division at Bandai before its merger with Namco, and even earlier than that, I was involved with the WonderSwan and its compatible software. Separately, there was a Card Business Division, which was the department responsible for selling Carddas through vending machines nationwide. At that time, the Carddas business was selling each card for around 20 to 25 yen, wasn't it? Around this time, it was noted that "Sega had successfully implemented a model selling each card for 100 yen".>I see (laughs). When calculated by the number of cards sold like that, you could say the same about titles like Love Berry and Mushiking: King of Beetles.>Harada: Well, they were a smash hit, werent't they? It was decided that the Card Business Division would take on the challenge in this market. The card business inherently involves selling large volumes of goods at low profit margins, making it a constant battle against manufacturing costs, so when it came to launching Aikatsu!, we didn't initially consider selling physical 3D items like "jewels" – something akin to what Takara Tomy did – from the begininng. The Card Division lacked expertise in game development, so some staff members, including myself, were transferred from the video game division during the Bandai era to then work on various titles for the Data Carddass cabinets. Right after Pretty Rhythm went live, the whole team went to see it using the company car (laughs). "That part of the cabinet spins!?" they'd say to each other.
>>283264748Bad TL 4/>Ohba: When you turn it, the character rotates around, but it didn't really serve any purpose as a game feature, and it was a real pain to clean... (sarcastic smile). By the way, what exactly was the first Data Carddass machine? >Harada: The first generation consisted of Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Digimon, which were created before my transfer. Immediately after their lauch, some of the machines yielded results, but maintaining income from them proved difficult, and so we focused on establishing a "play cycle" through a persistent process of trial and error. By having customers insert money, receive a card, and then use it, they develop a greater attachment to the card. And next time, bring that card along when they come to play again and combine it with newly acquired cards makes it even more enjoyable. To ensure long-term enjoyment, it is essential to establish such a reliable play cycle. Furthermore, to ensure you enjoy this cycle, we avoid creating cards that feel like they're "overpowered". When there is an overpowered element, this cycle tends not to function well. I believe this applies to trading card games as well.>If there's something along the lines of "I'll be done once I get my hands on this card!", does that mean it becomes difficult to develop beyond that point?
>>283264771Bad TL 5/>Harada: That's right. If it becomes a case of "popular characters = the strongest", then the potential for the cards as a whole is effectively stifled, aren't they? As for titles aimed at girls, we released arcade games such as Precure and Tamagotchi, however to truly showcase the core enjoyment inherent in the Data Carddass cabinet with the repeating the cycle mentioned earlier, we needed to create original characters within a worldview designed specifically for the cabinet's characteristics and that's how Aikatsu! began. This is succinctly encapsulated in the catchphrase "for idols, cards are their life." At the time, broadcasting television commercials on arcade cabinets was virtually unheard of within the industry. How can we get people interested in visiting our shops and encourage them to play? That was the fundamental approach I believe, but for Bandai, which sells toys and cards, it was standard practice to place TV commercials within the TV programs for it, so we also aired TV commercials for Data Carddass during Aikatsu!. As a result, customers who wouldn't normally visit the shops started dropping by, which delighted the sales staff too. Of course, we were also mindful that Pretty Rhythm had achieved success with that approach too. That meant the Data Carddass cabinet would be placed next to Pretty Rhythm, I suppose (laugh). Who would have thought that would lead to the lyrics for the new ending theme in this film?>As the lyrics of the new song Pretty × Activity say, "we were so close we could hear each other laugh" (laugh). Ohba-san, how did you feel when the Aikatsu! cabinet arrived next to the Pretty Rhythm cabinet?
>>283264801Bad TL 6/>Ohba: But that meant the market had grown since other manufacturers were entering the fray, hasn't it? It's certainly expanded compared to when Pretty Rhythm was fighting a lonely battle. From the store's perspective, we felt that it was the first time we had been recognised as a viable market. Rather than thinking, "The Love Berry boom is over yet one company is trying to do something different" it meant they understood, "Ah so this kind of market exists." >Harada: Both were using media mix to draw customers into their shops from outside, you see. One of the great things about arcade cabinets is that you can see the customers queuing up. >Ohba: Absolutely.>Harada: When you see people queuing at both games you might think "I wonder if I should try that one too." With home video games and smartphone apps, you can't see that kind of situation, you see. >Ohba: No matter how hard we worked on promotions, the most common response when we asked in surveys "Where did you hear about us?" was "I saw it in the store".>Whilst anime and commercials drew people in from outside, the biggest factor was the bustling scene in the toy department, where you could think "that game everyone's playing looks fun!"
>>283264833Bad TL 7/>Harada: Thanks to people like you, many other people were able to enjoy it. I think the reason Aikatsu! was so popular was because of the "MyChara" feature. The original Aikatsu! proposal did not include a MyChara feature, but since IC cards became standard across this series' cabinets, we quickly incorporated it. I distinctly recall having that meeting on itat a café in Pacifico Yokohama on the way back from the Chao Festival, exactly one year before Aikatsu! launched. Given that the target audience is primary school girls, the theme is "self-production" emphasising the MyChara feature as a means for them to fully immerse themselves in the role of the protagonist, rather than "producing an idol as a producer". You might start because you're inspired by the anime's Ichigo-chan, or even if you haven't watched the anime, you can enjoy it purely as a game where you "become an idol" as long as you have your own character. "Becoming Ichigo and singing and dancing!" probably wouldn't have created much scope for expansion, so I suppose the appeal lay in being able to fully immerse oneself as one of the idols in that world.
>>283264857Bad TL 8/>Ohba: When Aikatsu! began in 2012, Pretty Rhythm' was running Dear My Future, which was followed by Rainbow Live, and the afterwards PriPara would shift its focus to featuring customisable character play as its main feature. Pretty Rhythm also featured something called a Memory Pass, where you could change the character's hairstyle, but the base character was still the anime character. To promote that they even changed hairstyles within the anime itself, but when it came to expanding the concept to MyChara, Aikatsu! had already taken it a step further. While observing the popularity of the MyChara feature in Aikatsu!, I realised that by transitioning to a printing cabinet format, we could further deepen the concept of MyChara through its effective utilisation, and that led to the creation of PriPara. Roll paper has a fixed size specification, and when we discussed it "the width is the standard card size, but the height would have to be longer, wouldn't it?" we realized that perforations could be added to the top section. Then the idea came up: "Let's swap those as if they're our personal character's business cards." The fact that exchanging online profiles was popular at the time also added to the idea.>The idea of "snapping Tomotickets", which symbolises PriPara, was born from a backwards thinking in response to the constraints of roll paper.>Ohba: "What shall we do about this part?" "Well then, it's a business card." In directions where Pretty Rhythm couldn't quite go, Aikatsu! took the initiative, and we've been developing concepts like that ever since, like a dogfight where you're constantly trying to outmanoeuvre each other from behind. >Harada: Takara Tomy Arts had switched to on-demand printing units, so we were doing the same with Aikatsu Stars!, it's on-demand from now on!
>>283264883Bad TL 9/>Ohba: "The world is truly in the era of printing cabinets! From now on, it's all about roll paper!" All our rolls of paper have the same design on the back side, but I was impressed that Bandai has different designs on the bakc depending on the IP.>Harada: I believe the reverse-side designs were divided into titles for boys and titles for girls. Still, that "Pakiru" in PriPara was an absolute stroke of genius. Roll paper allows for printing one-off, unique designs, and in terms of output that makes the most of that potential, I felt that idea represented, in a sense, the pinnacle of what the printing mechanism could achieve.>Ohba: That too, I suppose, is the result of seeking gimmicks as a toy producer. When printing the Pritickets, a final coating is applied, the degree of gloss achieved depends on the heat applied during this process, so we considered various approaches such as adding a watermark-like mark or altering the cut size of the paper to produce larger tickets. That's more of a bromide card than an actual playing card. The PriPara cabinet had a camera, and so your photo was printed onto a PriTicket but initially, it also had a mode similar to the "Purikura" machine (TL note: photobooth cabinets). >Harada: That was being rather greedy, wasn't it? (laughs).
>>283264915Bad TL 10/ >Ohba: I was being greedy, wasn't I? The name PriPara itself incorporates the same sounds of "purikura" while also embodying the meaning of "printing". The original tagline going to be "anyone can make their debut with the snap of the camera!" after all. At the time, children posed for the camera and took pictures with their families who had come along, and I think it became an experience unique to PriPara for the children, forming part of their identity, they could only have at PriPara. During the PriPara era, we were permitted to place a "Tomoticket Exchange Board" in arcades, which fostered interaction among the children. I think it created a feel like one of those old-fashioned sweet shops of the past, where a community had formed. >Harada: It's where the local kids tend to gather, you see.>It had become a place where children from other classes or year groups who didn't speak at school, or students from neighbouring schools whose daily lives overlapped, could gather.>Harada: Since there'd be events like tournaments, you might have encounters where you think, "I always seem to see that girl around.">Ohba: PriPara is centered on the theme of "friendship", just as Laala and her friends gain companions throughout the anime, players at the arcade cabinets could also forge friendships similarly, and I believe we've managed to create something where they'd both be heading in the same direction. The theme of Aikatsu! was "self-produce your way to becoming a top idol", and just as intended, customers were engrossed in playing with their own characters, however "aligning mind with action" was also something PriPara placed great importance on.
>>283264939Bad TL 11/>Harada: You can really sense the desire to fully immerse yourself in girls' culture from Ohba and their team's project, can't you? At the time, with Aikatsu!, we weren't particularly conscious of "because PriPara does it this way..." or rather, we didn't have the time to consider that as we were so focuesd on our trial and error ways to realise the worldview we aimed for and what we believed to be the best possible service (play experience). >Ohba: You mentioned that before, didn't you? Aikatsu! is based on Takarazuka, you see (TL note: I'm assuming this refers to the all female theater production Takarazuka Revue). Therefore, PriPara is like an amusement park.>Oh my!>Harada: What cemented this decision from the functional perspective of the unit itself was the fact that Aikatsu! was equipped with a telemetry system for data collection. Each cabinet was fitted with a communication unit enabling the aggregation of daily rankings and such, allowing that sports-spirit mentality of "working hard everyday to become the top idol" to be recreated directly as gameplay. The original proposal even featured a rival academy called "Million Seller Academy", flush with money, as a rival to "Starlight Academy" so it was that much of a sports-themed setting. >That direction also influenced the anime's setting, with the "Aikatsu! Ranking" becoming one of the story's central ideas. While PriPara also had a premise about "aiming to become a kami idol", its system wasn't quite as focused on competition, was it?>Ohba: If anything, it's purely an element to measure growth. We have incorporated this feature not so much as a ranking system, but rather as a level system designed to encourage repeated play. >The difference in their respective backgrounds is clearly evident: PriPara was developed with a hobby toy's focus on gimmicks, while Aikatsu! carries the distinct philosophy of video and trading card games.
>>283264967Bad TL 12/>Ohba: Now that I think about it, that might well be true.>I hear the two of you were such good friends that you'd go out for drinks together even back when the Aikatsu! and Pretty Rhythm cabinets were operating side by side?>Ohba: That's because both Aikatsu! and Pretty Series would be announcing new information at Ciao Festival, so we'd have a meal together beforehand to sort of lay all our cards on the table.>Harada: "This is what we're going to do next" we'd say.>Ohba: Of course, we didn't speak about things we couldn't speak about. But we didn't lie either. >If the Ciao Festival is the reason, would the frequency be about once a year?>Ohba: Other occasions were at toy shows and gatherings hosted by publishers. "Let's sneak out of this party together" or something like that (laugh). That's a joke, of course.>(laughs) Was it also at one of those events that you first met?>Harada: I don't really remember that part.>Ohba: But since we both go out to scout each others' works, you'd have a feeling of "that person's always there", ddin't you?>Harada: There is this thing called a location test, you see. The person in charge always stands suspiciously at the back in a Vega pose, arms crossed and standing like a statue (TL note: guessing it's a Street Fighter reference). >Ohba: We'd both pretend to be parents of children participating in the location test, but people in the same industry would see right through it.
>>283264989Bad TL 13/>So you gradually began to exchange words in such places?>Ohba: Back when Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live first aired, Prism Stone Harajuku opened and on opening day Harada-san came and presented us with wine, didn't you? I thought he was quite the gentlemen for doing something so classy.>Harada: It was a housewarming gift to celebrate the opening of the store. After that, we started inviting each other over whenever we had live performances, didn't we?>Ohba: I was invited by Avex to attend the "Aikatsu! LIVEIllusion" event held at the Tokyo International Forum. We too started inviting people to our live shows, thinking, "We're not going to lose!" "Aikatsu! Music Awards: Let's All Win an Award SHOW!" and "Pop Up! PriPara: Aim for the Idol Grand Prix Together!" happened to be released as 3D-compatible theatrical films around the same time, and many other such coincidental synchronisation of our projects occurred quite often.>Harada: Since Ohba and I are close in age, our formative experiences are similar, and that may well have led to our ideas overlapping in certain areas. >Ohba: "You can do 3D without wearing those red-and-blue cellophane glasses now!" sort of thing (laughs). >Harada: But still, you want the children to have new experiences, don't you?>Ohba: Aikatsu! also ran collaboration projects with apps, didn't it?>Harada: With Aikatsu! Music Awards, we said, "You're allowed to use your smartphones in the cinema!" This time, it's being broadcast on TOKYO MX alongside "PriPara: Everyone's Dream Let's GoPriPara" (already aired on 12th October), but as it's designed to be enjoyed using feature of the smartphone app, it's a bit sad that this app can't be used anymore, isn't it? (sarcastic smile).
>>283265023Bad TL 14/>Were there any other memorable exchanges during your dinner together?>Ohba: No, I think the only other thing we'd basically talk about was Gundam. >Harada: Ohba, you're a huge fan of Gundam, aren't you? It wasn't as though we would talk about nothing but Aikatsu! and the Pretty Series all the time (smiles). After all, I listened to whatever fantasties Ohba conjured up in his mind.>Ohba: Then the rest was a matter of our hobbies. I recall Harada once mentioning he was having trouble storing his board game collection.>As for collaborations between Aikatsu! and Pretty Series, prior to Aikatsu! × PriPara THE MOVIE, there was the 2022 Dream Collaboration Festival.>Ohba: We'd actually been saying quite often, in a rather professional sort of way, that it would be nice to work together someday. In the middle of all this, we were able to hold the DreColla Fes. sponsored by DNP (Dai Nippon Printing). I'd heard that DreColla Fes. was initially only planned as a real life exhibition, but I thought, since it's a special occassion and we're doing it anyway, we might as well do a bit more, right? So I approached Virtual Avex, who I'd previously heard wanted to do a virtual live event for the Pretty Series, and put them in touch with DNP. Therefore, since we were creating a virtual live event anyway, we then connected with Aeon Entertainment and arranged for an edited version of the virtual live event to be screened in cinemas.>Thanks to Ohba's connections, the project kept expanding...>Ohba: Well, yes, it's completely different from the proposal. Of course, I do think that the realisation of DreColla Fes has lowered one hurdle between us working together.>Harada: This time it's a film (anime) work, you see.
>>283265054Bad TL 15/>Ohba: The offer for Aikatsu! × PriPara THE MOVIE came to Harada and myself from Bandai Namco Pictures and Tatsunoko Production, but I suspect it was more along the lines of "well, what the hell, even if it doesn't work out let's just ask and see?" (laughs). Well, I thought it might be difficult even if I alone approved it, but before I knew it, the decision to go public with it had been made.>Perhaps it was because so many staff members had been eagerly awaiting a project like this one and had worked hard to make it happen. Having passed through an era where cabinets stood side by side, Aikatsu! has now ceased operation of its arcade cabinets and is focusing on developments such as Aikatsu Academy! (Demikatsu), primarily on YouTube. Meanwhile, the latest instalment in the Pretty Series, Himitsu no Aipuri, features Ozora Akari from Aikatsu! on its cabinet to coincide with the collaboration film. While the circumstances surrounding both projects have changed significantly, how do you two perceive this current situation?>Ohba: My involvement only extended to Waccha! Primagi, but my commitment to "keeping the series going" remains unchanged. However, I believe that revitalising the market following the pandemic was a major challenge for those on the ground.>When it comes to the post-pandemic era, I feel there are parallels with the expansion of the Idol Land PriPara app.
>>283265080Bad TL 16/>Ohba: The planning for Idol Land PriPara began immediately after Idol Time PriPara concluded, so the project's start was entirely unrelated to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the cabinets cease operation, they vanish from the world. How, then, can we preserve the archives of it we've built up? It's a project that emerged during our thoughts on that. If we're launching a new app, we should bundle the anime too and if we want players to approach it with the same mindset as when they played PriPara in the past, this is the way to go. It wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to see the anime's storyline as reflecting the pandemic situation, but that is purely coincidental. In that sense, I feel that Aikatsu Academy! also represents a development that brings new value to the IP built up over time.>Harada: Originally, Aikatsu! began as a product-driven project with the idea of "let's create a business where we can sell cards for 100 yen each", however as we continued, the direction of the work itself solidified, and we gained a large number of fans who support it in other ways. In this instance, how can we pivot the business to move beyond a narrow focus on card cabinet operations to allow customers to appreciate the appeal of the IP itself? How can we establish a new cycle to deliver Aikatsu! to people around the world? Naturally, as a manufacturer, our core business involves selling merchandise and providing services, but might we not present what we've cultivated thus far to the world in new ways? It was within this context that the current Aikatsu Academy! was born. This is our challenge to create a new Aikatsu! series, made possible because of the current era, which can be enjoyed by people overseas without restrictions on location or time.
>>283265103Bad TL 17/>Do you sense any sort of interaction arising from the launch of Aikatsu Academy! now that those who loved Aikatsu! and PriPara as children have reached an age where they can look back on those days fondly?>Harada: Indeed, some fans are still enjoying it, thinking, "Ah yes, this is also Aikatsu!" annd so on. Much like the concept of using a smartphone app during a film, we always want people to feel that "new experience", so it's heartening to hear feedback like, "this was my first time encountering this format of content through Aikatsu Academy!", and to know that people recognise it as a new form of entertainment that builds upon what the Aikatsu! IP has cultivated.>Ohba: What remains in the end when something that began as a toy in the broadest sense and its promotional animation has largely fulfilled its purpose is the orginal concept, isn't it? With this in mind, what direction should we aim for next? There's something Harada said that has stayed with me. When the series had been running for several years, you mentioned that the team held a meeting with the theme of "properly philosophising Aikatsu!". Like "is this really Aikatsu!?">Harada: Probably around the time Aikatsu Stars! began, now that I think. As the conclusion of the original Aikatsu! came into view and I found myself distancing myself from the series, and I felt it was something we ought to discuss moving forward to continue the series. What should we preserve, and what should we change?
>>283265132Bad TL 18/ >Ohba: When a business loses the foundation it had when it started, and the underlying philosophy hasn't been properly solidified, the intellectual property itself can become extinct, as we've seen this happen time and again. When the physical form is gone, what is the philosophical essence that defines that IP? With PriPara, it's all about "Everyone's friends! Everyone's idols!", isn't it? With PriChan, then it's "You won't know until you try, and if you don't know, then try it!" If something embodies that, then it's PriChan. When the physical form and animation disappear and only the title remains, in order for viewers to think "this is still Aikatsu! isn't it?" or "this is still part of Pretty Series isn't it?", we must properly consider that underlying philosophy. So that's what Aikatsu Academy! is all about. When we did the virtual musical for PriChan, I thought we'd achieved that to some extent, but with Aikatsu Academy!, I felt they had gone even further!>"Is this really Aikatsu!?" is a question that frequently comes up among fans. I believe it is precisely because of this ambiguity that the words themselves give rise to differnt answers within each fan's heart, that said if the creators themselves become inconsistent, any new developments risk becoming something the fans do not desire. >Ohba: If we don't properly consider what the essence of that IP actually means, it risks becoming reduced to basic symbols and illustrations. It becomes a parody.
>>283265168Bad TL 19/>Harada: Even when it comes to official releases, without that level of commitment it risks becoming derivative work, therefore, I believe it is crucial to maintain a firm grasp on the core concept. That said, I believe the widespread use of "yes, yes, that's also Aikatsu!" stems not merely from its practicality but because it embodies the core principle of the series, that Aikatsu! does not dismiss others who try to do their best. I suppose it's perfectly acceptable to interpret it as "If someone is working hard because they believe it to be Aikatsu!, then it is Aikatsu!" The scriptwriter crafted some truly wonderful lines, didn't they?>Ohba: As a result, when I heard Harada say "we're philosophising about Aikatsu!", I panicked thinking "we really ought to be considering that sort of thing too" though I didn't let it show on my face (laughs). >Harada: I suppose the approach might differ slightly for series like Aikatsu!, which have mostly kept the same title throughout, and those that undergo a brand refresh like Pretty Series. >While elements may evolve with each new title, PriPara, PriChan, and PriMagi, but what truly stands out is the consistent philosophy declared in the 10th Anniversary Special "Pretty Series pledges to continue supporting girls' dreams for the next decade.">Ohba: Our goal of supporting children who wish to shine brightly through song, dance, and fashion remains unchanged, but the way we support them evolves. That means the way we play will also change, doesn't it? >Harada: With Aikatsu Academy!, I was also indebted to Ohba... and the fact that I was able to receive comments from Laala was only possible because of all that accumulated experience.
>>283265198 Bad TL 20/>Ohba: This collaboration was only possible because of Virtual Avex's archive. That Laala model is a further refinement of the one used for the DreColla Fes. event, which was originally adjusted based on data from Syn Sophia's game during the PriPara virtual live performance. Precisely because various archives remain, the hurdle from "I'd like to do that" has been lowered to "let's do it", enabling us to take actions like this. It really comes in handy at times like this, so it's always best to be prepared for anything, isn't it? It all depends on whether I remember what I did (laughs).>Both Aikatsu! and PriPara are now enjoying renewed popularity among women who were once girls engrossed in them as children, what are your thoughts on this phenomenon? >Ohba: There are those who have liked them for a long time and kept following them, but I think more people stopped following them around the time they turned ten. >Harada: It was originally designed that way, you see.>Ohba: However, those few years when you were utterly absorbed in something still make up a significant portion of your childhood, don't they? The Great PriPara Exhibition made me realize that these memories remain unforgettable even after graduation, as high school and university students came to see it with friends, saying things like, "this was our childhood, wasn't it?" Couples would came along and have the girlfriend pointing at every exhibit and explaining it all to her boyfriend. >That's absolutely lovely, isn't it?
>>283265220Bad TL 21/>Harada: I often say this, but when we all gathered in my home town after the coming-of-age ceremony, I'd be far happier if we'd become the sort of people who could say, "why on earth were we so obsessed with that back then?" Many people who were children at the time have come to see this film, and I hope they enjoy it with the same feelings they had back then. Everyone, I imagine you've all been through a great deal over the past decade, I do hope that watching this film will make the ten years each of you have lived shine even brighter. >Ohba: It would be lovely to have an experience like that, wouldn't it? Like bumping into someone you used to play with back then at the theatre. "That might be the kid who used to play on the Aikatsu! machine next to me back then!" (laughs). >Finally, what do you think the relationship between Aikatsu! and Pretty Series will be like going forward?>Ohba: I suppose we've moved beyond the question of "what we should do" and entered a world where it's "what the fans want us to do".>Harada: First off, I suppose it's a case of '"please watch this film, won't you?" (laughs).>Ohba: I suppose it really does ultimately come down to the outcome of this film, doesn't it?>Harada: Entertainment thrives because of that sense of shared unity among the audience. It depends on how you all feel about it.>Ohba: It depends on whether you'd like to or not, doesn't it? Whether you enjoy it as a once-in-a-decade fireworks display, or whether you feel this kind of enjoyment could be had repeatedly.>Thank you very much! That concludes our questions.
>>283265240Bad TL 22/END>Harada: On Saturday, November 1st, there will be a screening with a stage greeting featuring myself, Ohba, and the entire production team (*tickets are sold out). I should like to make a brief appeal, if I may.>Ohba: After the splendid cast's stage greetings, it's our turn next, so it's rather nerve-wracking, you know (sarcastic smile). There are things I can't discuss in this article that remains online, so the raw, unvarnished stories will be saved for the stage greetings, I suppose.>As with real-time comments, you might just shout out things you wouldn't say elsewhere, you know (laugh).>Ohba: They'll say "in the interviews, they only made polite formal remarks, but in truth those two must be on bad terms." You might want to include this in the afterword. >Harada: "They might actually be the same person" or something like that (laugh). >For those who wish to know the truth, do come along to the stage greeting!
>>283265264Thanks for the TL, that was a hefty interview. There's so much to dissect in this one, but my personal favorite is:>Harada: Right after Pretty Rhythm went live, the whole team went to see it using the company car (laughs)The mental image of a bunch of Bamco salarymen packing into a single car to go play a little girl arcade machine is just too hilarious.

>>283265132>>283265168maybe im reading this with a negative mindset but this is a kinda sad section. they can frame aikatsu academy as being a successor to the franchise but like it just straight up isn’t anywhere close to being one. given how the series went after ogkatsu it seems to me like they completely failed at the type of introspection they talk about here. idk maybe im just bitter or something
>>283265698Of course it's cute, Multi-sama is there!Should I go back to watching it? I stopped a few episodes after the boob monster samurai girl showed up

>>283265806Well, I think it's more like they're solely talking about how it's important when managing a franchise to be able to articulate the "core" of your franchise, rather than talking about the success (or lack thereof) of later projects. It makes sense that, going into Stars, a discussion about what parts of the franchise are essential and what can be changed would come up, since Stars was quite the tonal departure.
>>283266073>11 year old girl and X's younger sisterAlright, you might have convinced me...
>>283265806I think Ohba-P's comparison to High School Prichan was on point, it's new content for the series without the use of arcade + anime that remains consistent with the original identity of the franchise that people like.

spooky retard
>>283285959A very canon outfit for the depressed retardnui.
It's gotta be a bit weird talking to HimaMitsu in a conversation as a third party. Mii just stares unflinchingly at Himari, even when they're addressing you...
>>283286079Himari has no friends because Mii always makes them feel like a third wheel.
>>283286105I will never get over Mii getting jealous over Himari eating lunch with Yuko of all people.

>>283286303she'll go after hinata nextand hinata will think she just wants to play soccer or something
The mere idea of not eating lunch is enough to horrify Himari.>>283286384She'd probably have some really cool Chinese fiery martial art soccer kicks, so maybe she'd be a good candidate for the next Inazuma Eleven episode. Falls for the retard oniichan only to discover her latent potential as a soccer star, featuring Nagisa netorilu round 2.

>>283287113they don't use honorifics despite ichika being an unfaithful slut, but himamitsu still do...
Mii can make even a heartwarming moment seem a little bit menacing.Very kawaii episode. The deliberate comparisons of other (s)idle relationships to Himari and Mii's relationship continue to abound, which is cool to see remain a focus as we enter the latter half of the season. Ichika's shallow mimicry of someone else's dream is a cute way to call back to Mii's heavy "Himari-chan's dream is my dream!" from the first season that has been challenged this season, but it's an interesting twist that Ichika's resolution is to remain with her good friend as opposed to Mii's being to leave. All in all, fun episode, the sidle episodes continue to be really good.
>>283287711Mii's end of episode diary is so heavy you guys.
