Griffith wants to save the world and build a paradise, but the only path to achieve it involves incredible evil. So he's willing, heroically, to become a monster if it means saving the world. He has to create a means to destroy himself and the other devils though, obviously, or no matter what his intentions are it'll become corrupted, thus, Casca. It makes Guts into a weapon that will inevitably carve through all the other devils on the way to him. So the world becomes a paradise free of devils in the end, but only because of Griffith willing to take the dark path, all alone, probably with only Guts ever understanding what he's doing at the very last moment.
