So what exactly counts as "doing something" for side characters? This complaint gets thrown at so many different series that "they don't do anything" starts to feel like code for "they don't do what I want"
>>283237992every shounenshit character
>>283237992having sex
>>283237992Nothing is ever enough for side characterfags
>>283237992Look at Monogatari. They use side characters as plot points for each arc. Something like that, rather than "character who shows up every now and then and does something cool maybe then fucks off
>>283238104It's cast is significantly smaller than a battle shonen.
>>283237992>it doesn't tick a box therefore character bad
having a character arc and a bomb ass fight is plenty. maybe romance?
>>283238273If the story could reach the same end point without the character, they shouldn't be in it
>>283237992Chad is a good example of a side character that doesnt do shitis always there in the center stage just beside ichigo, part of the MC close friend group, was part of the main cast from the start of the story, has a cool power that is suppoust to be strong. But he never does anything, he just follow ichigo along, get his ass kicked every arc and thats it
Side character complaints almost always come down to a character being very important and then just disappearing from the story. Alternatively, a character being written like they're important (ie. part of someone's backstory, or stated to be powerful) but not doing anything.MHA: I have never in my life heard some ask for more Koda or Ojiro or Sato. They're side characters, everybody knows it, it's fine. But it is weird when Tenya gets an entire arc about revenge and bonding with Deku and Shoto, then disappears. Or Kirishima in the Overhaul arc. Or Momo's arc in the final exams. Or Uraraka getting set up as part of the Deku/Uraraka/Tenya trio from the start of the story through the sports festival.
